Death on Wolfe Island
The death took place on Wolfe Island, Sunday morning of Johanna Mahoney, widow of the late Ennis Mahoney. The deceased, seventy-eight years old, had been ailing for some months, and for the past two weeks has been confined to her bed. She was born in Ireland, coming to this country when a child. Five daughters, Mrs. Frank McCue, Kingston; Mrs. McTaggart, Wolfe Island; Mrs. Mulvaney, Pittsburgh; Mrs. McCarthy and Miss Margaret, Rochester, N.Y., and three sons, Jeremiah, John and David are left to mourn her loss. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning to St. Mary�s church, Wolfe Island.

Irmagarde Scholz

Attended by a large number of sympathetic friends, the funeral of Irmagarde Scholz, aged ten years, who was instantly killed at Wolfe Island on Monday night when she was crushed against a beam as she stood up on a truck that was backing out of a garage, was held on Wednesday morning from the home of her parents, to Sacred Heart Church, Wolfe Island, where requiem mass was said by Rev. Father Carey. The tragic death of the little girl affected the entire community and floral and spiritual expressions of sympathy were numerous.
Following the requiem mass, internment took place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The flower-bearers were four little girl friends of the deceased child. Gertrude Johnson, Doris Hogan, Rosetta Briceland and Natalie Mosier. The pall-bearers were Cecil Greenwood, Fleming White, Neil O�Brien, D.J. Greenwood, Robert Tarrant and Charles Cosgrove. The honorary pall-bearers were Patrick Perdue, teacher, and the pupils of S.S.S. No. 4.
Surviving relatives are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Scholz, one brother Euhart, and her grandparents, who reside in Germany.

Wolfe Island
Wolfe Island�The funeral of the late Mrs. Charles Hall
was held to Trinity Church were Rev. James Daw conducted the service, after which the remains were placed in the family plot in the Anglican Church Cemetery. The late Mrs. Hall is survived by her husband, one daughter, Martha, and on son, William of Cape Vincent. The pall-bearers were Robert Bullis, John McDonald, William Hogan, Harry Boyd, Lloyd Doyle and Allen Keyes.
Many from the Island attended the funeral in Kingston of the late James Briceland. Deceased had lived here for many years, later moving to Glenburnie.
Mrs. Michael Doyle and son, Lloyd are near Cape Vincent, N.Y., attending the funeral of Mrs. Doyle�s sister.

NOTE:

A May 14, 1902 article talks of the death of Thomas Briceland at Watertown NY after a lingering illness of cancer of the stomach. His relatives have left to attend his funeral. Deceased was married about 15 years ago to Miss Ellen, daughter of Arthur Laughlin, our esteemed townsman. A mother, four sons and one daughter survive him. He was a member of the CMBA and carried $2,000 life insurance on his life.

Mrs. Cora Lalonde

There passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Reveil, 12 Colborne Street, on Sunday, Mrs. Cara Lalonde, widow of Francis Lalonde after an illness of over eight weeks.
Deceased was formerly Cora Davis and was born on Wolfe Island, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Davis. She had resided in the city since hr marriage, fifty-five years ago. She was a member of St. George�s Cathedral and a member of the Chosen Friends.
Surviving her are two sons, Edward and Alexander of Toronto and one daughter, Mrs. George S. Reveil of Kingston; also one brother, Harry Davis of Gananoque, and four grand children. The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:45 o�clock to St. George�s Cathedral where service will be conducted by Rev. A.J. Anderson.

Mrs. Jennie Horne

Word has been received here of the death at Sarnia on Saturday of Mrs. Jennie Horne, widow of Captain Grant Horne. Deceased was formerly Jennie Matier. The remains will be brought here and on the arrival of the 1:30 train will be taken to the Anglican cemetery at Wolfe Island where internment will be made. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Dawe of Wolfe Island.

Mrs. Thomas Casey

A very dear friend of the Wolfe Island residents passed away at the Hotel Dieu Hospital on Wednesday morning last in the person of Mrs. Thomas Casey, formerly Miss Emma U. Woods, following a very short illness. She was thirty-two years of age and had been married for three years.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Casey, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Woods of Cataraqui; one sister, Mrs. Elwood Fisher, Smiths Falls and six brothers; Walter and Howard of Kingston; Clifford, Ross, Charles and Gordon of Cataraqui.
The funeral was held on Friday, march 29th from the home of her mother and father, Cataraqui, and was largely attended by her many friends and relatives. The service was conducted by Rev. R. Seymore, Cataraqui, who as assisted by Rev. Mr. Dawe, of Wolfe Island. The six brothers acted as pall-bearers for their deceased sister.
The number of floral tributes was proof of the high esteem in which Mrs. Casey was held by her friends. The remains were taken to the vault at Cataraqui and will be interred on Wolfe Island at a later date.

