Generation I

WILLIAM HUNTT - I do not know when or where he was born, or when he first came to Isle of Wight Co.,VA - where he died intestate after 9 April 1666 and by 1 May 1668 (1,2) Until his children reached maturity, the name was spelled HUNTT. Was his line always spelled with the two ts, or did he do this to separate his family from other HUNT lines - possibly that of WILLIAM HUNT, the "Baconite"?

(_______ _______) - Did he have a 1st wife, mother of WILLIAM and MARY, who was the daughter of ELIZABETH BOUCHER by a previous

marriage before she married DANIEL BOUCHER? (3)

(Judith _______) - This was the name of his wife at his death. Was she a widow, with daughter JUDITH, when he married her? As the relict of

WILLIAM HUNTT, she married RICHARD PARKER by 1 May 1668 when he was granted

administration, in right of his wife, on WILLIAM HUNTT's estate. (2)

The Parkers moved to Surry Co., Va., by 1673 when he was in the Tithable Tax there with 3 tithes, the other two not being named. He was listed in the Upper part of Southwork Parish in BENJAMIN HARRISON's list. In 1674 he had 2 tithes and in 1675 only 1 tithe. 1676 is not extant, (5) RICHARD PARKER died intestate by 4 Sept. 1677 when JUDITH PARKER; his relict, was granted administration on his estate. (6) In the 1677 Tithable Tax she was listed as, "At Mrs, Parker's: JESPER GRANSOME, 1 tithe." In the 1678 tax she was listed as "Mrs. Parker: JESPER GRANSOM & WILLIAM HUNT, 2 tithes."(5) JUDITH PARKER died intestate by I July 1679 in Surry Co. when WILLIAM HUNT, was granted administration on her estate. (8) Her only known issue by Parker was:

RICHARD PARKER (JR.) He was listed as an "Orphan" on 25 March 1682 when the Court stated that "half of her thirds was due him. (9) On 4th May 1682, WILLIAM HUNT, with ARTHUR ALLEN & BENJAMIN HARRISON as securities, gave bond for him to pay RICHARD PARKER, orphan son of RICHARD PARKER, dec'd, a child's part of his "late mother, JUDITH PARKER's, estate when of age."(l0) He was in the 1686 through 1690 Tithable Tax in WILLIAM HUNT, 's household (5) & possibly born after his father's death,

The first record found for this WILLIAM HUNTT, II was in Isle of Wight Co., Va., on 9 April 1666 when it was recorded that he and MR. TABERER were securities for GEORGE WALKER who requested the administration on estate of DAVID WARREN, in right of his wife, MARGARET WALKER the relict, (l) (David Warren was a Mariner of the city of Bristol, and Taberer was of "Chuckatuck" & a Justice of Isle of Wight Co.)

On 1 May 1668 the administration of the estate of WILLIAM HUNTT, deceased, was granted to RICHARD PARKER, in right of his wife, JUDITH the relict of said HUNTT. (2)

2

DANIEL BOUCHER dated his will 4 Dec. 1667 and it was recorded in IOW Co. 1 May 1668. Among other bequeaths he left items to "WILLIAM HUNTT, son of WILLIAM HUNTT", and to "MARY HUNTT, daughter of WILLIAM HUNTT", - each a "cow: calf," Also, without naming them, he left the residue of his estate to the "grandchildren of my deceased wife, ELIZABETH." (There.were 6 or 7 children listed with specific bequeaths in his will. Were these the grandchildren?) He died 11 March 1667/8. (3)

On 18 May 1668 "the inventory of that part of the estate which now belongs to WILLIAM & MARY HUNTT in the hands of RICHARD PARKER, the Father-in-law, on the estate of WILLIAM HUNTT,, deceased, and it was divided by JOHN MUNGOR & ROBERT KAE, upon the request of the said PARKER & JAMES CLARK, who married one of the orphans of the said HUNTT. 18 Day May 1669 -" The inventory list followed and consisted of live stock, provisions, furniture & linens. Signed by JOHN MUNGOR & ROBERT KAE. (4)

