Blanchetown, History of the Bridge at

Question:        Please could you tell me when the bridge was built across the river at Blanchetown?  I read in a book that it was started in 1962 and was completed in 1964.  In 1997 a new bridge was built at Blanchetown, yet the old bridge at Paringa was built between 1923 and 1926.  It was opened Jan 31, 1927 and it is still being used by all the traffic from NSW and Vic. This goes to show that manual labour was the best, after all. (BB, Barmera)

Answer:        The SA premier, Sir Thomas Playford opened the bridge at Blanchetown onFriday, April 24 1964 after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works recommended its construction.  Work began on the site in March 1962 creating the third bridge across the Murray (the other two being at Murray Bridge and Paringa).

The front page of the Advertiser reported its opening on April 25, 1964 stating:

"A plaque unveiled by the Premier on the western approach to the bridge says: ' This structure, the first major prestressed concrete girder highway bridge built in SA, replaces the Blanchetown vehicular ferry crossing in use continuously since 1869".

Dancing the night away in Grenfell Street:

Question:        As a young man, when on holidays, I used to go to Adelaide, and spent much time at the dance halls.  I can't remember the name of one that was in Grenfell Street.  I'm hoping you can help me (LG, Pt Pirie)

Answer:        The State Library says the Grenfell Street dance hall you remember was probably  the Embassy Ballroom at 102a Grenfell St., on the north aide of the street, about where the entrance to the
Regent Arcade is now.

Built in 1871, the property was first used for offices, later becoming the Central Hall and then teh Queen's Hall.  An art deco facade was created in 1935 and the building then became the Embassy Ballroom.  In the 1950's it was converted into a picture theatre - the Plaza Theatre.  It became the Paris cinema briefly in 1965, then in 1966 it was demolished to make way for Regent
Arcade. Photographs of the Queen's Hall, the Embassy Ballroom and the Plaza Theatre can be viewed on the State Library Website http:// www.slsa.sa.gov.au

HACK, John Barton

Question:    Can you give me any further information on a John Hack? I have a copy of a Quaker publication in which it is said he emigrated with his family to Australia (from England) in 1836, was friend of the Governor, the first Government contractor and "laid out the streets of Adelaide".  I also have been told of a plaque in Little London,
Chichester, which says he was "the founder of Adelaide" (what about Colonel Light?).  Is it possible that the suburb of Hackney and Hackney Road were named after this man?.....KM (Hove)

Answer:     John Barton Hack was born at Chichester, England on July 18, 1805.  He contracted an illness which affected his lungs, and was told to seek a warmer climate, so he sailed for Launceston with his wife, six children
and his younger brother in 1836.  Hack spent one month buying livestock and equipment before heading for Holdfast Bay, whre he arrived in February, 1837.

Among his various ventures in SA Hack served on the committee for naming the streets of Adelaide - perhaps this is where your statement "he laid out the streets of Adelaide " came from.

Hack fared well initially but soon suffered some heavy losses.  He bought Blenkinsop"s whaling station at Encounter Bay in 1838, but that was taken from him during the 1841 depression.  He bought 4000 acres (1620 ha) near Mount Barker, called Echunga Springs, whre he made his home.  Hack planted some of the colony's first vine cuttings and
installed a windmill in his garden.  He spent 17000 pounds on Echunga Springs, making it a valuable showpiece.

He claimed he was the most active person in the colony but by the end of the 1841 depression his finances were depleted.

He returned to Adelaide in 1863 due to ill health, and became general accountant to the railways in 1870 and controller of railway accounts in 1879.

He resigned in 1883 and died on October 4, 1884 at his home at Semaphore.

Hack has been regarded as being too soft hearted to be a successful pioneer, having paid high wages, befriended Aborigines and ex-convicts (in those days frowned upon), and advocated temperance, among other
things.  He ws brought up a Quaker and gave land in Pennington Terrace for Friends' meeting house.

His son Theodore went on to become Mayor of Port Adelaide and Semaphore and to represent Gumeracha in parliament from 1890 to 1893.

"Mannings Place names of South Australia" shows that Hackney was not named for John Hack but for the Village of Hackney in London.  There is, however, one place in Adelaide named for the pioneer, and that is Hack Bridge, completed in 1850, about 1 km north of Mylor.

