Grimshaw always grinning about something
By Mike Norris

SPORTS - Annabelle Twiddy will always remember the grin.
She always had a silly grin on her face. She was always grinning about something. She was always a very happy person.
Twiddy was speaking of Claudette Grimshaw, an outstanding softball pitcher for three decades who died of cancer at her home Saturday. She was 52.
Earlier this month Miss Grimshaw was selected to the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame.
Everybody wanted to be as good as she was.
Miss Grimshaw starred on the pitching mound for Kingston teams at the local and provincial levels, from 1969 to 1983. She helped the Kingston All-Stars win the 1972 Ontario Intermediate AA championship and the 1975 provincial intermediate B title. In 1981, she was honoured by the Provincial Womens Softball Association for pitching a no-hitter during the provincial tournament playoffs. Rarely was there a day during the softball season when Miss Grimshaws name didnt appear in this newspaper for her pitching and hitting exploits.
She was an integral part of every team she was on, said Twiddy, who caught for Miss Grimshaw on those all-star teams. It didnt matter if I didnt show up, but it mattered if she didnt.
Miss Grimshaw loved to play, added Twiddy.
She took so much joy in playing the game, partly because she was so good. She had an exceptional personality.
Kathryn Running, Miss Grimshaws companion, agreed.
She was very personable. I first became her friend in the early 80s and whenever you went somewhere she stopped every three seconds to greet someone. She would be warm and extend a hand. It took forever to get down Princess Street, she would have to stop and say hello to everyone she knew.
She made quite an impact in the womens community and the extended athletic community.
Miss Grimshaws Hall of Fame selection kept her alive the last little while, said Running.
She got the letter in December and although it was supposed to be a secret until Jan. 8, we told people because we didnt know if she might not be here.
That night [at City Hall, where the members were announced] a woman came up to her and said, I played against you 20 years ago. You struck me out all the time. They laughed about that.
Later that night, we took her to emergency, she was in so much pain. That night [at City Hall] you wouldnt have known it. She put on a brave face. She never really recovered after that night.
Miss Grimshaw played womens hockey in the 1970s before taking up triathlons the following decade.
She was a strong competitor but in a very gentle and participatory way, said Running. She was certainly a winner. She had a long history of excelling in whatever she took on.
From 1990 to 96, Miss Grimshaw and Running organized a group known as Women in Sport, Entertainment and Recreation. It provided women with the opportunity to enjoy sports and recreation in a non-competitive atmosphere, including weekly basketball and badminton games.
You didnt have to be a star to participate, said Running.
Miss Grimshaw is survived by her mother, Margaret Grimshaw of Wolfe Island, and brother Peter.
Friends will be received at the Central Chapel of the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Homes, 49 Colborne St. (at Clergy), today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Wolfe Island tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

He continued to skate and play tennis throughout his life and was a top club player from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to the Kingston Tennis Club, where he met his future wife Mary.

Later he served during WWII as a lieutenant at Barriefield, engaged in secret research on new technologies such as gun laying radar. Wilf also worked on other wartime projects including construction of a plant in Sarnia for the production of synthetic rubber, the expansion of an existing steel plant in Welland, welding devices intended to repair tanks in the subzero weather on the Russion Front, and a system that controlled searchlights from up to a mile away, thus protecting the operators from enemy fire.

Wilf (or "Fred" to his American friends and collegues) was a Mason, and enjoyed a long and interesting career in engineering focussed on power systems (beginning with steam, ending with nuclear) in Canada and the United States, ending his career as a "25-year man" with Bechtel Power Corporation in New York City and Washington, D.C. Upon retirement he and Mary divided their time between Kingston and St. Petersburg.

We will sorely miss his imput and advice, his humour, his friendship and his abundant generosity

CONLEY, Jeffrey
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the very sudden passing of our loving and devoted son, Jeff Conley on April 5, 2005. Jeff was a person who lived life to the fullest, he was a man of a million stories! His guitar filled the air with his creativity. Some of the songs we could actually recognize. He was a person that wore his heart on his sleeve. He was always there if you needed him, not expecting anything in return. His acts of kindness were many. He loved life. Jeff was a person who cared deeply for his family and always kept them close at heart, especially his mom and dad, Carole and Gary Conley. Not a day would go by that Jeff would not call `just because'. Jeff also leaves behind his loving sister Stacy Lawson and brother-in-law and friend Chris Lawson. Nephews Curtis and Adam will deeply miss their `Uncle Jeffrey' their number one fishing buddy. Jeff will also be missed by his brother Craig and his wife Susan. Nephew Darren and niece Emma will be filled with wonderful and humorous stories about the adventures of `Uncle Jeffrey's' life. Many people come in and out of our lives, but only a few are remembered forever!! Jeff also left behind many, many friends and they will keep his memory alive!! Please join with us not to grieve the passing of our young son, brother and friend, but to celebrate his life! Smile that we were blessed to have known and to have loved him. Resting at the James Reid Funeral Home (John Counter Blvd at Hig hway 2) on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial to be held at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Amherstview on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. Father Jack Grainger officiating. Rite of Committal at the Cataraqui Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and also in Jeff's memory, please donate a toy to the Kingston and Area Toy Drive this Christmas. We regret to learn from the Colonist that the steamer Bay State, bound to Toronto, on Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock, ran ashore in her passage through the eastern channel of the Island; a dense fog prevailing at the time. The steamers Zimmerman and Hercules immediately went to her assistance to tow her off. A number of passengers were on board, who were conveyed across from the Island in small boats. One of the hands employed on the steamer Hercules, while engaged in cutting a rope, was struck by it with great violence, severely injuring his head and face. He was immediately removed over to the hospital, where he remains in a very precarious condition. Up to a late hour at night, the Bay State remained fast, the other steamers being unable to approach her in consequence of the high wind prevailing through the day. We learn that the injured man's name is Crawford, and his home is at Garden Island, where he has a wife and family. He is about thirty-five years of age, and an intelligent active seaman.

-A Wolfe Islander Dead
Wolfe Island, Nov 19- The many friends of Robert White, formerly of Wofle Island, were grieved to learn of his death in Rochester. Rumor says one of our separate school teachers is shortly to take unto herself a pertner for life. William Henderson and family have removed to Williamsville; he will be much missed. Our village shoemaker John Bain, by industry and honest dealing, has earned for himself a large trade. Tax collector Robert Payne is on his rounds. Our commissioners, Messrs, Spoor and Mosier, are attending the last session of the county council for the year 1900. The question now before the people is who are to be the candidates for the county again. John Briceland has taken the contract of painting William Laird's house. Mr Wiggins, confined in the general hospital, has returned to his home much improved, and speaks highly of the treatment he received while there.
