Green Ham Crowder was born 1818² in Alabama. Research tells us that he arrived in Texas between 1836-1837, his mother was probably Jane (Burris) Crowder and James A. Crowder, William Crowder, Alphonso Crowder and Thomas M. Crowder his brothers.

Green Crowder was listed as a 2nd Sgt under W. B. Stout with the Red River County Rangers 1 Regiment, 4th Brigade, Texas Militia from 26 Nov 1838 to 26 May 1839.
Green H. Crowder was named as the grantor of an office bond filed in Lamar County, Texas on 13 May 1844. The grantee was Beddin Crisp, Jr. (Book: A-B, page: 162)

Green Ham Crowder married (1) Virginia C. Bromley 08 March 1849 in Hopkins County, Texas². Virginia was the daughter of Samuel Bromley. She born circa 1828 - 1830 in Alabama.

G. H. Crowder appears in the Index to Republic Claims on 8 November 1855. He is a witness for Elizabeth R. Crowder who was the widow of Alfonzo Crowder.

On this the 5 day of November A. D. 1855 before me, Z J Scott -an acting Justice of Peace in afore said county, personally apperaed Elizabeth R. Crowder, and being duly sworn says that she is the surving wife of Alfonzo Crowder deceased, who was a ---- in Captain ----- Company of Texas rangers, commanded by General ----- in the year 18-- for the protection of the frontiers of the Republic of Texas. That her said husband, as she is informed and verily believes, was in the frontier service at the time that Capt John B. Denton was killed and that he served several months and was honorably discharged. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining from the government of Texas the pay to which she is entitled by virtue of the services of her said husband as aforesaid, he having never recieved any pay for the same nor has she recieved any.

NOTE: Capt John B. Denton was killed 24 May 1841 Keechi Indian villages along Village Creek east of present-day Fort Worth. He was commissioned captain of a company in Brig. Gen. Edward H. Tarrant’s Fourth Brigade, Texas Militia. This would be the time period Alfonzo served.

G. H. Crowder was a member and an officer of Tarrant Masonic Lodge No. 91 from 1853 - 1858. He was listed as County Chief Justice in the 1860 Hopkins County census. He volunteered for Texas State Service on 27 May 1861 at Tarrant in Hopkins County, Texas. Green was 43 years old; listed as a 2nd Lieutenant in Lewis G. Harmon’s Company, Young’s Texas Regiment, Company "D", 11th Texas Cavalry. He resigned that commission on 15 May 1862.

Green H. Crowder was appointed sheriff of Hopkins County by Governor A. J. Hamilton on 7 August 1865 and served until 25 June 1866. (Texas County Sheriffs by Sammy Tise)

Green and Virginia Crowder lived in Precinct 2, Hopkins County, when the 1870 census was enumerated. Their postal address was White Oak. Green's occupation was a farmer in this record. Six children were living at home.

Virginia (Bromley) Crowder died 1871 in Hopkins County, Texas². We do not know where she is buried.

G. H. married (2) Caroline Shrode 22 September 1872 in Hopkins County, Texas (Vol 3, p 466). No further information on Caroline (Shrode) Crowder.
(I searched for the Shrode surname in Hopkins County. There was a Harriet Shrode living in the Bartlett household in 1870. She must have been a young widow and had 2 daughters, a 3 year old born in Missouri and an infant born 1870.)

G. H. Crowder married Mrs. Ann Turner 16 May 1877 in Hopkins County, Texas (Vol 4, p 252)

Green Ham Crowder was 59 years old when he married Mrs. Ann E. Turner, nee Traylor; the widow of Francis Ross Turner. Green and Ann were living separately in 1880. Ann Traylor Craft Turner Crowder lived in Precinct 2, Hopkins County. Green Crowder lived adjacent to his daughter, Dixie Crowder Duncan, in Precinct 3.

According to the late Maude Biard Smith², Green Ham Crowder died 1886; she did not indicate where he died. I believe he left Hopkins county sometime after 1880 to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Sardina and David Cullum, in Albany, Texas. William and Thomas were already living there when the 1880 census was taken.

The Albany Cemetery has a G. H. Crowder, buried in I00F, Block: 1, Lot: 5, who was born 08 May 1818 and died 27 February 1886. I believe this is the final resting place for our Green Ham Crowder but I was unable to verify the name of the plot owner. The only information the city has is what is inscribed on his tombstone. There are no additional markers in the plot.

According to Red River County Records (Book A-B), Greenham Crowder received a Second Class Headright grant. The Second Class Headright was issued to single men who arrived in the Republic after 2 March 1836 but prior to 1 October 1837. The 640 acres was granted with the stipulation of a three year residence. Second Class Headrights were also issued to William Crowder and and William M. Burris.

J. H Crowder recieved a First Class Headright grant in in the Old Red River Land District. The First Class Headright grants were issued to those who arrived in Texas prior to 2 March 1836. Heads of families recieved on league (4,428.4 acres) and one labor (177.1 acres) and single men recieved on third of a league (1,476.1 acres)

G. H. Crowder is listed as one of the original landowners in Cass County, Texas
I have seen several variants for the spelling of Green Ham Crowder's name in public records. He is also listed as: G. H. Crowder, G. Crowder and Greenham Crowder.
