Wolfe Island SchoolsPlease email me if you have any information on any Wolfe Island schools, or if you have any school or class photos.Special Thank you's to Anne Marie Benson, Theresa Broeders and the Wolfe Island Womens Institute. General Information:Because the boundaries of Wards and School Sections underwent many changes throughout the years, and also that because of disputes over where schools should be located in a section they were often moved or rebuilt up, down or across concessions to appease the rate payers. This makes it, in some cases, difficult to make positive identifications. Also confusing is that in those days the public schools were titled S.S.# (number here) which stood for School Section # and the Catholic schools were titled S.S.S.# (number here) which stood for Separate School Section #. 1846- 7 school districts- from Smiths gazetteer In 1850 there were 286 students attending school in this township. Teachers were boarded around the area and expected to teach with only a few books. The teachers were to follow strict rules regarding their own behavior. -in 1845, a Mr. McLean broke the temperance pledge and quickly left SS2 rather than face the trustees wrath(County of a 1000 Lakes) There are now fifteen schools in this township, including the separate school. The people in all the sections are anxious to support them, but they do not seem aware of the necessity for providing proper libraries, maps and apparatus. This microfilm consists of the annual reports of local superintendents and boards of trustees. The School Act of 1850 required County Councils to appoint a Local Superintendent, usually a clergyman or physician, to supervise the local Common (Public) Schools as a part time position. By March 1 of each year, every Superintendent was required to submit an annual inspection report using a form from the Education Office. In the case of cities and incorporated towns and villages, the report was submitted by the Board of Trustees. Included: A financial report on each of the area's schools; A status report on each school including: teacher's names, salary, religion, experience and qualifications; the enrolment in each subject; the text books used; and each school's construction, age, condition, and state of the school grounds.
