Neighbour, father, Islander, friend
by Brian Johnson
Jim McAllister
was the kind of guy youd want near when winter set in.The small one room school house seemed to stand alone on the Reed's Bay Road.
No one inside the tiny dwelling noticed, at first, as small wisps of snow began a familiar telltale pattern across the flat pasture. Even the trees did nothing to block the wind which started to gain speed and power across the nearby wide expanse of Lake Ontario. By mid-morning the light powderlike snow began to swirl around the frail building, even finding its way through tightly sealed windows and doorways. Every few minutes teacher and pupils glanced toward the snow blocked windows, the room'growing darker as daylight faded from view. The lessons continued until someone was told to turn on the lights. Nothing.. "The room was starting to get cold;" recalled Janet Martin. "We opened the door and looked outside. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face." Putting on their coats, the older ones huddled together, knowing they were probably here for the night."Then somebody thought they heard or saw, I can't remember which," Janet continued, "a team of horses coming up from the field."" Straining their eyes, everyone looked but saw nothing but whirlwinds of white snow, accompanied by a shriekingwind, threaten'ing to tear the roof right off the' building. 'Then there was no mistaking the familiar clomping of horse hooves pulling up just outside. Or the voice commanding the horses to stop just past the, door, bringing the big stoneboat even with the walkway. Opening the door, his tall frame blocking wind and snow alike, big Jim Mcallister calmly told the children to hold on to one another and climb on the big sleigh. "There had to be over 50 of us," said Janet. "I should have known a 'little snowstorm' wouldn't stop Dad. He simply followed the fence line from our farm to the schoolhouse."We followed the fence line straight down to Glen and Lucille Mosier's' place where most of the kids spent the night. I don't know how he did it. We couldn't see anything."
ATYPICAL WINTER DAY IN THE late 1950s or early '60s on Wolfe lsland could produce any kind of weather with very little warning. The day could start sunny and mild, and by mid-afternoon, drifting, blowing snow could obscure the fields and roads for days. Travel would be by horse and sleigh across the fields or nearby bays, the driver being confident in his own abilities to recognize landmarks, trees and fence lines, a skill learned from his father or familiarity with the land he farmed. Probably a combination of both. Winters on Wolfe Island today are milder. This could be due to the greenhouse effect or some other agent of climate change; maybe it's a good thing.
JAMES OSMUND McALLISTER, loving husband, father, grandfather, former reeve, fishing and hunting guide, ice-road expert, neighbour, rescuer of stranded children and friend to all who knew him, died peacefully on June 10 at his home on Wolfe Island with his wife, Zeta, by his side. He was 78.
"He enjoyed looking out at the river," said Zeta. "He seemed content, watching as the boats went by, and he loved having his family about - it brought him an inner peace."
"The McAllisters were the closest neighbours to us," recalled Father Eugene O'Reilly, pastor of Sacred Heart and native Wolfe Islander. "The O'Reilly connection with them goes way back. My grandfather and Jim's grandfather were very close. They probably visited with each other almost every day."
Growing up on the west end or "head" of Wolfe Island, the McAllisters, O'Reillys, Hogans, Fargos and Johnsons did almost everything together. I remember riding with him on the milk wagon to deliver the milk to the O'Shea's cheese factory," said Father Gene. "Jim was older than me by about five years and he was, in a sense, an older ,brother and he always treated me as such."
"We had a lot of fun together," said Clifton Fargo, another boyhood friend. "We went to the dances, played cards, and had a few narrow escapes out there on the 'ice road,' too."
Indeed, with his brother Carey, Noble Staley, Cliff Fargo and Buck Mullin, Jim would help set out the trees that would mark a safe path between Kingston and Wolfe Island, a distance of five kilometres across frozen Lake Ontario.
"We were usually the 'first ones out there," said Clifton.
"One time, Noble Staley's horse broke through and couldn't get out. I got Jim, who had another team, and all together we got him out, sleigh and all.
Father Gene continues with another pleasant memory: "Later on when I was about 15 or 16, when Jim was courting Julia Greenwood, I would get a ride with him to attend the dances in the village. I suspect that I might have been in the way, but Jim never showed any resentment" Shortly after, Jim married Julia and together they raised a family of six boys and three girls on their farm on the fifth concession road, just south of the Base Line. And it was here that Jim McAllister entered politics.
MAKING NO ELECTION PROMISES, Jim was elected reeve of Wolfe Island in 1955 and held that position until 1959. Jim's father, James Sr., had been on council for two years in 1947 and his grandfather, also named James, had been reeve in 1908.
Not busy enough, Jim McAllister started working for Maple Leaf Lodge as a hunting and fishing guide in the late 1950s. As he probably knew every inch of shoreline and pasture, Jim would be a natural for the job. He found his calling.
. "Dad worked here at the lodge for almost as long as I can remember," said son Mickey, who has since taken over his father's duties there. "It was his whole life. He just loved it here."
In 1963, when my grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack, it was neighbour Jim McAllister who was first on the scene. No doctor on the island, Jim bundled him up in the back of his Jeep wagon and took him to, town across the ice to the undertaker.
"I remember that time really well,
said daughter Janet Martin. "Dad knew Johnny was dead but he still laid him very carefully in the back for the trip across."
For the next three or four months, Jim and his family took care of the farm, milking and feeding cows, doing chores and anything else that needed to be done. Janet stayed with my grandmother, taking care of her while her whole world turned upside down.
JUST A FEW YEARS LATER, JIM himself would feel the pain of family loss. In the late '70s, Jim lost Julia to cancer. Just a few short years later his youngest daughter, Marion, was killed in a car accident. He stopped farming shortly thereafter.
Consoling himself in his duties at the lodge, Jim found happiness with Zeta Henderson, a lifelong resident of Wolfe Island. Together they started their new life as newlyweds at the east end or "foot" of the island.
"The lodge still came first," Zeta said, and then, smiling, remarked, I think I came in second. He really did love that job. Talking with me on the boat, Janet remembered her father as "the most honest ... he was the kindest ..." and then her voice trailed off. Look up the word "neighbour" in the dictionary. I'm sure it'll say, see Jim McAllister.:'