RICHARD PARKER acknowledged holding the above inventory and said he would give it to the "Orphans" Dated 9 August 1669, The inventory and acknowledgement were accepted and recorded on 9 December 1669. (4)

The following record cannot now be located: On __ day of ___1667 ROBERT EDWARDS, who had married MARY HUNTT, was listed as administrator of his Father-in-law, WILLIAM HUNTT's,, estate when he signed a deed of release from himself to WILLIAM PARKER. (7) (Since RICHARD PARKER died in 1677, and since it is believed that WILLIAM HUNTT, II,, became of age about this year, it is wondered if this deed of release was made to William HUNTT, and not to William PARKER.)

I find no land records that indicate where WILLIAM HUNTT, lived in IOW Co. or if and when the PARKERS got land in Surry Co.

ISSUES:

II-A WILLIAM HUNTT/HUNT, - In Daniel Boucher's will 1667. Called "orphan" in

1668, First found as a tithable in 1678 (all males over 16 were tithable) so born by 1661.

II-B MARY HUNTT - in Daniel Boucher's will 1667. Called "orphan" in 1668. Married by 1677 to ROBERT EDWARDS? He died, intestate, by 2 May 1681 in IOW, (7,13) It is stated that his widow married next OWEN GRIFFIN/GRIFFITH who died, leaving a will dated 15 July 1698 in IOW. (14) WILLIAM BODDIE was her last husband and predeceased her. She left a will dated 17 Jan., 1727, recorded 24 April 1732, IOW Co, as MARY BODDIE. (15)

ISSUES: (continued)

3

(II-B issues:) (14,15,16)

III-A MARY EDWARDS - married JAMES BRAGG

III-B JUDITH EDWARDS - married · CLARK

III-C MARGARET EDWARDS - living in 1699

III-D SARAH GR1FFITH - married JOINER

III-E ANN GIRFFITH - married THOMAS DRAKE

It has been stated that JUDITH was also a child of WILLIAM HUNTT,, by his wife JUDITH, and that she married JAMES CLARK, This information was evidently gleaned from the above quoted record of 18 May 1668 regarding the estate of WILLIAM & MARY. (4) That record does NOT give JUDITH's last name, and I can find no other record indicating who she was.

JUDITH was NOT listed in the will of DANIEL BOUCHER.

JUDITH was married to JAMES CLARK by the 18 May 1668 record, which stated "JAMES CLARK, who married one of the orphans of the said Huntt" (a stepdaughter would have been considered an orphan)

JUDITH had to be at least age 13 when married - so born by 1655. This date seems much earlier than the estimated birth dates for William & Mary.

JUDITH is NOT a name found in the line of his son, William.

I believe WILLIAM, I, wife, JUDITH, was a widow with a daughter, JUDITH, when she married WILLIAM HUNTT, as his last wife.

If this is true, then JUDITH married JAMES CLARK WHO DIED, INTESTATE, BY August 1672 when JUDITH, his relict, requested administration on his estate. She married next THOMAS HARRIS who also died intestate in IOW Co, by March 1713 with his appraisal being submitted by JUDITH HARRIS. (11) Issues unknown.

II-A

WILLIAM HUNTT/HUNT, - Born by 1661 as he was first found as a tithable, so over 16, in

1678 Surry Co. (5) He was called an orphan in 1669. (4) He died

between 20 March 1711 and 20 June 1711, Surry Co. (17)

(Sarah ____________) - He was married by 1683 as his son, William, was first a tithable

in 1700. (5) His wife's name was SARAH in 1693/4 (18) and in

1701 (19,20) SARAH, as Executrix of his will, returned his inventory. (21)

He was listed as WILLIAM HUNTT,, son of WILLIAM HUNTT,, in the 1667 will of DANIEL BOUCHER and got a 'cow: calf'. (3) As WILLIAM HUNTT,, orphan, in 1668/9 his part of the estate of his father was listed as in the hands of RICHARD PARKER, father-in-law. (4) The spelling HUNT was used from his first tax record on.

