DEATH OF MR. KIEL
He suddenly expires at Collins Bay while driving cattle.

The people of Collins Bay and vicinity have a sad tale to talk about now. Old Mr. Kiel, who has lived on the Purdy place about a mile out of the village for a number of years, left the house yesterday morning to take the cows to pasture. He had not returned by noon and one of the children was sent to look for him. The lad took a direct course for the pasture field and when about a half a mile out, was horrified to discover the lifeless body of the old man lying on the side of the road, in a lane, where, from his reclining position, it would seem as if Mr. Kiel had sat down to rest. There were no signs of pain on the old mans face, but instead a placid smile had possession of his countenance. Assistance was at once summoned and the remains removed to the house. Mr. Kiel was over seventy years of age and has a brother, Peter, resident on Wolfe Island. The old man has been living with son at Collins Bay for some years back. The son had only left on Thursday night on the str. Tecumesh, bound for the upper lakes, serving as watchman. He has been telegraphed to at a way port. It is supposed that a sudden attack of heart failure was the cause of the old mans death, although he was in the best of health when he left the house.

ALEX KIEL
He Lived a Very Eventual Career He Was a True Man

As usual, after milking, Alexander Kiel, of Collins Bay, drove the cows to pasture, and not returning as soon as might be expected, his daughter-in-law went to look for him and found him sitting by a fence. Supposing him to be asleep, she went to wake him, but noticed that his eyes were closed and his pipe and case were laying by his feet. On touching him, she found, to her horror, that he was dead. As soon as possible she procured help and he was carried to the house, where the whole neighbourhood mingled their sympathy and condolence with the bereaved family. His was an eventful life. Seventy-three years ago he was born in Inverness shire, Scotland, and when but a boy, emigrated, with his family, to this country and took up their abode on Wolfe Island, at that time an unbroken wilderness, inhabited by wolves and other wild hearts, and, although exposed to dreadful hardship in clearing up a farm, they persevered until finally they had a comfortable home. With a view to better his condition, the deceased shipped on the Queen, one of Mr. Calvins vessels, and continued on her for several years. He then went back to farming on the island, married, reared a family of four sons, all honest, well-behaved, young men. His wife died about nine years ago. It was in the fall of the year, and fearing some desecration of her remains, he placed a canvas tent on her grave, and travelled four miles, every evening, through deep snow and inclement weather, and watched in that tent, the long dreary nights, all winter. In the spring he decorated her grave with rare plants and flowers and has continued to do so ever since. In religion he was scrupulously conscientious, a strict believer in the Presbyterian form of worship, honest and upright in all the affairs of life. His demeanour was modest and unassuming, and he was a kind and loving husband and indulgent parent. It may be truly said of him, that he had not an enemy in the world.

MRS. ALEXANDER KIEL

The people of Wolfe Island are again mourning the death of an old and estimable resident. Mrs. Alexander Kiel had been ailing for some time, but no one thought her case really dangerous, until within a few days of her death, which took place on the 11th inst. in the 47th year of her age. She was a devout and zealous Christian, and although racked with suffering, a placid resignation soothed her feverish brow, and a gentle spirit took its flight to realms of endless happiness. The casket containing her remains was tastefully decorated with wreaths of flowers. A beautiful offering of Mrs. T. D. Horne excited special interest, while Mrs. Grimshaw very tenderly placed beautiful garlands on and around the silent bier. The funeral services at the house, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Gow, were very solemn and impressive. A long line of mourners slowly wended their way to the burying place, and when the last remains were gently placed in the tomb, sorrow was apparent in all present. The services at the grave by the Rev. Mr. Wees were very affecting. Years will roll around ere the sad event will fade away.
