Adam Tinling.  Married Esther Rutherfuird on 18 Nov 1670 in Edinburgh [SCR].  She was the daughter of John Rutherfurd, a tailor [Anc.].  They were living in Edinburgh in Nov 1671 [SCR]. Adam Tinling was apparently a burgess of Edinburgh, by right of his wife as the daughter of John Rutherfurd, “bedell” of the College Kirk [Anc.].  Children: Margaret. [Possibly the same as Adam Tinling who married Hester ______.]

Adam Grey Tinline.  Born 17 Dec 1894, registered 1st quarter 1895 in Holborn District (Middlesex), son of John Hardie and Janet (Hope) Tinline [CR, cen., SS, EI].  He immigrated to the United States in 1911 at age 16, arriving in New York on 5 Jun 1911, at which time he was a grocer assistant [cen., EI].  He became a U.S. citizen in 1918 [EI].  He was living with his mother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1920, was unmarried and working as a machinist [cen.].  He arrived in New York again on 8 Jul 1920 [EI].  He married Emma Frances Simon in c. 1926 [cen.].  She was born 27 Jun 1902 in Pennsylvania, daughter of Howard S. and Emma L. Simon [SS, cen.].  In 1930 they were living with her parents in Philadelphia and he was working as a machinist in a steel mill [cen.].  He died in Nov 1973 in Frankford or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [SS].  She lived at one time in Dacus, Texas [SS, AB].  She died 9 Feb 1998 in Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Texas [SS, TR].  Children: Clarkson.

Agnes Tinlin.  Born 1834 (1836?) in Linton, Roxburghshire, daughter of John and Janet (Hume) Tinlin [JT, cen.].  In 1841 she was living with her father in Linton Bankhead, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1851 she was living with her father in Linton Bankhead working as a house servant [cen.].  In 1857 and 1859 she was living in Linton [IGI].  In 1861 she was living with her father in Linton Bankhead, was unmarried, and was working as a housekeeper [cen.].  She married Robert Rutherford on 9 Oct 1868 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire [JT, IGI].  He was born c. 1841 in Butterlaw, Berwickshire [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Hedworth Monkton & Jarrow, Durham, and he was working as a joiner [cen.].  In 1891 they were living at 29 Ann Court in the same place, and he was working as a ship joiner [cen. (she is called Agnes Oliver Rutherford)].  Children (before marriage): Janet (Tinlin), Janet Robson (Tinlin).

[cen.].  She married John Pow on 25 Apr 1862 at the Manse in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire [cert.].  He was born c. 1839, son of Gavin and Elizabeth (Dixon) Pow, and was living in Blackly, Hobkirk at the time of his marriage, working as a blacksmith [cert.].  She was living in Wauchope, Hobkirk at the time of her marriage, working as a domestic servant [cert.].

Albert William Tinling.  Born 28 Oct 1796 in Grenada, son of John and Elizabeth (Robinson) Tinling [reg. as William only].  An Ensign in the 104th Regiment of Foot from 31 Dec 1812 [AL].  Became a Lieutenant on 9 Mar 1815 [AL].  He was placed on the English half pay 24 May 1817 [AL].  He transferred to the 57th “West Middlesex” Regiment on 30 Sep 1819 [AL].  He was still listed in the Army List in 1821.  [May be the William Tinling of Raby Park, Jamaica (who had a grandson named Albert)].

 


Alexander Tinlin.  Born c. 1814 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, son of Robert and Agnes (Simpson) Tinlin [cen., death cert.].   He married Mary Simpson on 12 Apr 1845 in Earlston, Berwickshire [cert.,CT].  She was born 22 Jul or 24 Aug 1818 in Johnston by Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, daughter of John and Mary (Cowan) Simpson [cen., her death cert., IGI lists both dates].  Living in Earlston, Berwick in May 1846, Jan 1848, Sep 1850, Apr 1854, Sep 1857, Jan 1860 [SCR, cen., IGI].  In 1851 they were living in Earlston, and he was working as a grocer and spirit dealer [cen.].  He died 19 Mar 1879 in Earlston, age 65, at which time he had been working as a farmer [cert.].  In 1881 she was listed as a widow [cen.].  In 1891 she was living in Earlston District [cen.].  She died 8 Jul 1894 in Earlston, age 74 [cert.].  Children: John, Agnes, Janet, Mary Cowan, Euphemia, Jane.

 

Alexander Tinling.  Born c. 1816 in Scotland [cen.].  He married Sarah Ann Whitehouse on 21 Nov 1836 in Saint Leonard’s, Shoreditch, London [reg.].  At the time, they were both living in Saint Leonard’s Parish [reg.].  She was born 22 Apr 1815 and chr. 28 Apr 1815 at St. Mary, Marylebone, London, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Whitehouse [IGI, cen., marr. reg.].  They were living at No. 68, Chapel Street, Whitechapel, London in Nov 1840, and he was working as a gun maker [son’s birth cert.].  In 1841 they were living in Chambers Street, Whitechapel, and he was working as a junior gun maker [cen.].  He died 3rd quarter 1844 in St. Pancras District (Middlesex) [CR].  She was living in Finsbury, London in Sep 1847 [IGI].  She died 15 Jan 1884 in Islington District (Middlesex), age 69, bur. Abney Park Cemetery, London [CR, DCH].  Children: [Alexander ?], Thomas, John Alexander.  [Possibly brother of Andrew Tinling, gun maker, and thus son of Thomas Tinling?].  [Probably related to Elizabeth Tinling, died in 1840 in Whitechapel].

