*[Q: What do you do? A: I do genealogy.]
The Pleasant Dale Cemetery, originally known as the Steele Cemetery, is located on the north side of County Road 300 North, between roads 400 West and 500 West in Kirkland Township, Adams County, Indiana. The coordinates are 40 degrees 47 minutes 15 seconds North Latitude and 085 degrees 01 minutes 26.42 seconds West Longitude. (Elevation is 826 feet.) A large monument in the cemetery has the inscription:
"Record of Steele Cemetery Martin Coffman deeded to James Russell | Wm. Brown } trustees Gideon Billman | on Jan. 10, 1846 Sec.14,Tp.27,Range 13. 1/2 acre Samuel L Rugg, Recorder." |
From the Introduction in the Pleasant Dale Cemetery Association booklet of the Articles of Association, By-Laws, and Rules and Regulations, published in 1944: "January 10, 1846, nearly one hundred years ago, the pioneer citizens residing in Kirkland Township and vicinity, selected as a burial place for the departed dead of the community, a beautiful shady plot in the forest on the Coffman farm (known today as the Zimmerman homestead.)... The original one-half acre of land was purchased for a burial ground for the sum of $2.00, deeded January 10, 1846 by Martin Coffman to James Russel, William Brown and Gideon Billman -- Trustees of the Steele Cemetery (Later changed to Pleasant Dale Cemetery). Recorded in deed record C. page 287, by Samuel S. Rugg, recorder of Adams County. Other trustees who have served are Frank Arnold, William Arnold, Edward Arnold, William Zimmerman, Edward Zimmerman, Milton Zimmerman. Present trustees -- Fred Adler, Samuel Henschen and Oliver V. Dilling. Secretary -- Victor Byerly. Term of trustees -- Three years. Term of Secretary -- One year."
Improvements to this cemetery have been the addition of white vinyl fencing along the east and north property lines, a new white vinyl sign by the road, and most recently (blacktop/asphalt) paving of the circular drive, as well as other landscaping.
The Pleasant Dale Cemetery Association holds an annual meeting and operates under the 1944 Rules and Regulations. Most of the record keeping has been since this time of organization. Each officer has maps of the cemetery which identify ownership of each sold lot.
This extraction was taken from walking the cemetery during the month of May 1998 and was compared with the 1957 published reading done by the Mary Penrose Wayne, DAR Chapter from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Errors and discrepancies were noted in this typescript. The use of this record was helpful in interpreting a few older worn stones that were difficult to read in 1998. Then, a comparison was made with a copy of the two maps (the original older section and the newer addition) that are the cemetery association's official records. Earlier versions has been corrected, updated, and revised in August 1999 and April 2000.
Variations in this reading from most cemetery records are that a description of the stone is include and that personal and genealogical notes are mentioned with the gravestone inscriptions. This is part of a larger work in progress, Pleasant Dale Cemetery Families, which notes the interrelatedness of many of the Kirkland Twp. families buried in this cemetery. Apparent extraneous material is also included in this list, so that a researcher may gather clues for further investigation. Local newspaper obituary notices are now included. Newspaper obituary notices are used with permission.
Contact Thomas Liby for these or more photographs available as attachments to E-mail.
This reading follows the order of beginning at the south west corner (closest to the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren building across the road) and reading the stones from south to north. Whereas the 1957 reading copies the information from the stones starting from the first row north and then returns down row 2 reading toward the road (and basically reverses reading odd numbered rows one direction and even numbered from the other direction), each of the sixteen rows are started from the end closest to the road in this extraction.
The surnames in the index are grouped alphabetically and then individuals with the same last name are listed by row and lot sequence.

Obituary.
Mabel Viola Glick, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Glick departed this life January 22, 1907.
She was taken ill two weeks ago with a severe cold. Bronchial-
pneumonia developed and her death resulted. She was born March 16,
1898, age eight years, seven months, and six days.
Though but a little girl her last words should be
remembered by everyone. She said, "I want to go where Jesus is,"
and just a short time before her death she told her mamma, "I am
getting ready to go."
Mabel has joined that innumerable throng, who have
preceded her to that land of eternal bliss and happiness where
there is no heartache, trouble, pain, or death, and where sorrow or
sadness never come. She will be greatly missed by her parents,
classmates and friends, as she was liked by all who knew her.
There is left to mourn her death a father, mother, two
grand-mothers, one grand father and a large circle of friends.

