Johanna Tinling.  Born in 1767, probably in Minorca, daughter of Isaac John and Johanne (Stubbs) Tinling [Hodgson, O’Byrne, NH (says born 1768)].  Was a witness at her brother William’s marriage at Boxgrove, Sussex in Jan 1790 [reg].  She married Pitt Burnaby Greene on 31 Jan 1793 at East Teignmouth, Devonshire [reg.].  He was chr. 14 Jun 1765 at St. James, Westminster, the only son of the poet Edward Burnaby Greene (nephew of Sir William Burnaby, 1st Baronet) and Ann Cartwright, and lived in St. Giles in the Fields, Middlesex at the time of his marriage [DNB, reg., GW, IGI].  He was a Captain in the Royal Navy [Hodgson].  They lived at Moira Place, Southampton from 1803-11 [GW].  He became captain of the ship Bonne Citoyenne in 1811 [Internet].  He was senior officer in the River Plate in South America from December 1811 until September 1812 [Internet].  They lived at The Upper House, Wickham, Southampton by 1822 [GW].  He died 24 Apr 1837 at Wickham and was bur. there on 2 May 1837, age 72 [London Times, 27 Apr 1837, page 7, BT (says age 71)].  She died at Wickham and was bur. there 28 May 1841, age 74 [London Times, 24 May 1841, page 7, BT].  They had children christened at All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire [reg.].

John (Jonathon) Tinling.  Married 1st Mary ______ [reg.].  They were living at Bowstoadhill, Burgh by Sands, Cumberland in May 1683 [reg.].  She was bur. 10 Feb 1700 [reg., BT has 18 Feb, as T˙nion in both].  He married 2nd Barbara Pearson on 22 Aug 1700 in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland [reg., BT].  At the time he was living in Bowstoadhill [reg., BT].  He was bur. 30 May 1713, at which time his residence was Bowsteadhill [BT].  She was bur. 4 Apr 1716, a widow, when her last residence had been Bowstoadhill [reg.].  Children: George, Robert.

John (Jonathan) Tinling.  Probably a son of Andrew and Margaret Tinling of Burgh by Sands.  He married 1st Elizabeth Hodgson on 21 Jul 1684 in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland [BT as Tining].  At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Burgh by Sands [BT].  She was bur. 19 Apr 1701 in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland [BT has 18 Feb, reg. under Tynion].  He married 2nd Mary Sawer on 11 Jan 1709 in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland [reg., BT].  They were living in Burgh by Sands in Apr 1709, Oct 1711, May 1715 [IGI].   In 1712 and 1715 they were living in North-End, Burgh by Sands [reg., BT].  She was bur. 3 Mar 1741 in Burgh by Sands, at which time her residence had been Sandifield [BT under Tinnion].  Children by Elizabeth Hodgson: Mary.  Children by Mary Sawer: Margaret, Jonathan, Robert.  [But see John Tinling born c. 1680 below].

 

John Tinlinge.  Chr. 21 Jul 1667 in Arthuret Parish, Cumberland, son of Jo(hn) Tinlinge [reg.].  Probably the “John sonne of John Tininge” who was bur. on 19 Feb 1668 in Arthuret Parish [reg.].

 

John Tinlin.  Married Agnes Broun [reg.].  In 1669, he was a weaver in Hawick [reg.].  Living in Hawick, Roxburghshire in Mar 1672, Oct 1674, Feb 1677, Jun 1679, Apr 1682, Oct 1684 [reg.]. He is listed in Hawick in Mar 1686, and for the last time in Jul 1697 [reg.].  In 1694 he donated money towards a town bell [Annals of Hawick].  Children: Robert, daughter, Thomas, George, Agnes, daughter.  [Probably also a son Walter].

 

John Tinlyne.  Chr. 29 Sep 1672 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, son of Thomas and Issobell (Laidlaw) Tinlyne [reg.].

 

John Tinline.  First mentioned in Kirklands, Ancrum Parish, Roxburghshire in 1695, when he was taxed for one hearth [TL as Tinling].  He was living as a tenant in Kirklands, Ancrum, Roxburghshire from Feb 1704 to Feb 1717, except for a short time in Richlands, Ancrum around 1711 [reg.].  See several entries in Ancrum church register Apr 1712 – Jul 1714, when he was exonerated of a charge of fornication brought against him by the church [reg.].  He was still living in Sep 1729, but was deceased before 24 Sep 1738 [daughters’ marriage records].  Children: George, Anna, Margaret, Janet, Agnas, John, Christian, Elizabeth, Helen.

