The Late William B. MacDonald

The passing of William B. MacDonald, an aged farmer of Wolfe Island, and one of the real pioneers of that vicinity, has been the cause of general regret among the residents of the island, who were warm friends of the deceased. The late Mr. MacDonald, though quiet and retiring in disposition was widely know as a "good neighbor", which is about the best tribute any man may be given at his death. Born on Howe Island eighty-five years ago, he had lived most of his life on Wolfe Island. His father was of staunch Scottish Highland stock, and migrated to this country many years ago. The funeral will be held on Thursday morning to the Church of the Sacred Heart, under the direction of the James Reid firm. Internment taking place at Wolfe Island. Surviving are his widow and two sons.

Wolfe Island Man Sought by Searchers
A widespread search for a Wolfe Island farmer, last seen yesterday wading in water to his waist, was being continued today by Island residents. The missing man is Donald MacDonald(sic), 27 year-old tenant farmer on the Hough-owned farm near Irvine Creek, 14 miles down river from the village of Marysville. Friends and neighbors of the man apparently believe he may have slippe din teh water and drowned. The search is being made by water and on land. He has a wife and two young children, it was reported. His wife could not be reached by telephone for comment on the mystery. "I saw the man wading in the water," Pat Doyle, a neighbor, told the Whig Standard. "I had been driving my truck across the bay from him, but I lost sight of him, because of the trees. I though nothing of it until I found his team tied up some time later, and sign of him." Mr. Doyle said. "His dog, who usually is at his master's heels, was waiting nearby, and that seemed odd. Anyway, I found his wife hadn't heard anything, so I got some of the neighbors hunting."

D. MacDonald, 31, Found Drowned off Wolfe Island - Missing Thirty Hourse. Sought by Sixty Men
"WOLFE ISLAND - Missing since Wednesday morning, the body of island resident Donald MacDonald, 31, was found yesterday afternoon about 200 yards off the northern end of the island. It was recovered with grappling hooks by two of a party of 60 residents who had searched for the man all day. MacDonald was last seen at about 10 am Wednesday by Wolfe Island farmer Pat Doyle, who said that as he was driving along the north shore he looked across a small inlet and saw him wading in the water off the far shore. A short time later, Mr. Doyle found the MacDonald team of horses tied up to a tree, but saw no sign of the owner. The body was found yesterday afternoon lying face up in about 20 feet of water in Goose Bay, an inlet, by island residents Everett Woodman and Jack Holliday. The time was about 3 o'clock. Wife of the drowned man, Mrs. MacDonald said that she had been in Kingston Wednesday afternoon, and on returning at about 6 pm became alarmed when she was unable to locate her husband. She learned from a neighbour, Charles Murphy that he had last seen Mr. MacDonald in the forenoon, with his team of horses, traveling toward the north end of the island. A search was started immediately, carried on for several hours and resumed Thursday. When found, one boot was missing from the body but a tam remained on the owner's head. Coroner P. M. Macdonnell has reported death by "accidental drowning". Surviving Mr. MacDonald are his wife, the former Ethel Farren of Kingston, and two sons, Dale, 4, and Derek, 19 months; his mother, Mrs. Catherine MacDonald, the former Catherine Driscoll of Howe Island; two brothers, John and Hank of Wolfe Island; three sisters, Mrs. Bill Norman (Rita), Kingston; Mrs. John Devlin (Flora), Wolfe Island; Sister Angela of the Eucharist Sisters of Precious Blood (Iona), Toronto; Mrs. Thomas King (Alzina) of Petawawa; and Mrs. Carl Gustafson (Anne) of Rensselaer, NY."

WOLFE ISLAND

Family and friends are mourning the loss of one of Wolfe Islands best-loved citizens - Noble Joseph Staley.
Mr. Staley, who died at Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday at the age of 71, was buried today.
Considered the patriarch of one of the islands oldest families, Mr. Staley had been a colorful cattle and horse drover and dairy farmer, said Mildred Hawkins-Walton, a former Wolfe Island Township councillor and a long-time friend and next-door neighbour.
Hes part of the history of Wolfe Island, she said.
He was the type of man who was a true believer in helping his neighbour. He had a very sharing type of philosophy. Hed give you the shirt off his back.
Mr. Staley also was considered a very fair and honest cattle and horse drover, she said.
My father (the late Edward Hawkins) always said that he was the best drover that ever came into his barnyard. He was the fairest.
Donated land
One example of Mr. Staleys generosity, she said, was a donation of close to four acres of land that he and his wife, Florine, made to the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Roman Catholic Separate School Board upon which to build Sacred Heart School.
Tim OShea, long-time reeve of Wolfe Island Township, said Mr. Staley was a tough guy but well-liked.
I never saw him angry, he said. He was a really good-natured fellow. Reeve OShea also remembers Mr. Staley for his generous spirit.
Hed move a building and hed do anything you wanted him to do, he said. And he did move some buildings, including many in the islands village when the main highway was widened.
But Mr. Staley never expected anything in return for his kindness, Reeve OShea said.
When I was first elected reeve in 58, he coached me and said, You think that Im going to ask you for a favour. But Im never going to ask. And he never did.
Family man
Mr. Staley was a big family man, Ms. Hawkins-Walton said, raising 17 children with his wife. One of the children, Patricia, who died of cancer, had been a Miss Wolfe Island.
Originally from Ireland, the Staley family goes back five generations, having ancestors among the first settlers of Wolfe Island, Ms Hawkins-Walton said.
The familys name can be found on such Wolfe Island locations as Staleys Bay and Staleys Point.
At one time, she said, Mr. Staley owned as many as 27 farms on the island. He sold some of his farms to Union Carbide in the 1950s to let them set up a plant on the land, which is now slated to be developed as a tourism and recreation centre by Matthews Group Ltd.
For a number of years, Mr. Staley delivered the mail between the island and Kingston, sometimes having to cross the treacherous ice during the winter, Ms. Hawkins-Walton said.
He risked his life many times bringing doctors to sick people on Wolfe Island, she said. He was often the first person to cross the ice with a horse and sleigh and a pipe pole.
One of his greatest accomplishments, she said, was helping to clean up the piles of old cars strewn over the island in the late 1970s. It was quite a bit for Noble to support a woman on council, she said. But he told me he would vote for me if I would clean up all the old cars of Wolfe Island that were polluting the island - and he said the biggest pile was his.
With his help, she said she was able to bring in a car-crushing machine to dispose of about 700 cars.
We crushed everything and anything for weeks, she said. Mr. Staley leaves behind his wife Florine, daughter Iola Stevenson, sons Cecil, Archie, David, Danny and Norman, daughters May Etmanskie, Eva Hulton, Annette Trahan and Juliette Staley, all of Wolfe Island; sons Louie and Larry and daughters Rena and Barbara Staley, all of Kingston; sons Joe and Billy, both of Calgary, and 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Leaves sisters
He also leaves his sisters May (Mrs. Floyd Eves), of Kingston; Mrs. Rena Mason of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; and Noreen (Mrs. Sylvester Woods), of Watertown, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his daughter Patricia, sister Mrs. Eva Docteur, and brother Melville Staley.
Mr. Staleys funeral was conducted in Sacred Heart Church on Wolfe Island. He was buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery on Wolfe Island. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Wolfe Island Volunteer Fire Department would be appreciated by the Staley family.
