”UNION-HALL.—Yesterday a brutal fellow, named James Tinling, a groom in the service of T. Richardson, Esq., who resides in the Kent-road, was, before M. SWABEY, Esq., charged with having maliciously stabbed a very valuable horse, the property of his master.

The greatest indignation was excited by the examination.  Mr. Richardson stated, that about six o’clock on Thursday evening, as he was sitting in his parlour, he heard a very unusual noise proceeding from the stable.  He immediately ran into the yard, and upon looking through the stable window, saw the prisoner, with a large stable fork in his hand, making a furious attack upon one of the horses.  The poor animal plunged very much, and groaned, but the prisoner continued the attack, and inflicted a desperate wound in the jaw of the horse, the prongs of the fork having entered about two inches.  The witness entered the stable, and reprobated the cruelty of the fellow, but was himself soon given to understand that as little ceremony would be shown to himself as had been shown to the poor horse.  ‘D—n you, you old villain,’ said the prisoner.  ‘I’ll serve you as I have served your horse, and I’ll set your house on fire too.’  The witness added, that of late the prisoner was in the habit of drinking very much, and that the abominable habit had wrought the greatest change in the unfortunate man.  The horse was rendered useless in consequence of the wound.

The Magistrate strongly reprobated the inhumanity of the prisoner and sentenced him to pay a fine of 5l., to be imprisoned for two months in the House of Correction, and to find securities to keep the peace.”

“From the LONDON GAZETTE, Saturday, May 28. […]  WAR OFFICE, May 27.  His Majesty has been pleased to appoint the following Officers to take rank, by Brevet, as undermentioned.  The commissions to be dated May 27, 1825:-- […] To be LIEUTENANT-GENERALS in the Army – […] David Latimer Tinling Widdrington […]

”On Saturday last, Captain S. Sidney Widrington, of Chichester, accompanied a party of gentlemen on a shooting excursion to the Paldoc Coppice, Goodwood.  The Captain had just killed a woodcock, which he sent his servant to pick up, and then loaded one of the barrels of his gun, and gave it to the servant to load the other; in doing which some of the shots accidently passed into the barrel loaded by the Captain, in which, as indicating that it was loaded, the ram-rod had been left, and which the shot prevented being drawn out.  In endeavouring to extract it by force, the servant having hold of the butt-end, and the Captain the rod, the barrel the servant had loaded accidentally went off, and the charge passed between the Captain’s right arm and side, wounding both in a shocking manner, but providentially not injuring any of the main arteries.  He was taken home in the Duke of Richmond’s carriage; and we have much satisfaction in adding, that he is now considered in a fair way of recovery.  It was generally reported on Saturday, that the whole of the charge had gone into the right side, and passed out at his shoulder; but this, it appears, was incorrect.  Lord G. Lennox was so close as to feel some of the shots strike him in the face.—Brighton Herald.

“A most distressing occurrence happened at Tunbridge-wells on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 22d inst., by the overturning of a light four-wheel carriage, in which was Miss Widdrington (daughter of Lieutenant-General Widdrington) and her groom; in consequence of which the lady received such severe injuries as to banish every hope of recovery from the minds of the medical gentlemen, who were immediately on the spot to render assistance.  She was, however, taken into the Hand and Sceptre Inn, where (lying quite insensible till Friday night) she died, without any apparent pain whatever.  The groom, when taken up, appeared also lifeless; but, though very much bruised and hurt, is in a fair way of recovery. – Brighton Gazette.”

"The late Admiral Tinling. - Our obituary contains a record of the death of Mr. Charles Ashley Stubbs Tinling, Rear-Admiral of the Red, aged 77.  This gallant officer entered the navy in 1778, on board the Porcupine, Captain the late Admiral Sir Charles Knowles, and was midshipman in that ship at the time she fought her gallant motion with two Spanish frigates in 1780.  He afterwards commanded a gunboat in the memorable siege of Gibraltar, serving with the marine brigade on shore, a Spanish line of battle ship being driven on shore and taken possession of.  At the time of his death Rear-Admiral Tinling was the only surviving naval officer who served the whole of that memorable siege.  On his return to England he served in different ships commanded by the first officers of the day.  He was a lieutenant in the Orion in Lord Howe's action in the year 1794; and was made commander in 1797, and actively employed in the North Sea and West Indies in 1801, including the expedition to the Holder, and was made post in 1801, and commanded the Dictator of 64 guns in the English Channel. - Hampshire Advertiser."