John Tinlin.  Chr. 26 Dec 1697 in Hayton, Cumberland, son of William and Isabel Tinlin [reg.].  He was living in Hayton Parish in Dec 1723, May 1725 [IGI].  He signed his will on 15 Apr 1763 [will].  He was bur. 19 Apr 1763 in Hayton [reg.].  His will was proved 2 Jul 1768 [will].  His (unnamed) wife survived him [will].  Children: John, Mary (Ann).

 

John Tinling.  Living in Hexham Parish, Northumberland in Mar 1721, Mar 1725, Feb 1728 [IGI].  He is probably the John Tinling who was bur. 21 Mar 1740 in St. Andrew’s, Hexham [FHO].  Children: Jane, George, Margaret.

St., Carlisle, and in Jun 1784 in Annotwell St., Carlisle [reg.].  Children: Thomas (twin), David (twin), Betty, Jane, Mary, Martha, Anne.  [His name is normally spelled Tinning in the records, and this is how he wrote it himself.]

John Tinline.  Chr. 20 Mar 1743 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, son of George and Isabella (White) Tinline [reg.].  He married 1st Christian Halliday in Crailing, Roxburghshire (he paid the church consignation money on 14 Jun 1772) [daughter’s death cert., reg. only has his name].  They were living in Nisbet, Crailing in May 1773, May 1775 and in Caverton Miln, Eckford, Roxburghshire in Aug 1777 [reg., daughter’s death cert.].  She evidently died between 1777 and 1781 [calc.].  He married 2nd Elizabeth (Betty) King on 11 Nov 1781 in Eckford, Roxburghshire and on 28 Nov 1781 at the Gateshaw Associate Session, Morebattle, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR].  They lived in Eckford Parish: in Moss Tower in Aug 1783, and Apr 1785, in Eckford Miln in Apr 1787, in Moss Tower in Feb 1788, in Eckford Miln in Mar 1789, and in Caverton Miln in Mar 1794 and Jul 1796 [reg.].  He worked as a farm servant and a ploughman, but in 1794 he was called a miller [reg., children’s death certs.].  “Tinline hall” was a place name in Eckford found in the parish registers c. 1800-10 (and possibly later), but other families were living there.  They were both dead by Aug 1855 [son’s death cert.].  Children by 1st wife: George, William, Janet [,Ann?].  Children by 2nd wife: John, Christian, Jane, James, Helen, Andrew, Isabella, John (2nd).  [It is possible that these were two different John Tinlins with their respective wives, both living simultaneously in Eckford.]

They were living in Bowden in May 1806 at which time he was a servant to Mr. Thomas Blaikie in Riddletonhill [reg.].  They were living at Riddletonhill, Maxton in May 1808 [reg.].  They were living in Eddlestone, Peebleshire in 1809 and 1816 [corr.]. John Tinline.  Chr. 17 Apr 1791 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, son of George and Margaret (Nichol) Tinline [reg.].  He married Esther Easton on 17 Nov 1814 in St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh [JT, SCR].  She was born c. 1790, the fourth daughter of Robert Easton of Jedburgh [TF, JT, AE].  They were living in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire in Dec 1820, Aug 1823, Aug 1828 [SCR].  He was a hostler [reg.].  She died at Hundalee Mill near Jedburgh in Jul 1839, age 49, and was bur. in Jedburgh Abbey graveyard, Roxburghshire [AE, TF].  He died 14 Dec 1867 in Murray Park, Magill, South Australia and was bur. in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide [JT, AE, Nelson Evening Mail (18 Jan 1868) says he died 15 Dec 1867].  Children: George, Robert, John, Margaret, Mary.  [Also see Ann Tinline, bur. 1842].

Living in Bowden in Apr 1833, Apr 1835, May 1837, Jul 1839, Apr 1842, Oct 1843, Apr 1846, Oct 1848, Apr 1851 [SCR].  He was a master blacksmith in Bowden [son’s marr. cert.].  In 1841 they were living in Bowden, and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Bowden, and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.]. She died before 1861 and apparently before 1855 [cen., SCVL].  In 1861 he was living on Main Street in Bowden, at which time he was a widower and a retired blacksmith [cen.]. The poet Thomson refers to him in one of his poems [CT].  He died in 1862 in Bowden District [SCVL].  Children: Isabella Jane, Elizabeth, James, George, Janet Bell, Margaret, Mary, William, John.