Tithable age was 'over 16' and he was first found in the Surry Co. tithable lists in 1678 in the household of MRS. PARKER in the district of BENJAMIN HARRISON which was from "Sunken Marsh to the upper end of Surry Co." This section was later called "Upper Precinct of Southwark Parish. (5) Was it also called "Outer Precinct of Surry Co.?

On 1 July 1679 he requested administration on the estate of JUDITH PARKER in Surry Co, (8)

Surry Co. tithable lists: 1679, WILLIAM HUNT & JESPER GRANSUM, 2 tithes; 1680, WILLIAM HUNT & NATHAN JOYCE, 2 tithes; 1681, WILLIAM HUNT & NATHAN JOYCE & ANTHO DAVIS, 3 tithes; 1682, WILLIAM HUNT & NATHAN JOYCE, 2 tithes. (5)

On 7 June 1682 WILLIAM HUNTpaid 2000 lbs. tobacco to WILLIAM CHIVERS for two necks of land, 100 acres, on Northeast side of Gravelly Run in Surry Co, adjacent to THOMAS PIDDINTON & WILLIAM KNOTT. (19) He & Sarah sold this in 1701.

In 1682 the Surry Co. Court ordered WILLIAM HUNT, with ARTHUR ALLEN & BENJAMIN HARRISON as securities, to pay RICHARD PARKER, orphan son of RICHARD PARKER, dec'd a child's part of his late mother, JUDITH PARKER's estate when of age.(20)

Surry Co. tithable Lists: 1683, WILLIAM HUNT, 1 tithe; 1685, 1 tithe; 1686 WILLIAM HUNT & RICHARD PARKER, 2 tithes; 1687, WILLIAM HUNT, RICHARD PARKER, FJILLIAM WHEELER, 3 tithes; 1688, he was not found in this list; 1689 WILLIAM HUNT, RICHARD PARKER, JOHN KERSEY, 3 tithes; 1690, WILLIAM HUNT, RICHARD PARKER, JOHN KERSEY, 3 tithes; 1691 WILLIAM HUNT, ROBERT CARTRIGHT, 2 tithes; 1692, WILLIAM HUNT, ROBERT CARTRIGHT, 2 tithes; 1693, WILLIAM HUNT, ROBERT CARTRIGHT, WILLIAM WHEELER, 3 tithes. (5)

On 9 February 1693 WILLIAM HUNT & SARAH (X) HUNT witnessed the POA EDMUND IRBY to BART. FOWLER (21)

5

Surry Co, Tithable lists: 1694, WILLIAM HUNT, JAMES STANTON, WILLIAM BENTLEY, 3 tithes; 1695, WILLIAM HUNT, EDWARD JACKSON, 2 tithes. (5)

On 2 December 1695 THOMAS HAY deeded to WILLIAM HUNT 100 acres in Surry Co., Southwark Parish, adjacent to HUNT's land. This deed was quoted when in 1701 he and SARAH sold it(22)

Surry Co. tithable lists; 1696, WILLIAM HUNT, 1 tithe; 1697, 1 tithe; 1698, WILLIAM HUNT & WILLIAM AUSTEN, 2 tithes; 1699, WILLIAM HUNT, JAMES ELLISI & WILLIAM OSTENI 3 tithes; 1700, WILLIAM HUNT & HIS SON WILLIAM, & WILLIAM OSTEN, 3 tithes (5)

By June 1699 the land South of the Main Blackwater had been opened and a Committee examined the claims to this land. WILLIAM HUNT and a HUISHA GILLIAM both had claims, No acreage was given but their land was "Seated" (23) Had he moved to this land?