Mrs. James Berry

A very old resident of Wolfe island passed away at the home of her son, Richard Berry on Wednesday morning last in the person of Alice Montgomery, wife of the late James Berry, following an illness of several weeks. She was eighty-two years of age and until her illness had been very active. Mrs. Berry was a life-long resident of Wolfe Island. The funeral was held on Friday from her son�s home to Christ Church Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. James Dawe.
Mrs. Berry is survived by one son, Richard of Wolfe island; four grandchildren of Oshawa; one brother, Frank Montgomery of Wolfe Island; six sisters, Edith and Minnie of Wolfe Island; Bett, Mattie and Mrs. Patterson of Watertown, N.Y.; Mrs. Brooks of Marshal, Michigan.

JOSEPH J. BROPHY

Joseph J. Brophy, well-known proprietor of the popular summer place Brophy�s Point, on the St. Lawrence River, five miles east of Kingston, at which place hundreds of picnics have been held from the city, passed away on Thursday morning following a brief illness. Deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.William Brophy of this city and he was a life-long resident of this community, although considerable of his time was spent at Brophy�s Point.
Mr. Brophy was a member Frontenac Council, Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Frank and William of Kingston, and four daughters, Mrs. Harold Mattson of Kingston, Mrs. John Collery of Irvington, N.J., and Mary and Helen at home; also one sister, Miss Helena Brophy of Kingston.
The funeral will be held from his residence, 50 Wellington Street, on Saturday morning to St. Mary�s Cathedral where requiem mass will be sung at nine o�clock. Interment will be in St. Mary�s cemetery.

At his residence on Wednesday, August 8, 1979, Malcolm MacDonald, beloved husband of the late Gertrude McCue, dear father of Susan, Brian, Mrs. Theresa Broeders, Jim, Anne Marie and Dan, dear brother of Mrs. Gerald McNamee (Rita), Mrs. Charles Sutherland (Bonnie), Mrs. M. Sudak (Eileen) and Mrs. William Reason (Marie), predeceased by Mrs. James Brown (Ruby), Mrs. William Briceland (Myrtle), Sanford and Earl MacDonald, and Mrs. T. X. Donovan (Vera), also survived by six grandchildren. Resting at the funeral residence of Gordon F. Tompkins, 49 Colborne Street (at Clergy). Peacefully at Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, on Thursday, June 3, 1999, in her 86th year, Rita Agnes (MacDonald) McNamee, of Kingston, formerly of Toledo, Ontario. Born, April 10, 1914, on Wolfe Island. Wife of the late Gerald McNamee. Loving mother of Pat (Ann) of Kingston, Don (Patti) of Kingston, Jack (Barb) of Brockville, Larry (Marie) of Aylmer, P.Q., Richard (Patsy) of Orleans, and Joe (Terry) of Stittsville. Predeceased by infant children Mary Catherine, Anne Marie and James Matthew. Grandmother of Catherine, Theresa, Jim, Steve, Don, Laura, Brent, Aimee, Julie, Gerry, Melissa, Melanie, Kelly, Katie, and Mary Shea. Great grandmother of Erinn, Ellen, Alec, Philip and Thomas. Survived by sisters Eileen Sudak and Bonnie (Ron) Sutherland of Kingston. Predeceased by sisters Ruby Brown, Myrtle Briceland, Vera Donovan, Marie Reason and brothers Sandy, Earl and Mac MacDonald. Survived by brother-in-law Bill Reason and sister-in-law Helen Macdonald, both of Kingston. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. MRS. JAMES KENNEY