Lake Eyre, SA's geographical low point

Question:    Where is the lowest point in Australia? Having been to all the extremities in Aust. - Cape York (northern); Wilsons Promontory (southern) Byron Bay (eastern) Steep Point (western) Lambert's Memorial (geographical centre) and Mt. Kosciuszko (highest) - the last conquest is the lowest.  A spot inLake Eyre is shown on maps as being 15.2 meters below sea level. Is there a lower place?   (LK, Port Augusta)

Answer:    No, there is no lower place than the one you have identified. Australia's lowest geographical point is in fact in SA, at Lake Eyre, 15m. below sea level

Locomotive named after James McGuire:

Question:        I have reference to a train that was called "The James McGuire" or "The Sir James McGuire".  Is this a fact, and who was this gentleman? Was he the father of the well known Paul McGuire, author and I think one-time
Aust. Ambassador to Rome? (MB, Hampstead Gardens)

Answer:        This query took some tracking down, and the help of the Port Dock Station Museum and the Australian Railway Historical Society (SA Divn.) must be gratefully acknowledged.

Steam locomotive No. 500 entered service on June 6, 1927, and was named James McGuire on September 15, 1928.  According to the Aust. Railway Historical Society, this was one of the first large power locomotives introduced by the then railways commissioner, William A Webb, to replace the much smaller locomotives used up until then to haul heavy trains over the Adelaide Hills.  The 500 class locomotives weighed 222 tonnes, were 26 m. long had a boiler pressure of 200psi and carried 11 tonnes of coal and 7000 gallons (31000 litres) of water. The James McGuire locomotive cost $17978.00 and was condemned in May, 1963.

Ron Fluck, of the Port Dock Station Museum, provided the following information from the book W A Webb, by Reece Jennings (WA Webb was the State's Chief Railways Commissioner 1922-1927 then Railways Commissioner 1927-1930)

James McGuire was born in 1856 in North Adelaide, his father having come to Adelaide in the early 1850s. He began work with the SA Railways at Port Adelaide in 1870 was the station master at Crystal Brook in 1876 and Port Pirie in 1877. He was appointed superintendent in the South-East in 1888 and then of the narrow gauge Western Division in
1889. In 1895 he was in charge of the Northern system of SAR at Petersburg, now Peterborough.  McGuire became superintendent of station services at Adelaide in 1910, was general traffic manager from 1915-1916, then railways commissioner from 1916 - 1927.  He died at Largs Bay in June 1927. Steam locomotive No. 500 was named in his honour 15 months after his death. While James had a son named Paul, the State Library was unable to confirm  if it was the same Paul McGuire to whom you refer.

Photographic Memories

Question:    I have been interested in family history for some time and have recently come across several old studio photographs which do not show the names of the people or the dates they were taken.  I am fairly certain who
some of them are, but to confirm this I was wondering if you could tell me the
years in which these photographic studios were in business  -
        * C J Piper, 88 Hindley Street, Adelaide
        * Joseph Good, 128 Rundle Street, Adelaide (opposite McRostie's)
        * H W Pell, Kadina

I also have a painting framed by "Lear and Smith, late K Cameron, Picture Framers and Mount Cutters, Leigh Street, Adelaide" and would like to know the period in which they were in business.....PF (Geelong)

Answer:  This was referred to the State Library, whose researcher  advises C J PIPER was in business from 1917 to 1950, then in 1955 as PELLS

Photographic Studios.  The researcher went through Post Office Directories for every five years from 1880 to 1955, and could not find any trace of Joseph GOOD - however, he could have been in business for one to four years during that  period.  Lear and Smith picture framers was still Cameron in 1905, then from 1910 to 1917 was known as Lear and Smith, but the business was not in the 1925 directory.

That should give you an indication about who is in your pictures, but to obtain a more precise business time line, you can look through the Post Office Directories at the State Library

NB: The Post Office Directories were produced until 1971/2 - I believe that all years are in the State Library, some are held at SAGHS.