(birth and baptism dates left blank in register, appears to be in 1831)].  In 1841 he was living with his parents in Bowden [cen.]. In 1851 he was living in Kittyfield, Melrose, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].   He and his future wife had a daughter before they were married, born in Oct 1859 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire [IGI].  He married Agnes Scott on 27 Jan 1860 at “Mount Berger” (?), Yarrow Parish, Selkirkshire [cen., cert., CT].  She was born 24 Feb 1836 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, daughter of Robert and Isabel (Dalgliesh) Scott [cen., cert., IGI].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Chesterbale and she was living in Mount Berger; he worked as a plowman [cert., CT].  In 1861 they were living in Linton Parkhead, Ashkirk, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a ploughman [cen.].  They were living in Ashkirk in Apr 1861, Jun 1863, in Selkirk, Selkirkshire in Feb 1865, and in Yarrow, Selkirkshire in Sep 1867, when he worked as a labourer [IGI, cen., son’s death cert.].   They were living in Ettrick, Selkirkshire c. 1869, in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire c. 1871, 1874 and 1875, and in Selkirk, Selkirkshire in Oct 1876 and c. Alexander Tinlin.  Born Feb 1842 in Canada, son of Brook and Elizabeth (Betran) Tinlin [calc. from tombstone would be 4 Jan 1839, cen., AS, DB].  He was a farmer [cen.].   He immigrated to the U.S. in 1862 [cen.].  He enlisted in the Union Army and served in Co. Andrew Tinlin(e)(g).  Born c. 1793 in Stichill Parish, Roxburghshire, son of Thomas Tinlin, a labourer [marr. cert., BSD].  He was a labourer by trade [BSD].  Attested to the service on 14 Aug 1815 at Kelso, Roxburghshire, age 22 [BSD].  He was then 5'11" tall, had a fair complexion, red hair and blue eyes [BSD].   He had a natural son by Margaret Stevenson in c. 1819-20 in Kelso [cen., son’s marriage cert.].  She was born c. 1803 in Lessudden, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire [cen.].  At first he was a Trooper (Private), then he was promoted to Corporal of Horse on 10 Apr 1833 [BSD].  He was in the 1st Regiment, Life Guards [BSD].  He left the service on 15 Feb 1840 at age 46 1/2 because of a diseased testicle and impaired general health contracted in the service.  [BSD]  “His conduct has been that of a good, efficient and trustworthy soldier” [BSD].  Probably the Andrew Tinlin who was a witness at the marriage of Margaret Tinlin and Thomas Bell in 1834 in Kelso [reg.].  He married 1st Mary Telfer on 15 Nov 1818 in Roberton, Selkirkshire [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Roberton [reg.].  She died in 4th quarter 1838 in Saint Pancras District (Middlesex) [CR].   In 1841 he was living in Dinton, Wiltshire and was an Army Pensioner [cen.].  He married 2nd Mary Ann Baker on 23 Aug 1841 in Dinton, Wiltshire [cert.].  She was born c. 1803-4 in Dinton, the daughter of John Baker, a blacksmith [cert., calc., not in IGI].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Dinton, and he was working as a servant (?) Andrew Tinling.  Born c. 1816-7 in Carham Parish, Berwickshire, son of Thomas Tinling [BSD, marr. cert.].  A labourer by trade [BSD].  Attested to the 1st Regiment of Life Guards at London on 6 Jan 1837 at age 19 6/12 [BSD].  At the time he was 33 6/12 years old, 6'0" tall, had brown or dark brown hair, blue eyes, no distinctive marks, and a fair complexion [BSD – either I took down the information incorrectly, or the papers for two different people were mixed up].  He was not married at the time he entered the service [BSD].  He was enlisted by Corporal Tinlin [BSD].  He had two good conduct badges awarded to him [BSD].  He left the service on 16 Jan 1837 because of disability due to an “attack of paraplegia” [BSD].   He married 1st Sarah Appleby on 9 Oct 1842 at the Registrar’s Office, Westminster, Middlesex [cert.].  At the time, they were living at 62 York St., and he was working as a gun maker [cert.].  She was born c. 1821, daughter of John Appleby [marr. cert.].  He married 2nd Sarah Appleby on 4 Aug 1844 at the Registrar’s Office, St. Pancras, London [cert.].  She was the daughter of James Appleby, a straw hat maker, and was probably the cousin of his first wife [cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at the Regent’s Park Barracks, a Private in the 1st Life Guards, and she was living at 48 Edward Street, Regent’s Park, working as a millener [cert.]. They immigrated to Victoria, Australia on the ship Augusta Schneider in Aug 1852 [Internet – says he was age 45, thus born c. 1807, but her age is correct].  He enrolled on 25 Aug 1863 at Ballarat (Australia) in the 1st Regiment, Waikato Militia, at which time he was termed a soldier [Internet].  Children by second wife: Andrew Alexander Cunningham, Jean, Andrew John, John Andrew, Alexandrina Sara, Andrew William.

