George Tinling.  Chr. 17 Mar 1725 in Hexham Parish, Northumberland, son of John Tinling [IGI].  He was living in Hexham Parish, Northumberland in Jan 1752 and was single [BT].  He was a cordwainer [BT].  He married Isable Horn on 20 Jul 1752 in Bishopwearmouth Parish, Durham [IGI].  They were living in Hexham in May 1753, in Bishopwearmouth in Jun 1756 and in Sunderland Parish, Durham in Apr 1759, Jun 1761, Jul 1764 [IGI (her name sometimes given as Elizabeth)].  Children by an unknown woman: Ann.  Children by Isable or Elizabeth Horn: Mary, Jane, Eleanor, George, Isabella.

George Tinling, Maj.  Probably born in Minorca, son of Isaac John and Johanne (Stubbs) Tinling [GW, O’Byrne, NH].  Entered the 57th “West Middlesex” Regiment as an Ensign on 14 Jul 1780 [AL].  He served in America from 1783-91 [GW].  Became a Lieutenant 6 Oct 1789 [AL].  Became a Captain in the 38th “1st Staffordshire” Regiment 26 May 1795 and a Major in the same regiment 20 Feb 1796 when he was ranked 695 of 700 [AL].  In 1795-96 he was Commandant of the Hospital at Martinique [GW, his account book from this post is located at the National Army Museum in London].  In 1797, his last entry in the Army List,  his ranking was 635 of 696 [AL].  He was in the 11th Regiment of Foot [O’Byrne].  He died unmarried, and was bur. 25 Aug 1797 at Fort George, Grenada [GW, reg.].

George Tinlen.  Born 23 Apr 1783 in Maxton, Roxburghshire, son of James and Elizabeth (Hunter) Tinlen [reg.].  He was working as a hind in Broomhouses, Maxton in 1801 [LBR].  He married Margaret Dickieson [SCR].  She was born c. 1788 [death cert.].  They were living in Melrose, Roxburghshire in Sep 1813, May 1815, Apr 1819, Dec 1820, Feb 1823, Jul 1826, Apr 1830 [reg. trans., SCR].  In Apr 1819 he was living in Broomylees, Melrose, and was working as a shepherd [reg. trans.].  In 1841 he was living with daughter Margaret in Newhall Mill, Bowden, Roxburghshire, and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1851 he was living in Bowden, Roxburghshire, was married, and was working as a forester [cen.].  His wife was not listed with him.  He died 6 Feb 1858 at Blantyre’s Land, Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton, age 73, and was bur. in Melrose, Roxburghshire [cert.].  At the time of his death he was married and working as a forester [cert.].  She died on 24 May 1872 at 35 Leith Street, St. Andrew District, Edinburgh, age 84 [cert.].  Children: Elizabeth, James, John, George, Ann(e), Margaret, Isabella.  [One daughter (Catherine?) married R. Scott before Feb 1858, another married John Nicol (?) before May 1872 (neither one Elizabeth or Ann)].

 

George Tinlin.  Chr. 1 Feb 1784 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, son of George and Margaret (Nichol) Tinlin [reg.].  Living in Melrose, Roxburghshire in Dec 1808 [LK].  He had a natural daughter by Jean Crawford christened in Melrose in Apr 1811 [reg. trans.].  At the time he was working as a wright [reg. trans.].  He married Janet Gibson on 10 Jun 1810 in Melrose, Roxburghshire [reg. trans. says that they presented their certificate of marriage to the Melrose congregation on this date].  Living in Edinburgh, Midlothian in Dec 1810 [SCR].  He died in 1812 [LK].  She remarried and took her children to the U.S.  [LK].  Children by Jean Crawford: Jean.  Children by Janet Gibson: George, Louisa.

George Tinlen.  Born 4 Dec 1810 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, son of George and Janet (Gibson) Tinlen [SCR].  Cannot locate on 1850 U.S. census.  He married Ellen McGowan on 8 Jan 1855 in Newport, Rhode Island [reg.].  She was born c. 1800 in Ireland, and had been previously married [reg.].  He was a mason [marr. reg.].  He was listed in the Hartford, Connecticut city directory in 1861-62, a stonecutter, living at 56 Chestnut Street [Anc.].  In 1860, 1870 and 1880 he was living in Hartford, Connecticut with his sister Louisa, was working as a stone cutter, and his wife was not with him [cen.]. In 1889 he was living in Hartford, Connecticut, working as a stonecutter [Anc.].  [In the U.S. he spelled his name Tinline].

 

George Tinline.  Born 17 Sep 1815 in Corbridge or Halton, Northumberland, son of James and Jane (Lough) Tinline [cal., cen., LK, (not in Corbridge reg. trans.)].  He married Margaret Brown on 15 Dec 1838 in Corbridge, Northumberland [reg. trans., CR, cen.].  She was chr. 14 May 1815 in Hexham, Northumberland, daughter of William [and Ann (Ayr)?] Brown [cen., IGI].  At the time of their marriage they were both living in Corbridge, he was working as a joiner and she as a straw hat maker [reg. trans.].  In 1871 they were living in Elswick, Northumberland and he was working as a house carpenter and joiner [cen.].  They were living in Benwell, Northumberland in 1881 [cen.].  They were living in Benwell in 1891 and he was listed as a retired joiner [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1891 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 76 [CR].  He is probably the George Tinline who died 4th quarter 1896 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, age 81 [CR, LK].  Children: Mary, Ann, William, Jane, James, Margaret, Sarah, George Parker (?), George Parker (2nd). 

