Family Group 7

Michael & Myron Osborn, Jay Osman, Garry & Robert Osmun, Danny Osmon

Caution, Warning, Disclaimer:  The ancestral lines shown below are the ancestors that each project member, highlighted in yellow, BELIEVES to be their ancestors.  Standards of proof or evidence used by each member may vary, and documentation for each ancestor may vary.  These listings alone should not be taken as proof of ancestry; they are shown here to facilitate the finding of a common ancestor by project members or by others who may wish to test to see if their ancestral lines connect to one of the members.  For more information, please contact the individual members at the email addresses listed below.

With the addition of the newest member to this Family Group, Danny W Osmon, this group has become the perfect example of successfully using dna to find your ancestors.  Danny believes he knows his ancestral line back to his immigrant ancestor.  Assuming that Danny is correct, although the other members of this group do not know how they connect to Danny’s line yet, they now know who their distant ancestors were.  This must be great satisfaction for Lorri who was the first and only member of this group for many years.

Lorri French joined the Osborn-Ausburn surname project to research her husband, Michael Osborn’s ancestors in Dec 2003.  For a long time Lorri and Michael were totally unrelated to anyone else in the project with his genetic distances quite different from anyone else. Then, in about Dec 2005, a message suddenly appeared on Lorri’s FTDNA Y-dna page saying that a Garry Osmun was a perfect match at both 12 and 25 markers.  We had no Garry Osmun in our project, so he must have tested somewhere else in FTDNA.  Only a y-dna researcher can imagine the thrill to suddenly find someone else with such a close match!   After much sleuthing, we finally made contact with Garry and his cousin Sharon who is the active researcher, and they have transferred his results into our project so we can compare the ancestral lines.  Now, both Michael and Garry have the 37 marker test, the results show a genetic distance of only 1 at 37 markers.  There are only a few other pairs of people in the entire project who are as close as one at 37 markers!  Still we don’t know Michael and Garry’s common ancestor, or how the surname might have changed so much.

Then, in October 2006, Jay M Osman joined the project from the Genographic Project and his test showed a perfect 12-marker match to Michael and Garry, putting him into Family Group 7.  Jay has extended his test to both 25-marker and 37-marker, and he is also a perfect match to both Michael and Garry at 25 markers.  With all three now having the 37 marker test, we can identify the most likely ancestral haplotype, who turns out to be Michael.  See the Alleles table.  With Michael as the most likely ancestral haplotype, we can compare his alleles with each of the others, and we see that each of Gary and Jay are off by only one value in one marker.  That means that each of their lines has had one mutation relative to Michael’s line.

In January 2008, Michael Swanson, using his uncle Robert Osmun’s dna, joined the project currently with a 25 marker test.  Robert is a perfect match at 25 markers to all the others in this group.  In April 2008, Michael found and recruited Danny W Osmon to join the project and it is Danny’s line that shows the immigrant ancestor.  Many thanks to Danny and Michael.

Now in this Group there are FOUR people who are as perfect match on 25 markers, and the three who have had the 37 marker test are only off by one value at one marker on the 37-marker test.  Yet they still don’t know how they are related.

The FTDNATip results are shown as mouse-overs in all the genetic distance tables.  Below is a little more detailed description using the results between Michael and Garry.  Similar results exist between all of the members of this Family Group.

Shown below are the FTDNATip results for the probability of a common ancestor between Michael and Garry, for both an unconditional probability and for a conditional probability knowing that they are not related within 6 generations.  As the table shows, the probability is quite high for a common ancestor within a few generations, and gets even higher if we know that they are not related within 6 generations, which is the case based on known or believed ancestral lines.  The probability is 72% that the common ancestor is within just 4 generations prior to the present earliest known ancestor.  This is a great opportunity for some real genealogical detective work.

Sharon Osmun Hagarty is researching her Osmun ancestors.  At the present time, her third cousin once removed, Garry Osmun, is the closest living male in the Osmun line, so he has contributed his dna for the test.  Their common ancestor is Daniel D (II) Osmun, her 2nd great-grandfather, and his 3rd great-grandfather.  Below are Sharon and Garry’s ancestors as far back as Sharon has been able to trace them.

Migration.  (Copied from Danny’s web site listed below.)  The Osmons/Osmans came to the U.S. when Thomas Osman came from Bedfordshire, England in 1635 and settled in Suffolk Co., Long Island, NY. The Osmons then went to Hunterdon Co., NJ, Hampshire Co., VA (now WV). Revolutionary War veteran Charles Osmon then moved to Adams Co., OH. His son, Jabez Osmon, moved to Daviess Co., IN. My gggrandfather, Jabez Charles David Osmon, and my ggrandfather Elijah Ellsworth Osmon, moved to Arkansas. Other Osmons continued west.”