Andrew Tinlin.  Born c. 1833 in Kelso or Linton, Roxburghshire, son of John and Janet (Hume) Tinlin [JT, cen.].  In 1841 he was living with his father in Linton Bankhead, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1851 he was living in Pleasants, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, was unmarried and was working as an apprentice blacksmith [cen.].  In 1857 he was a blacksmith in Kelso and had a natural child by Margaret Aitkin [son’s birth cert.].  He married Isabella White on 6 Jan 1862 at the Agriculture Hotel, 116 Baker Street, Stirling, Stirlingshire [cert., AXT].  She was born in 1841 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, daughter of Benjamin and Janet (Sout) Whyte [cen., marr. cert., AXT].  At the time of their marriage, he was a journeyman blacksmith, and they were both living in Doune, Kilmadock [cert.].  In 1868-69 they were living in Doune, Perthshire [Duncan & Jamieson’s Directory via AXT].  In 1881 they were living in Kilmadock and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.].  In 1901 they were living in Kilmadock and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.].  He died in 1908 in Kilmadock District, age 74 [SCVL].  She died 5 Dec 1917 in Kilmadock District, age 78 [JT, SCVL].  Children by Margaret Aitkin: John.  Children by Isabella White: John, Janet, Agnes Hume, Isabella Whyte, Benjamin White, Alison, Mary.

Land, Newarthill, Holytown, Glasgow and he was working as a coalminer [son’s birth cert.].  He emigrated to the U.S. in May 1904, she followed in Oct 1904 [JY].  They lived at first in Illinois, then in Iowa [JY].  In 1930 they were living in Chicago, Illinois, and he was retired [cen.]. Annie Tinlin.  Born in Oct 1882 in Ohio, daughter of John J. and Rebecca Tinlin [cen.].  In 1900 she was living with her parents in Cleveland, Ohio [cen.].  She was not listed with her mother in Cleveland in 1910 [cen.].

 

Annie Tinlin.  Born in 1885 in St. Andrew, Edinburgh District, daughter of George and Mary (Hislop) Tinlin [cen., SCVL].  In 1891 she was living with her parents in St. Andrew District, Edinburgh [cen.].  In 1901 she was living with her parents in St. Cuthbert, George Square, Edinburgh and was working as a railway bookstall assistant [cen.]. She married Walter Scott Clement on 20 Sep 1922 at 11 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh [cert.].  He was born c. 1885, son of James and Isabella (Gibb) Clement [marr. cert.].  At the time of their marriage, he was working as an electrical engineer and living at 9 Brook Road, Walton Park, Liverpool, and she was working as a booksellers assistnat, living at 14 West Savile Terrace, Edinburgh [cert.].

Annie Tinlin.  Born 12 Jan 1902 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, daughter of William and Martha (Clark) Tinlin [CR, RH].  She moved to South London in c. 1929 and worked as a domestic servant [RH].  She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Army at the outbreak of war in September 1939 [RH].  She was promoted to full corporal and received the general war medal and the 1939-45 service medal [RH].  In the mid-1960’s she moved to Swindon, Wiltshire [RH].  She died unmarried in 3rd quarter 1980 in Swindon [RH, CR].

William St. Clair of the 25th Regiment of Foot (Royal Borderers) in 1773 on Minorca [Burke's LG, O'Byrne].  He was born in 1746, son of Capt. William St. Clair, himself son of the 10th Lord Sinclair [GW (who doubts the Lord Sinclair connection), Burke's LG].  In 1786 they lived at Chichester, Sussex [O’Byrne].  Their home was at Skedoway, Fife and in Edinburgh [MI, Blackwood’s Magazine]. He died 23 Feb 1830 at the home of his son in the Mall, Clifton [Burke's LG, Blackwood’s Magazine, Jun 1830, page 966].  She died 29 Nov 1844 at the home of her son, Staverton Court, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and was bur. at Holy Trinity, Cheltenham [MI, London Times, 4 Dec 1844, page 7].  An Augusta St. Clair, daughter of the late William St. Clair, Esq. of Shedoway, Fife, and sister of the late Major-General St. Clair, died 4 Feb 1848 in London [The Patrician, 1848, pg. 307].

Stanley Bullock in 1840 in St. Mary’s, Southampton [NH, GW].  He was born c. 1792 and was in the Madras Cavalry [GW].  He died in 1865 [NH].  She had children by both husbands and died 5 Jun 1871 at 3, Moira Place, Southampton [NH, London Times, 9 Jun 1871, pg. 1].