Retrieving Records of War Service:

Question:        I would like to get the war records of two of my uncles who were killed in France during WW1.  Can you tell me where to apply for them?  Also, is there a web address?  -  M.L. (South Plympton).

Answer:        You do not specify for which country your uncles fought in the war.  Assuming they fought for Australia, you can contact the National Archives of Australia, which holds the service records of servicemen and women of WW1  According to the website of the archives, the records held relate primarily to members of the First Austraian Imperial Force but also include records of members of the Australian Flying Corps, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train and Australian Army Nursing Service, as well as the Depot or Home records for personnel who served within Australia during the war.   A total of 420,000 WW1 service records  are held by the National Archives.

These records may be accessed in three ways - by buying a photocopy of the original, by requesting a digital copy be
placed on the National Archives Record Search database, or by viewing the original record in the National Archives Reading Room in Canberra.  For more information contact the archives by email: ref@naa.gov.au  -  or by post at National Archives of Australia, PO Box 7425, Canberra Mail Centre, ACT 2610.

Shirley

Question:    While visiting the North Road Cemetery at Nailsworth, I noticed a headstone with several names, and the location where they had died was at a place called SHIRLEY - are you able to find where this town is located?  (DMH, Lockleys)

Answer:    A search at www.placenames.sa.gov.au found that apart from various Shirley streets, there were two possible locations for Shirley.  One was a homestead called Shirley, which was located in the hundred of Mt. Muirhead in the Wattle Range Council.

The other was Shirley Well in the Pitjantjatjara homelands. However, it seems unlikely that someone would transport a body from those remote locations to Nailsworth for burial. So the question was referred to the State Library, which came up with one likely possibility, although it is stressed this is not a certainty.  In 1923 a land division was advertised. Comprising 32 allotments, it was named Shirley Gardens and was located opposite the Payneham Bowling Green. The suburb has since been absorbed into Payneham.  Because this area is close to Nailsworth, it is possible this is the Shirley you saw on the headstone.

Wartime deeds of the 12th Infantry Battalion

Question:        My great uncle served in the 12th Infantry Battalion and was killed during World War I.  I was wondering whether you could tell me a brief history of the battalion and the actions  it was involved in during the Great War (DR, Hallett Cove)

Answer:        The State Library advises that the 12th Battalion was half made up of men from Tasmania, with the rest coming from SA and WA. They embarked at Hobart on October 20, 1914, under the leadership of Colonel L F Clarke, one of the first officers to be killed in the landing at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.  The 12th Batt. also saw fierce action in France, including battles at Pozieres and near Margaret Farm

A member of the 12th, Erle Joseph, was Tasmania's last surviving Anzac when he died in Hobart on July 1, 1991 at the age of 101.

Joseph was part of the 3rd Brigade of the 12th Inf. Battalion, which landed in Gallipoli as reinforcements, and he wrote about his experiences in his books:  The Man who Never Came Back; The Hard Road Back; The Queen of the Mountains: and Next Door. These include plenty of details about the 12th Infantry Division.

WHYALLA, History of

Question:    I wish to query a statement in the Advertiser that Whyalla was 100 years of age on March 31, 2001.  Could we have more facts and figures?  -  S.M. (St. Peters)

Answer:    Whyalla had its beginnings in a small township called Hummock Hill in 1901 - the name "Whyalla" was not commissioned until 1914.  The book '60 Years of Whyalla: Diamond Jubilee 1914 - 1974' states that in January 1901, the paddle steamer Cadell came from Port Pirie with 20 men, 16 horses and several drays to begin building a tramway from Hummock Hill to Iron Knob.  Residential and building blocks were surveyed at Iron Knob and 10 x 1 acre blocks were offered on Hummock Hill as miscellaneous leases.  At the end of the year, the community consisted of less than 50 people.  By 1902, 21 families were in residence at Hummock Hill.

But it wasn't until April 9, 1914 tht the township of Whyalla was declared.  In the proclamation in the South Australian
Government Gazette of April 16, 1914, Sir Samuel James Way declares the town of Whyalla.  The full definition of Whyalla's territory can be found in that edition of the gazette.  Because of the communities
established in 1901 it could then be said that Whyalla itself began in 1901 - hence the centenary this year - even if the township was not declared until 1914