On 25 April 1701 WILLIAM HUNT patented 348 acres on the South side of the Main Blackwater, adjacent to CAPT. NATHANIEL HARRISON and THE CORN FIELD, for the transfer of 7 people; JOHN GOOD, 6 times, & SARAH LEW/LOW. (24) HUISHA GILLAM also patented, on the same day, 348 acres on the South side of Main Blackwater, near Nottoway River and THE CORN FIELD (24)

On 3 November 1701 WILLIAM HUNT, with wife, SARAH (X), made two deeds. They sold the 1682 100 acres, from WILLIAM CHIVERS, to JAMES COOPER; and the 1695 100 acres, from THOMAS HAY, to JOHN BENTLY. Both were witnessed by NATHANIEL HARRISON, HINSHAW GILLAM, & THOMAS HOLT (22/25)

Surry Co. tithable lists: 1701, WILLIAM HUNT, WILLIAM HIS SON, WILLIAM OSTEEN & PETER KIRSEY, 4 tithes; 1702, WILLIAM HUNT, WILLIAM HUNT, JR., WILLIAM OSTEN, 6 PETER CASEY 4 tithes; 1703, WILLIAM HUNT, SON WILLIAM, WILLIAM OSTEN & PETER KERSEY, a Negro, 4 tithes. Listed next to William was a LAWRENCE HUNT, 1 tithe (5)

In 1704 there was a Land Tax, not just a person tithe as before, and it listed this WILLIAM HUNT with 696 acres. (23) (Was he deeded an additional 348 acres by HINSHA GILLAM?) It seems that William lived on this land. (See his 1709 deed)

On 15 Sept. 1707 WILLIAM HUNT had had a survey for 1120 acres made by JOHN ALLEN for land in Surry Co., South of the Blackwater. (23) I find no patent to William II for this land, but in 1718 WILLIAM III did get a patent for this amount and it seems to have been inherited by his son, HENRY, as his "heir at law" See later, Where did WILLIAM II get all the land he left in his will? 1200 acres were specifically bequeathed - plus "my now dwelling plantation"

On 7 March 1709 WILLIAM HUNT (no wife signed) sold to a JUDITH HUNT (who was she?) of Surry Co., for 5 sh. 100 acres, more or less, "that is ALL OF THE PART OF THE DIVIDENT OF LAND WHEREON YE SAID WILLIAM HUNT NOW LIVETH that lyes on ye W. side of a branch known by name of Austin's Branch" Wit: HENRY HARRISON & NICHOLAS MAGET (26)

6

Did William HuntII build a new home? If so, it was most likely on this same 696 acres, for in his will in 1711 he left his NOW DWELLING PLANTATION, with all the land between TANYARD BRANCH & OSTIN'S (AUSTIN'S??) BRANCH, to his son, JOHN HUNT.

WILLIAM EDMUNDS patented land in 1713, 1723, & 1732 that was on or near AUSTIN'S BRANCH between the Blackwater & Nottoway Rivers. The 1723 patent was adjacent WILLIAM HUNT & his own land. The 1732 patent was on both sides AUSTIN's BRANCH adjacent RICHARD PARKER, JOHN HUNT, & his own land. RICHARD PARKER patented in

1715 land on South Side Blackwater River on East side AUSTIN'S BRANCH. NICHOLAS BUSH, in 1728, patented land on North side of Nottoway River & East side AUSTIN'S BRANCH adjacent RICHARD PARKER, Jr. & the Cyprus Swamp (27) This land fell into Sussex Co. in 1756.

WILLIAM HUNT dated his will 20 March 1711 and signed it. It was recorded 20 June 1711. He listed "my wife", not naming her, and made her "my whole Executrix". "Overseeres" of his will were MAJOR NATHANIEL HARRISON, CART. HENRY HARRISON, & MR. JNO. SIMMONS, Witnesses: JAMES STANTON, CURTIS LAND, & JNO. MOSS. After bequeaths to his children, as listed below, he directed that "the remainder part of my estate be equally divided between my wife and all my children (l7) His inventory & appraisement were returned by SARAH (X) HUNT, Executrix of his will (18)

ISSUES: according to his will:

III-A WILLIAM HUNT -Received "200 acres adjacent to where he now lives & 1

Negro woman named Kate but my wife to have use of the

woman during her lifetime," (See later)