On Saturday August 10, Maria Kemp, beloved wife of Capt. James Kenney, passed to her eternal rest at her home on Wolfe Island after a very brief illness.
The deceased was sixty-eight years old and was a daughter of the late James Kemp and Catherine A. Brown of Wolfe Island. On March 17, 1891, she was united in marriage to James Kenney of Wolfe Island and since that time has resided in the village of Wolfe Island, when she proved a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family and beloved by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her loss a sorrowing husband; four sons, James Kenney of Clayton, N.Y., Capt. C. J. Kenney of Wolfe Island, Kenneth Kenney of Watertown, N.Y., and Mate George Kenney of Str. Keybell; and four daughters, Mrs. Hanson of Kingston, Mrs. Charles Wall of Toronto, Mrs. H. LaRush of Wolfe Island, Mrs. Hutchinson of Alexander Bay, N.Y., and William Kemp of Westbrooke.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. to Trinity Church, Wolfe Island, and was conducted by Rev. James Dawe, assisted by Rev. Braman. The casket was banked with beautiful wreaths.
The flower girls were Misses Lola Hogan, Marjorie and Dorothy Henderson, Pearl Cosgrove, Alice Bolton, Reta Aharie, Gertrude Johnson, Audrey Dawe, Catherine White and Rosetta Briceland.
At the conclusion of the service the remains were placed in Trinity Church Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Craig Russell, Thomas J. White, Edgar Seville, Monty Fawcett, Daniel LaRush and Peter J. Brown.

MRS. ROSE BRIGGS

Mrs. Rose Briggs, widow of Theodore C. Briggs, passed away at her home in Calgary, Alta., recently, aged 84? years. She was born in Kingston the daughter of Alexander and Ellen Harold and spend her girlhood here. In 1871 she married Theodore Briggs of Wolfe Island, where they resided for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs moved to Calgary twenty-six years ago and her husband predeceased her nine years ago. One daughter, Mrs. Nellie Pyke, in Calgary, survives.

ELLEN A. KANE

At the House of Providence on Friday morning there passed away Ellen A. Kane, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Kane of Wolfe Island. Miss Kane was born on Wolfe Island but had spent the past thirty years in the city. She had been in ill-health for some years.
She is survived by one brother, Michael Kane of this city and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held from the Chapel of Our Mother of Sorrows, House of Providence on Monday morning. The requiem mass will be sung at 7:30 o�clock after which burial will take place on Wolfe Island.

PAUL COFFEY

Funeral of two year old Paul Coffey who was drowned when he slipped into shallow water from the Wolfe Island Wharf, was held from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coffey, Wolfe Island, to Sacred Heart Church. Rev. J. S. Ryan officiated at prayers and Rev. Charles Baker was present at the graveside service.
Pall-bearers were Edward Kenney, Richard Greenwood, Richard LaRush and Richard McDonnell.
Eight little friends of Paul�s acted as flower-bearers. They were Cecil Staley, Guy LaRush, Dick Feeney, Darrell Staley, Ross Hongh, Gordon Greenwood, Earl Greenwood and Robin Murphy.
Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Brian, seven and Kevin, five; two sisters, Anne, four and Mary, five months; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Coffey of Read and Mr. and Mrs. James O�Reilly, Wolfe Island.

CECIL LAWSON

The funeral of Cecil Lawson, who died in the Kingston General Hospital, as a result of injuries received in an accident, was held from the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Caverly, Cataraqui. Rev. R. Seymour conducted the funeral service, assisted by Rev. E. Lawson of Kingston and Rev. W. March of Wolfe Island.
The hymns �Rock of Ages� and �Safe in the Arms of Jesus� were sung during the service and a duet �In the Upper Garden� was sung by Miss Fanny Knight and Mr. H. Knight of Sydenham. Many beautiful floral tributes banked the casket. Among the floral tributes was a pillow from the Continuation and Public School of Wolfe Island where the boy had been a pupil since September and another from the United Sunday School of which he was a member. He was six years and five months old.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Lawson of Wolfe Island; one brother, George, and one sister, Harriet; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Caverly; and his grandmother, Mrs. C. J. Richards of Cataraqui; as well as several aunts and uncles. Interment was in Cataraqui Cemetery.

ANDREW JOHNSON

The death occurred suddenly at Wolfe Island of Andrew Johnson. He had been around all day at his work and had gone to the village to meet his daughter, who is attending Notre Dame Convent, Kingston. As the family were preparing to partake of the evening meal about six o�clock, Mr. Johnson was taken suddenly ill and passed away a few hours later. Deceased was seventy-four years old and was a son of the late Michael Johnson and Catharine Sullivan.
On October 24, 1897, he was united in marriage to Etta Hogan and since that time has resided on the south side of the Island. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife; three sons, John, Vincent and Howard, all of Wolfe Island, and two daughters, Mary and Esterene at home; also one brother, M. V. Johnson of Wolfe Island, and two sisters, Mrs. James McKee and Miss Alice Johnson of Kingston.
The funeral was held to the Church of the Sacred Heart where requiem mass was sung by Rev. J. F. Feeney. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and neighbours. Interment took place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Stuart Armstrong, Oscar Fawcett, Daniel Leacy, Thomas Lyons, Mathew Flynn and Daniel Smith.