A Farmer Killed - And he formerly lived on Wolfe Island
A very sad accident occurred at Chaumont, NY, a town between Cape Vincent and Watertown, on Wednesday morning. Alva Grant; a farmer in that neighborhood, together with others, was drawing pressed hay to the railway siding. When the mail train from Watertown approached, apparently, Grant did not hear nor see it until too late. The locomotive crashed into his wagon, killing the unfortunate man outright and one of the team. The remaining horse was so badly injured it had to be shot. The train was brought to a standstill as soon as possible, but human aid was beyond benefit. Grant leaves a widow and some young children. He formerly lived on Wolfe Island. The accident delayed the arrival of the train in Cape Vincent for half an hour.

MRS. SUGHRUE DEAD -Sughrue,Catharine (nee Welch)
Daily British Whig Kingston Mon Dec 30
A Benevolent Woman Faithful to Her Church -

The death of Mrs. Sughrue, widow of the late Capt. John Sughrue took place in the House of Providence on Friday, December 27th. The deceased was shown every kindness by the sisters. Having two nieces sisters in the institution, she was no stranger. One of her nieces, in company with several other of the sisters, was at her side during her last moments, the other being stationed at St. Vincents Hospital, Brockville. She was also attended by the relatives of her deceased husband. The remains were immediately removed to the residence of Capt. W. D. Sughrue, (grandson of Captain John Sughrue), where they remained until Saturday, when they were taken to Howe Island, her former home, for burial.
Mrs. Sughrue, was in her younger days, when a resident of Howe Island, well known among the Roman Catholic clergy for her liberality and generosity, as it always fell to her lot to throw open her house to the entertaining of the religious that visited the island, and she and her husband, did all with willing hearts. She was a whole-souled woman; no person in want applied to her in vain. She was a member of a large family, at one time well known in Kingston, her name being Catharine Welch. Her funeral took place on Sunday, to St. Philomens church on Howe Island, where a solem libera was chanted for the dead. The body was then taken to the vault. The remains were followed from Kingston, by the relatives of Captain Sughrue, and some of the islanders. From the house to the church, Michael OBrien, of the separate schools (nephew to the deceased), and Miss Bessie Welch, sister, were the first in the cortege. T. OConnor, merchant tailor of Gananoque, and family, also attended, being related by marriage. Mrs. OConnor was one of her favorite nieces. John Lee and family, Gananoque, drove up to the funeral, the deceased and her husband being old-time friends.