III-B THOMAS HUNT -Received "400 acres adjacent to his now dwelling house,

Negro James, & my horse, troopers saddle & bridle & all my trooping arms"

(Elizabeth _______) -Thomas died by 16 May 1711 when his inventory was ordered. It was made on 6 July 1711 by WILLIAM

EDMONDS & HENRY BEDINGFIELD and returned by ELLZA HUNT. It included all the personal items his father had left him (28)

ELIZABETH married next, by 5 April 1713, JOHN JONES, for on this date they, as administrators of THOMAS HUNT, signed a disbursement to JAMES ELLICO (ELLIS??) for his wife's part.(29)

ISSUE: only one known

IV-A __________ HUNT - married JAMES ELLICO (ELLIS??)

(A JAMES ELLIS was listed in the 1699 Surry Co. tax as living with WILLIAM HUNT. (5))

7

III-C JOHN HUNT - Received "my now dwelling plantation with all the land between

TANYARD's BRANCH & OSTIN'S BRANCH (Austin's ??)

This seems to be the land that JOHN HUNT still owned in the 1732 patent of WILLIAM EDMUNDS (27) This land fell into Albermarle Parish in 1738 and in Sussex County in 1756.

(Elizabeth Green) - Married by 1749 will of her father, WILLIAM GREEN (30) and that of NATHANIEL GREEN who listed legacies to: JOHN HUNT JR., WILLIAM HUNT & BENJAMIN HUNT (31)

(Faith Parker) This was the name of his wife in his will.

JOHN HUNT dated his will October 1759 Inventory returned by FAITH HUNT & WILLIAM HUNT, April 1760. RICHARD PARKER MADE THE INVENTORY. He named his wife, FAITH, sons: BENJAMIN, JOHN, JUNIOR, WILLIAM, BURRELL, and daughters: BETTY & MARY. Witnesses: THOS. PETERS, JR., JOHN EDMUNDS, GRAY EDMUNDS, JOHN PETERS, & WM, BUCKHANNON. Recorded Sussex Co., VA (32)

III-A WILLIAM HUNT - He was born by 1683 for he was of tithable age (over 16) in his

father's household in Surry Co, VA, in 1700 (5) He died intestate

by 10 April 1727 (33)

(Sarah _________) - SARAH HUNT was the Administratrix of his estate and as such returned his inventory on 10 April 1727, It was made by

RICHARD PARKER, EDWARD PENINTON, & CURTIS LAND and recorded 19 April

1727,(33) On 15 May 1728 SARAH GOODWIN & JOHN GOODWIN were listed as

administrators of William's estate.(34) On 13 April 1736 SARAH GOODWIN was listed

as the mother of HENRY HUNT in his deed to JOHN ALLEN.(35)

In the 1712-14 will of HENRY WYCHE of Surry Co he listed, "to daughter, SARAH, a cow & calf to her son, HENRY, a cow & calf, the male to his father & the female to him, the male for the trouble in looking after it."(36) Had his daughter married this William Hunt and had a son HENRY by this date ???

WILLIAM HUNT III was first found in records in the 1700 tithable list in Surry Co. in the household of his father, WILLIAM II. He continued in his household up through 1703, the last available tithable record (5) in the 1704 Quit Rent tax he was not listed, indicating he was not living on land of his own (25)

In the 1711 will of his father he was listed first and was left, "200 acres adjacent to where he now lives & 1 Negro woman, KATE, but my wife to have use of the woman during her lifetime."(17) (This evidently meant that Wm. III was already living on the land now willed to him - see later)

On 12 November 1718 WILLIAM HUNT patented 1,120 acres in Surry Co. on the Southwest side of the Nottoway River, adjacent to HUNTING QUARTER SWAMP & MAJOR WILLIAM HUNT (of the other Hunt line). This was land that had never been patented before, and in 1756 became Sussex Co. (37) Was this the 1,120 acre "Survey" made in 1707 for a WILLIAM HUNT ?? (22-a) Why so late being patented?

