Books, Notes, and Sources
These pages contain some abstracts and extracts from some of the sources used in my Rootsweb tree. These are working documents, in a constant state of flux, and not at all polished. By no means are all of my sources here.
There are also some (only one at present) books based on the data. These books should be considered to be DRAFTs only, both editorially and genealogically. Nevertheless they may prove helpful to some.
I use the LifeLines program to store and manipulate my data. The user interacts with LifeLines by typing Gedcom into an editor, not through a GUI. This gives you tremendous flexibility, does not limit you to what the program's author thought you should be able to do, and allows you to exploit (or even abuse) Gedcom fully. I follow (for the most part) some conventions in my Gedcom, including some extra tags.
The books are created using a combination of a LifeLines program and some Unix shell scripts. The LifeLines program is based on a program written by another, but has been heavily modified by me.
The books are typeset using LaTeX2ε, and the bibiographies were
created with BibTeX. The PDFs were created either with
dvips
and ps2pdf
, or with
pdflatex
.
- Books
- So far there is just one book:
- Sources
-
This is a list of all my sources, sorted by the Gedcom
REFN
tag. I use theREFN
tag as an index to my paper files, so, in general, only sources I have on paper get aREFN
tag, though there are exceptions. The contents of the tag, in addition to acting as an index, give a hint as to the kind of record it is. The S number for each source is just the internal key used by LifeLines. This same key is used in the Gedcom. This lists all the sources for each person in the database. To prevent the file from getting too big, it just gives the title and the S number (in parentheses) for each source. It is still fairly large.
And this is a list for each source of all people in the database whose entry cites the source. The sources are sorted by title. This is also quite large.
- Families
-
I started with one file for each of my great-grandparents'
families, including all their ancestors and descendants of
whatever surname. Thus, if you are looking for the Chapman
family, for instance, look under Glendenning. However, some
of those files had so little in them that there was no point
in keeping them separate, and some others got so big that
parts of them had to be separated.
There is also have a file for my aunt's late ex-husband's family:
The Clazeys in this file I have not yet been able to connect to my family (or I just haven't got around to moving the information to the other Clazey file).