ALICE JAMES
Wolfe Island - The funeral of the late Mrs. Alice James, formerly Alice MacDonald, who passed away at the House of Providence, Kingston, was held on Saturday morning to the Sacred Heart Church where requiem mass was sung by Rev. Father Feeney. Six nephews of the deceased acted as pall-bearers. The late Mrs. James is survived by four brothers, Jerry, John, James and Joseph, all of Wolfe Island, also one sister, Mrs. Thomas Moran, Buffalo, N.Y.

ARCHIBALD MACDONALD

The death occurred very suddenly on Monday of a well-known and respected citizen of Wolfe Island in the person of Archibald MacDonald. He was born on Wolfe Island, a son of Alexander MacDonald and Ellen LaFleur, and was the oldest of a family of six children. Peter, Ellen, Isabel, Captain Allen late of the SS Wolfe Islander and Annie. He was the only surviving member, his brothers and sisters having predeceased him. He was born in 1862 being 75 years of age at the time of his death, was a stone-mason by trade and was well known throughout the island. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Ellen MacDonald. Requiem high mass was sung by Rev. J. P. Feeney and interment took place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Jack Briceland, Charles Higgins, D. Higgins, R. McReady, Peter Brown and James MacDonald.

ARCHIBALD MACDONALD

One of the villages best known residents passed away on Monday morning when Archibald MacDonald was stricken with a heart attack. He had been in the usual good health last week and was looking after the work of filling his ice house, which furnish the villagers with ice during the summer months. On Saturday morning a doctor was called but did not think it was serious. Mr. McDonald was a plasterer and a mason by trade and did nearly all the islander�s work. He resided in the village for the last thirty years. His funeral took place at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday morning where a requiem mass was sung by Rev. J. F. Feeney after which his remains were placed in the family plot here. He leaves a wife and nephew Sandy McDonald of Kingston, and one niece, Mrs. Margaret Perdue of the Island.

THOMAS ALBERT ROGERS

Death came suddenly from pneumonia to Thomas Albert Rogers at his home in Buffalo. He was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Armstrong Rogers and was born on Wolfe Island 43 years ago. He was twice married, his first wife being Myrtle Moist, who died about three years ago. He married in February 1936, Mrs. Jessie Corcoran who survives him. Before going to Buffalo, he was associated with the Massey-Harris Company of Toronto, and in Buffalo had been employed by the Buffalo Scale Co.
He was a member of Buffalo Trinity Lodge I.O.O.F. He is survived by his widow, a stepson, Harold of Buffalo; three brothers, Earl of Clayton, George of Wolfe Island, Garnet of Adams; two sisters, Mrs. John Allison of Wolfe Island and Mrs. William Wood of Sydenham.
The funeral was held from his late home, 111 19th Street with burial in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. The relatives from out of town attending were Mrs. John Allison and George Rogers of Wolfe Island and Garnet Rogers of Adams, N. Y.

THOMAS FRANCIS GREENWOOD

On Monday, November 25, Thomas Francis Greenwood passed to his eternal rest after an illness of but a few days. The deceased was forty-nine years old and was a son of the late Francis Greenwood and Ellen Donovan. He received his early education in the separate school on Wolfe Island and later attended Regiopolls College.
On Sept. 17, 1917, he was united in marriage to Mary McGlynn and since that time resided in their comfortable home facing Batteau Channel where he proved a successful farmer devoted to his family, kind to his neighbours and beloved by all who knew him.
He leaves to mourn his loss a sorrowing wife, four sons, Francis, Glen, Joseph and Reginald and four daughters, Lillian, Mary, Pearl and May. Many beautiful floral and spiritual offerings testified to the esteem in which he was held by friends and neighbours on the Island.
The funeral took place from his home to the Sacred Heart Church where a solemn requiem mass was sung by Rev. J. F. Feeney and was very largely attended. The remains were then placed in the cemetery of the Sacred Heart Church. The pall-bearers were Mssrs. Maxim Greenwood, Oliver Greenwood, Vincent Greenwood, John Greenwood, Herman Staley and John Leacy.

