Catherine Mary Tinling.  Born 8 May 1836 in North Dumfries, Waterloo Co., Ontario, daughter of John and Margaret (Wright) Tinling [JH, cen., marr. reg.].  In 1851 she was living with her parents in Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario [cen.].  In 1881 she was living in North Dumfries and was working as a schoolteacher [cen.].  She married Robert Guthrie on 20 May 1886 in Blenheim, Oxford Co., Ontario [reg. trans.].  He was born c. 1824 in Scotland, son of David and Mary (Wyllie) Guthrie [reg. trans.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Blenheim, a widower, working as a farmer, and she was living in North Dumfries [reg. trans.].  There was a Katerine Guthrie, born 17 Mar 1825 in Scotland (came to Canada in 1842), widow, living in North Dumfries in 1901, but no others [cen.].

 

Catherine Mary Tinling.  Born 18 Aug 1877 in Blairsburg (or Ossian), Hamilton Co., Iowa, daughter of Robert and Helen (Hall) Tinling [JH, cen., SS, EI].  In 1880 she was living with her parents in Military Twp., Winnesheik Co., Iowa [cen.].  Not listed in the index to the 1900 New York census.  In 1910 she was living with her sister Margaret in Brooklyn, New York, was single, and was working as a store accountant [cen.].  In 1920 she was living in Brooklyn, New York and was unmarried [cen.].  In Jul 1923 she was living at 87 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, New York [EI].  In 1930 she was living in Brooklyn, New York, was single, and was working at a ladies apparell company [cen.].  She died in Oct 1964, benefits sent to District of Columbia [SS].

She was born c. 1804 in Macduff, Banffshire [cen.].  They were living in Liverpool, Lancashire in Oct 1837, Oct 1839, Apr 1841, Oct 1842 [IGI, reg.].  They were living in West Derby, Lancashire in 1851 and he was the editor of the Liverpool Courier [FHO (cen.)].  In 1871 they were living in West Derby and he was working as a newspaper proprietor [cen.].  She died 1st quarter 1876 in West Derby District (Lancashire), age 72 [CR].  He was living in Litherland, Lancashire in 1881, a widower and a newspaper proprietor [cen.].  In 1891 he was living in Litherland and was a retired publisher [cen.].  He was the founder of C. Tinling and Co., Ltd. [possibly C.T. Tinling and Co.], the proprietors, printers, and publishers of the “Daily Courier”, and the “Evening Express”, Liverpool newspapers [London Times, 1 Jun 1927].  At the time of his death, his residence was Seaforth, Lancaster [London Times, 7 Sep 1900, pg. 7].  He died 29 Jun 1900 at Beechwood Boarding House, Harrogate, Yorkshire, age 89 [cert.].  Children: Ann(e) Forbes, Martha, James Forbes Bissett, Christian Williamson.

 

Charles Tinling.  Born 10 Nov 1816, and chr. 10 Dec 1816 in Christ Church, Barbados, son of Isaac John and Elizabeth Bynoe (Evelyn) Tinling [reg.].   He married 1st ______ Michall [NH].  He married 2nd Mary Woodley Dallas on 11 Oct 1860 in St. Michael, Barbados [IGI].  She was born c. 1838 in Barbados and had previously been married to ______ Ferrie [cen., NH].  Living in Christ Church, Barbados in Jan 1864, Feb 1866, Feb 1868, Dec 1869, Dec 1871, Aug 1874 [IGI].  He was bur. in St. Michael, Barbados in 1875 [reg.].  She was living in Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario in 1881, a widow [cen.].  She died 20 Sep 1882 in Hamilton, Ontario [ODR].  They (she?) were bur. in the Church of the Ascension Cemetery, Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario [OCFA].  Children: Charles Widdrington, Henry John, Hugh Lyle, Ada Dallas, Mary Woodley, Kate Burnaby.

In 1851 he was living in Gateshaw, Morebattle, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as a coachman [cen.].  He married Janet Trotter on 12 Dec 1856 in Gateshaw, Morebattle [cert.].  At the time, they were both living in Gateshaw, he was working as a coachman and she as a dressmaker [cert.].  She was born c. 1828 in Eccles, Berwickshire, daughter of William and Alison (Allan) Trotter [cert., cen.].  In 1861 they were living in Morebattle and he was working as a coachman and gamekeeper [cen. as Charles Tinling].  In 1871 they were living in Branxholm Park, Hawick, and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  In 1881 they were living in Roberton, Selkirkshire and he was working as a coachman [cen.].  In 1891 they were living in Peebles District [cen.].  He died 28 Aug 1897 at 18 Younger Street, Peebles, Peebleshire, age 78 [JR, cert.].  In 1901 she was living in Peebles [cen.].  She died in 1907 in Peebles District, age 84 [SCVL].