John Tinline.  Born and chr. 3 Dec 1820 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, son of John and Esther (Easton) Tinline [JT, SCR]. [Chr. 8 Oct 1820  - LK].  Worked at Messrs. Rutherford & Thompson, solicitors in Jedburgh [JT].  Left Jedburgh in Sep 1839 for Sydney and Adelaide; went to New Zealand in Sep 1840 [TF].  In Oct 1840, he and some partners opened a business as storekeepers in Lampton Quay (Wellington) [TF].  He settled in Nelson in early 1842 [TF].  He was appointed Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court in 1844 and was later Deputy Registrar in Nelson, and served as Sheriff of the Province of Nelson for five years [Internet, TF].   He was sent by the New Zealand government in 1850 to find a suitable land route between Nelson and the Wairau [KT].  He owned very large sheep farms in several places in New Zealand [TF]. Mt. Tinline, Tinline River, the Tinline Downs, etc. in New Zealand were named after him [JT].  In Jan 1868 he was living in Amuri [father’s obit.].  In 1891 he was listed as staying in the Tavistock Hotel, Covent Garden, London, when he was single, and working as a cattle sheep foreman [cen.].  He died 26 Feb 1907 in Nelson, New Zealand [JT, LK].

John Tinlin.  Born 14 Apr 1820 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, son of William and Elizabeth (Yellowley) Tinlin [reg.].  Chr. 25 Apr 1820 at the Great Bavington Presbyterian Church, Northumberland [reg.].  In 1841 he was living at the Kirkharle Vicarage, working as a house servant [cen.].  He married Jane Nichol on 9 Jul 1849 in Birtley, Northumberland [reg., CR].  She was born c. 1824 in Thorneyburn Parish, Northumberland, daughter of Andrew and Jane (Mather) Nichol.  He was a laborer [reg.].  In Jul 1849 they were living at High-shield-green in Birtley Parish [reg.].  In 1851 they were living in Kirkwhelpington [cen.]. They were living in Hill Head, Bolam Parish, Northumberland in Aug 1859 and in 1861 when his occupation was gamekeeper [reg., cen.].  She died 11 Oct 1864 in High Angerton, Northumberland [CR, cert.].  In 1871 he was a widower living alone as a lodger at a public house in Newham, Northumberland, working as a farm labourer [cen.].  Cannot locate on 1881 census.  He died before his son Andrew’s marriage in 1892 [cert.].  Children: William, Andrew, Edmund.

 


John Tinling.  Apparently a black man, working as an apprentice to Isaac John Tinling in Christ Church, Barbados [reg.].  He married Anna Maria Reece on 14 Sep 1837 in Christ Church, Barbados [reg.].  Neither were able to sign their names, which makes it certain they were not members of Isaac John Tinling’s family [reg. (although he could possibly be a natural son of Isaac John Tinling)].  She was an apprentice of “Wilcox”, probably meaning Wilcox Plantation, where the Reece family lived [reg.].  They were living in Christ Church in Jul 1838, Aug 1840, May 1842, Feb 1846, Feb 1848 and in St. Michael, Barbados in Dec 1843 [reg., IGI].  In Jul 1838 he was working as a porter at Welcome Hall, and in Aug 1840 he was working as a domestic in Abbey [reg.].  Children: John Edward, Frederick, Elizabeth, Louisa, Samuel William, Maria Mercy.  [A John Tinling died in 1854 in St. Michael’s, Barbados, and another John Tinling died in 1854 in Christ Church, Barbados].

Julia Tinlin.  Born c. 1853 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, daughter of Thomas and Beatrice Ann (Wilson) Tinlin [cen., JT].  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Lidgate, Ancrum, Roxburghshire [cen.].  In 1871 she was a witness at her sister Jane’s wedding [cert.].  In 1881 she was living with her parents in Maxton, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  In 1887 she was a witness at her sister Alice’s wedding [cert.].  In 1901 she was living in Oxnam, Roxburghshire, was unmarried, and was working as an “out worker” [cen.].  She died unmarried on 14 Oct 1904 at Kelso, Roxburghshire, and was bur. in Roxburgh Cemetery [JT, SCVL].