WILLIAM COOPER

The funeral of William Cooper of Wolfe Island took place from his residence January 11 to Point Alexander Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. C.A. McLaren, United Church minister. Mr. Cooper had the misfortune to fall on the ice the day after Christmas when bringing in some wood. Although he later regained consciousness, he did not seem to recover from the shock of the fall. He was an old resident of Wolfe Island and was a faithful attendant at the Methodist Church and later at the United Church. He was born in Devonshire England, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Cooper and came to Wolfe Island as a young man. The deceased is survived by two brothers, several nieces and nephews and an adopted daughter, Miss Jessie Cooper of Wolfe Island. His wife, formerly Mary I. Keyes, predeceased him seven years ago. The pall-bearers were A. C. Day, R. H. Keyes, John Keyes, Allen Keyes, Wilmer Keyes and E. Seville, nephews of the deceased.

MICHAEL KANE

The funeral of Michael Kane was held on Thursday morning from James Reid�s funeral parlours to St. Mary�s Cathedral where requiem mass was sung at nine o�clock in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives of deceased by Rev. M. J. Brady. Floral tributes and spiritual offerings were numerous on the casket. The remains were placed in the vault to await burial on Wolfe Island later. The pall-bearers were William Roche, John Bain, William Bryson, Col. N. C. Sherman, Gerald Green of Watertown, N.Y. and William Moore.

ALEXANDER JOSEPH MAHONEY

Peacefully at Hotel Dieu Hospital on Monday, May 13th, 1996, in his 84th year, Alexander Mahoney, loving son of the late David Mahoney and Annette Docteur, brother of Monroe Mahoney of Kingston and the late John Mahoney, sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Born, raised and lived most of his life on Wolfe Island. In the last few years he resided at Mae�s place, 1875 Battersea Road. Friends will be received in the Central Chapel of the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home, 49 Colborne Street (at Clergy) on Tuesday between the hours of 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday between the hours 2-4and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John the Apostle Church, 88 Patrick Street, on Thursday, May 16th, at 2:30 p.m. Rite of Committal St. Mary�s Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Arthritis Society would be appreciated by the family. (Donations preferred by cheque please)

CURTIS (CHARLIE) MACDONALD

Beloved son of Greg MacDonald and Claire Gurnsey, in his 19th year, was taken from his family and friends on July 25th, 1999.
Raised on Wolfe Island, Charlie spent countless hours on the family farm. He loved the outdoors and when he wasn�t helping with chores, gardening, driving tractor or cutting wood, he would try his luck at fishing. He was involved in K.M.H.A., K.B.A., and Loyalist Gymnastics. He attended Sacred Heart School, Regiopolis Notre Dame and K.C.V.I. Charlie had a lot of friends and rightly so, he loved to visit and was a good listener.
He is survived by his parents, Greg MacDonald and Claire (Simard) Gurnsey, his sister Brooke MacDonald and brother Luke Gurnsey, grandparents Don and Mary Frances MacDonald, and Helen Simard, all of Wolfe Island. Great-grandmother Kathleen McKenna. His extended family Stephen and Terri Anne Gurnsey, Yvonne and Megan VanNoten and Craig Vance. Also several cousins, aunts and uncles.
Predeceased by his grandfather Raymond Simard (1978) and great-grandfather Rodney McKenna (1988).
A private wake and funeral officiated by Father Eugene O�Reilly were held at the home of Greg MacDonald on July 29, 1999. Family and friends were received at Sacred Heart Cemetery for Rite of Committal Prayers and gave their last respects to Charlie. Pallbearers were Charlie Simard, Marty Krebbs, Tyler MacDonald, Dan MacDonald, Joe Vasko and Brian Burke.

Funeral Obsequies - The funeral of William Snell, whose remains were found in the sch. Norway, took place on Saturday afternoon. The members of the Sailor's Union in this city, numbering about 40 seamen, attended in a body. Messrs. John McCutcheon, Kingston, F. Rogey, J. Harris, W. McRobbie, S. Dick and A. Davy, Garden Island, acted as pall-bearers. Rev. Father Spratt, of Wolfe Island, performed the funeral ceremonies
