John Miller McAfee was born March 1847 in York District, South Carolina (CSA Pension Application). There was a John M. McAfee born circa 1847 in the Lawson McAfee household in 1850 Talladega County, Alabama; John and Lawson McAfee appeared in the 1870 Hopkins County, Texas census; but the JP record of John's death has his father listed as John McAfee, mother: unknown.
John Miller McAfee was not quite 15 years old when he enlisted in the War Between the States; he enlisted in the spring of 1862 in Hopkins County. According to his Pension application he served as a private in Company "E", a Cavalry unit commanded first by B. Warren Stone, later by Isham Chisum. He was released from his duties at Hempstead in 1865. John married Sarah Jane Crowder 16 October 1865 in Hopkins County, Texas (Vol: 2, p: 294), daughter of Green Ham Crowder and Virginia Bromley. According to census records, she was born between 1849 - 1850 in Mississippi

Sarah Jane Crowder McAfee died 03 April 1890 in Hopkins County. We do not know where she is buried.
John Miller McAfee had pneumonia one week before dying 31 December 1922. His Death Record (Vol: 4, p: 9) names hIs physician as W. W. Long and the undertaker as Murray & Wester. According to this record, John was living in Route # 4, Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas when he died. He was buried 01 January 1923 in Forest Academy Cemetery in Hopkins County, Texas