 

George Tinline.  Born 28 Oct 1815 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, son of John and Esther (Easton) Tinline [TF].  He began working for the National Bank of Scotland in Jedburgh on 31 Aug 1829 [TF].  He immigrated to Sydney, Australia, leaving Jedburgh on 26 Apr 1838, and worked there for the Bank of Australasia, then was transferred to Adelaide [TF].  At one time he lived in Unley, a suburb of Adelaide [corr.].  At the time of his marriage he was living in Stanley St. North, Adelaide [JT].  He married Helen Madder on 30 Nov 1843 at St. Johns Church, Adelaide, South Australia [TF].  She was born 22 Sep 1815, the eldest daughter of John and Janet (Oliver) Madder of Jedburgh, and left London on 27 Jun 1843 for Australia [JT, IGI, TF].  In 1847 they were living at Pennington Terrace in North Adelaide [JT].  He was the Acting-Manager of the Bank of South Australia in Adelaide in 1852 and was largely responsible for the passing of the Bullion Act of that year [TF].  He and his wife were passengers on the “Osmanli” which struck a reef off Kangaroo Island in South Australia and sank 23 Nov 1853 [KT, TF].  They survived the accident and the spot was later named Point Tinline [TF].  In 1860 they were living at Roxburgh House, Parkside in Australia [JT].  From 1860, he entered the wool business with his brother John and it was this, not his banking career, which let to his financial success [TF].  In Apr 1863 the family moved back to England [TF].  In Mar 1868 they settled at 17 Prince’s Square, Bayswater, London and were still there in Oct 1882 [Times marriage of daughter Esther].  They also had a residence in Lyndon, New Zealand [Times marriage of daughter Esther].  By 1886 they were living at 12 Pembridge Square, Bayswater, London [London Times 26 & 27 Jan 1886].  She died on 18 Oct 1889 at home in Pembridge Square, age 74 [CR, London Times, 21 Oct 1889, pg. 1, TF says she died at Bath].  He spent his final years at the Grange, Whimple, Devonshire [TF].  In 1894 he was listed at Pembridge Square, occupation FRGS (Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society) [London Court Directory 1894].  He died at midnight, 1-2 Feb 1895 in Melbourne, Australia, while on a trip [TF].  They were both bur. in Melrose, Roxburghshire [TF].  Two scholarships at Adelaide University were named after him by his nephew Sir George Murray, Chief Justice of South Australia [KT].  Children: Janet Oliver, Esther Mary, George John, Edward Stephen, James Madder, Helen Madder.

(FHO)].  In 1851 they were living in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, and he was working as an engine fitter [cen. (FHO)].  They were living in Liverpool, Lancashire in Jan 1858, Aug 1860, Jul 1864 [IGI].  In 1871 they were living in Liverpool and he was working as an engine fitter [cen.].  She died 4th quarter 1878 in West Derby District (Lancashire), age 49 [CR].  He was living in West Derby, Lancashire in 1881, a widower, working as a engineer fitter [cen.].  He was living with his son in Everton, Liverpool in 1891, a widower and a retired engine fitter [cen.]. She was born c. 1899 in London, daughter of Fred and Nana Storrie, both actors [calc., cen.].  She was a noted actress and dancer [numerous notices in the London Times throughout the 1910’s].  He was blown up twice in France and was invalided from the Army because of shell shock on 14 Dec 1917 [Times].  He went back to France as a voluntary ambulance driver in the French Red Cross, returning to Britain in Feb 1918 [Times].  She died in 2nd quarter 1918 in Kensington District (Middlesex), age 19 [CR].  He had joined the constabulary in Oct 1919, but was discharged after a fortnight as medically unfit [Times].  In 1920 in Piccadilly Circus, London, he ran over and killed a man with his car while drunk, and was listed in the Times as having no occupation [see many articles in the London Times, 1920-1].  At the time, he was living in the Curzon Hotel, London [Times].  He married 2nd Mrs. Elsie Dorinda M. George Evelyn Tinling, Capt.  Born 15 Apr 1895 in Hamilton, Ontario, son of Charles Widdrington and Louisa Brett Georgina (Ryall) Tinling [OBR, KB].  In 1901 he was living with his parents in Hamilton [cen.].  He was educated at the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario [London Gazette, 6 Jan 1915].  A captain in the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment [CWGC].   He led “A” Company of the 1st Battalion at the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 Oct 1917, near Poelcapelle and was killed in battle the same day [Internet, London Times, 11 Oct 1917, pg. 1].  He was awarded the Military Cross [Internet].