Charles Tinlin.  Born 2 Mar 1869 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, son of James and Catherine (Scott) Tinlin [cen., CA].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Kelso [cen.].  He was living with his parents in All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1881 [cen.].   In 1891 he was living with his parents in Byker, Newcastle, working as a commercial clerk [cen.].  He married Marguerite Elizabeth Bright in 1st quarter 1893 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne [CR, cen.].  She was born c. 1870 in England [cen.].  In 1898 they were living at 116 Cardigan Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he was working as a commercial traveller [dir.].  In 1901 they were living in Heaton District, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and he was working as a commercial traveller [cen.].  He immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 11 Nov 1903, with his destination being Springfield, Ohio [EI under Finlin].  She immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 30 Sep 1904 on the ship Carpathia [EI].  He applied for citizenship in Sangamon County [Anc.].  They were living in Riverton, Sangamon Co. in 1910, and he was working as a traveling salesman [cen.].  She was living in Springfield, Illinois in 1920, listed as married, although her husband was not living with her [cen.].  Have not located him on 1920 census index.  He died in the 1920’s [cen.].  She was living in Springfield, Illinois in 1930 and was a widow [cen.].  She died 28 Apr 1943 in Springfield [VR].  Children: Norman, May, Jennie Rutherford, plus four others died as infants.

Charles Ashley Stubbs Tinling, Rear Admiral.  Born in 1765 in Chichester, Sussex, son of Isaac John and Johanne (Stubbs) Tinling [Hodgson, O’Byrne, Phipps, NH, GW]. Entered the Navy in 1778 on the Porcupine and was midshipman during it’s “gallant action” with two Spanish frigates in 1780 [Times obit].  He commanded a gunboat and served with the Marines on shore at the “memorable siege of Gibraltar” [Times obit].  Commissioned a Lieutenant on 27 Jul 1793 [”The Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy”].  In 1794 he was a lieutenant in the Orion in Lord Howe’s action; and in the Queen in Lord Bridport’s action in 1795 [Times Obit].  Married 1st Frances “Fanny” Phipps on 8 Dec 1797 at St. Sidwell’s, Exeter, Devonshire [transcript of reg.].  She was born 8 Jan 1773 at Brampton, near Huntingdon, daughter of Constantine and Elizabeth (Tierney) Phipps [Phipps].  He was a captain of the sloop “Scorpion” in the North Sea 1797-1800 [VCH Sussex, v. ii, pg. 167].  Commissioned a Commander on 7 Sep 1798 [Commissioned...].  Commissioned a Captain on 14 Feb 1801 [Commissioned...].  Actively employed in the North Sea and in the West Indies in 1801, including the expedition to the Helder [Times obit].  They were living in Cleve Dale, Gloucestershire in Dec 1802 [London Times, 18 Dec 1802, pg. 3].  His first wife Fanny died 30 Jun 1803 and was bur. 7 Jul 1803 in the catacombs of All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].  He married 2nd Sarah Bullock on 12 Jan 1805 in South Weald, Essex [reg.].  She was the daughter of William Bullock, Esq., of Ongar, and Shelley, Essex [his will].  On 9 Feb 1810 he was at Southwold, Suffolk and was a Captain [”Hist. Manuscripts Comm.: Records of Southwold, Suffolk” pg. 117].  He was made a Rear Admiral 12 Jul 1830 and was Rear Admiral of the Red [”Book of Dignities”].  In 1833 he was listed as a rear-admiral on retired half-pay [”Sea Officers 1833"].  He “commanded the Dictator of 64 guns in the English Channel [Times obit]. He had a home in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.  He died 27 Nov 1840 in Southampton District (Hampshire), age 76, and was bur. in the catacombs of All Saints’ Church, Southampton [London Times, 2 Dec 1840, pg. 4, CR, Gentleman’s Magazine Feb 1841 pg. 205, GW].  His second wife died 17 Feb 1848 at Exeter, Devonshire in the home of her son Edward, and was bur. at St. Leonard’s, Exeter [London Times, 21 Feb 1848, sup. pg. 9, CR, GW].  Children by Frances Phipps: Charles Stubbs, Adelaide, James Amyatt.  Children by Sarah Bullock: Francis Bullock, George, Maria, Henry, Charlotte Phipps, child, Edward Douglas.