Baby Drank Fly Poison And Is Dead.
Two Year-Old Baby of Mr. and Mr. Samuel Driver Died Last Night,
After Three Days Suffering.
The two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Driver,
living east of this city in the edge of Allen county, died last
night [Thursday] as the result of drinking poisonous water from one
of the tin receptacles known as the "Daisy Fly Killer". The box
had been left sitting where the baby could get hold of it and it
got the cork out in some manner and it is supposed drank a good
portion of the water. It had just been freshly filled and there
was a pretty good quantity of liquid in it. The poison was first
drank on Tuesday, when the baby became seriously sick, but on
Wednesday it appeared some better. It became worse yesterday again
and passed away last night. The attending physician said there was
no doubt in his mind but that the fly killer was responsible for
the baby's death and this case should prove a warning to others to
keep the poison out of the reach of small children. The poison is
in a long flat box, through which wicks protrude from round holes
in the top. A cork is placed in one hole through which water is
poured onto the poison in the box. This poisonous water follows
the wick and flies lighting on it die in a short time.

Mrs. Peter Fulk Died Yesterday
The Community Shocked
The Funeral Will be Held Sunday at Ten O'Clock from the Pleasant
Dale Church.
Mrs. Peter Fulk, one of the best known and most
respected women of Kirkland township, died Friday at her country
home at eleven-thirty o'clock after an illness dating back several
months, death resulting from a complication of diseases. Mrs.
Fulk, although ailing from some time past, had not been considered
in a dangerous condition until two weeks ago, when she took a
sudden turn for the worse, and was confined to her home and bed.
From that time on her decline was rapid, death relieving her from
all suffering at noon Friday. She was a member of the Pleasant
Dale church, and was a devoted worker in its behalf, and a
conscientious Christian. Her many kind acts and deeds of charity
will be sadly missed by those who came in close touch and contact
with her. The entire community was shocked to learn of her
untimely death, and her grief stricken husband has their heartfelt
sympathy. The funeral services will be held Sunday morning at the
Pleasant Dale church at ten o'clock, standard time, and interment
will be made in the Pleasant Dale cemetery. She leaves a husband,
four children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their
loss. The deceased was an aunt of W. E. Fulk of this city.

Drops Dead.
James Bell, a Former Bluffton Livery-man, Expires from Heart
Trouble in Adams County.
Mrs. Andrew Sprague received a telephone message this
morning that her father, James Bell, had dropped dead at half past
ten this morning at his farm a mile and a half south of
Peterson.
Very few people in Bluffton were not acquainted with
Mr. Bell, "Jim" Bell being the familiar appellation by which he was
known. For many years he was in the livery business in Tom
Souders' location, and as he was a jolly, good hearted gentleman
everybody like him. After selling his barn he moved about fifteen
years ago on a fine 160-acre farm in Adams county. He was breaking
a colt some two years ago and some part of his heart was ruptured
in the contest with the animal. He recovered and worked hard until
the day of his death, although he would take temporary attacks that
would incapacitate him for a few days. Mr. Bell was for years the
only republican councilman in Bluffton having been elected from the
first ward on one occasion. He was about sixty-five years old.
Among his children are John Bell, the barber; Mrs. A.M.
Sprague; Mrs. Naz Ruth, of Muncie, and Mrs. Johns White, of Ada,
Ohio. His second wife is still living. Mrs. Sprague drove to
Peterson this afternoon to learn the particulars of her father's
death and the time of funeral.

After having been a sufferer for some time from

o'clock at her home, three miles southwest of Peterson. Although
everything known to the medical science was done to allay the
rheumatism, it proved of no avail, and the trouble finally
developed into paricarditus, which was the direct cause of death.
Mrs. Henschen's maiden name was Florence Yaney. She was born in
Adams county July 8, 1833, being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Yaney. Her entire life was spent in this county and in early
womanhood she was united in marriage to Samuel Henschen. To this
union were born three children, Margaret, aged six years; Lucile,
aged five and Mildred, age eight months. Four brothers and sisters
also survive, they being Orval Yaney, residing in Oklahoma;
Augustus, George and William, residing in Adams county, and

Mrs. Rueben Pierce, of Curryville, died Wednesday from stomach
trouble and age, and her funeral occurred Thursday afternoon at two
o'clock. She was seventy-seven years old, and was the mother of
twelve children. It is a singular fact that none of them is dead,
in fact hers is the first death of the family, even her husband,
who is seventy-eight, surviving her. A reunion was held this
spring, at which all were present. Among the children in the city
are: Mrs. Mary J. Holmes and William Pierce.
Bert Tucker and Otis Holmes are grandchildren.