Charles Burnaby Tinling, Lt.  Born 30 Mar 1893 in Hamilton, Ontario, son of Charles Widdrington and Louisa Brett Georgina (Ryall) Tinling of 177 Edgehill Road, Montreal [CWGC, OBR, KB].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Hamilton [cen.].  He earned a B.A. from McGill University, and passed with honors his third year in medicine [CWGC].  He was a sergeant-major of No. 3 Canadian Hospital for nearly two years, and then took his commission in the 42nd Royal Highlanders of Canada, where he became a lieutenant [CWGC].  He earned dispatches during World War I [CWGC].  He died 15 Apr 1917, age 24, bur. Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France [CWGC].  There is also a burial (marker?) listed for him in Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario [OCFA].

Tinling - Internet].  According to his testimony, she died between 1892 and 1896 in Peru [Times].  He married 2nd (bigamously) Clara Anne (Gravely) Burfield, a widow with three children, on 17 Sep 1890 at St. Peter’s Parish Church, Brighton, Sussex [CR as Charles Evelyn, Times].  She was chr. 29 Jul 1855 in Bolney, Sussex, daughter of William Henry and Owena (Street) Gravely and had been previously married to James Moulton Burfield, an artist [cen., IGI].  Cannot locate on 1891 census (but they were in the U.S. for part of that year) [Times].  In 1901 she was living in Chelsworth, Suffolk under the name Burfield [cen.].  In 1893 he assumed the name Charles Clarence Widdrington Tinling-Taylor [Times].  He married 3rd (bigamously) Elizabeth Inez Weizel on 7 Jul 1896 at St. George’s Church, Bloomsbury, London [Times, CR under Tinting-Taylor].  He died 1st quarter 1901 in Strand District (London), age 47 [CR].  He had a child by his first wife, which he claimed also died in Peru (but she had no child living with her in 1880) [Times].

Berkeley’s Bancroft Library [have copy].  Living in Montana in Aug 1890 [cen.].  In 1890 and 1891 he was listed in the St. Paul, Minnesota city directory as a traveling agent with the “CStPM&O” railway in St. Paul and Helena, Montana [dir.].  Living in Minnesota in Feb 1892 [cen.].  In 1900 they were living in Washburn, Bayfield Co., Wisconsin, and he was working as a railroad superintendant [cen.].  Cannot locate in 1910 census index.  In Jan 1920 they were living at 6029 Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, Illinois [cen.].  He was the bureau manager for a steam railroad [cen.]. In 1930 they were living in Chicago and he was working as a department superintendent for the railroad [cen.].  He died 11 May 1943 in Riverside, Cook Co., Illinois [IR].  She died 9 Mar 1957 in Riverside, Illinois [JH].  Children: Jean Milton, Gladys Helen, John Creton, Theodore Robert, Virginia.

 

Charles Hugh Lyle Tinling, Major.  Born 29 Aug 1798 in Grenada, son of John and Elizabeth (Robinson) Tinling [reg.].  Was an Ensign in the 13th “1st Somersetshire” Regiment of Foot from 20 Nov 1817 [AL].  In Jun 1820 he was quartered with his troops in Glasgow and was assaulted during a public riot [Edinburgh Advertiser, 13 Oct 1820].  He was still listed in the Army List in 1821.  Became a Lieutenant on 3 May 1821 [List].  He was third in rank among Lieutenants in the 13th (or 1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot in 1821 [List].  He married Frances Wentworth Tinling (see also under her name) on 18 Feb 1835 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire [London Times, 24 Feb 1835, pg. 6].  At the time of their marriage, he was a Captain in the 3rd Regiment [London Times].  They were living in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in May 1847 [SCR].  He was in the 74th Highlanders [Times obit.].  In 1851, 1855, and 1856 they were living at No. 8, Alfred Street, Bath, Somerset [cen. index, his will, dir.].  She could be the “Mrs. Tinling” living at 18 Chapel St., Grosvenor Square, London in 1852 [dir.].  He died on 6 Mar 1864 at his residence, Hamilton Villa, Southsea, Hampshire [CR, London Times, 10 Mar 1864, pg. 1, his probate].  Children: Mary Ann, Charles Pattison, William Harkness, John Isaac, Augusta Amelia Lys., George Vaughan, Edward Brace.