19/20 May 1719 WILLIAM HUNT (no wife signed) deeded CURTIS LAND of Surry Co., for 10 Lbs., 300 acres on the South side of the Nottoway River in the PARISH OF LAWNS OR LYONS CREEK, being part of a patent for 1,120 acres granted said William Hunt12 Nov. 1718. He signed the deed and it also stated that he was of LYONS CREEK PARISH (Lawn's Creek Parish (38) Wit: THOS COCKE & E. GOODRICH.

On 20 September 1720 WILLIAM HUNT (no wife signed) deeded to NICHOLAS BUSH, both of Surry Co., for 35 Lbs., "a certain plantation of land which was left to me, the said Hunt, by the last will and testament of WILLIAIM HUNT, MY FATHER, containing exactly 200 acres situate & lying.in the OUTWARD PRECINCT of Surry Co. near the Nottoway River" Wit. HOWELL EDMONDS, WM. ROSE, JR., RICHARD PARKER. William signed the deed. (39)

Why didn't a wife sign the above 2 deeds? She was living. Were they to husbands of his sisters or to husbands of unknown daughters?

9

We know that by 1711 he was living in "the OUTWARD PRECINCT of Surry Co. near the Nottaway River on 200 acres that his father left him and that he sold this 200 acres in 1720 to BUSH. Did he move to a new home? We also know that he had a patent for 1,120 acres in 1718 and that he sold 200 acres of this in 1719 to LAND, at which time he was listed as of LYON'S/LAWN'S CREEK PARISH. This left him 920 acres from his 1718 patent.

His eldest son, HENRY HUNT, inherited 920 acres as "heir at law" and sold it all: 400 acres to MOSES JOHNSON in 1732, deeded by THOMAS HUNT, HENRY HUNT b AGNES, his wife. (40) 520 acres to JOHN ALLEN in 1736, deeded by HENRY HUNT & AGNES his wife, & SARAH GOODWIN, his mother" (35) Thus all of William III's land passed out of the Hunt name.

ISSUES: Only ones known

IV-A HENRY HUNT - Born about 1700. Inherited father's land as "heir at law"

(35) To Brunswick Co., VA and North Carolina see later.

IV-B THOMAS HUNT - Deeded, with Henry Hunt & Agnes, part of his father's 1718

patent to MOSES JOHNSON in 1732 (40) If age 21, then born by 1711.

No further records that are proved for him. Was it another generation, maybe a son, or it this THOMAS HUNT who was settled in North Carolina by 1750 when he witnessed the will of HENRY HUNT; and who left a will in Franklin Co., N.C. dated 27 Sept. 1790 listing issues JOHN, HENRY, HARDY, a SARAH HUNT, S, Grandchildren: LITTLEBERRY HUNT, HARBERT HUNT, JOSIAH MASSEY ? Supplement, by Kerr, p 109 Deed Book.2, p 255)

IV-A

HENRY HUNT - Born about 1700 in Surry Co., VA. Son of William HuntII and wife, Sarah ______(35) Died in Granville Co., N.C. (in part that later became

Franklin Co., NC, between 13 November 1750 and March of 1750/51, the date of and recording

date of his will (41)

(Agnes _______) -Married about 1720-25 as his 5th son, JAMES, was born in 1732. AGNES was his wife's name in a 1732 deed (40), in a 1736 deed (35), and in his wi11 (41)

His father died intestate and, according to available records, had at his death 920 acres of land. The following abstracts show that HENRY was his "heir at law" and that he deeded away all of this land by 1736. "17 May 1732, THOMAS HUNT, HENRY HUNT and AGNES, wife of HENRYI sold to MOSES JOHNSON 400 acres in Surry Co. Thomas signed and Henry made his mark." (40) (Deed damaged & hard to read. It is not allowed to be photocopied) "12 April 1736, HENRY HUNT, of LAWN'S CREEK PARISH, sold to JOHN ALLEN of SOUTHWARK PARISH, 520 acres SOUTH SIDE OF NOTTOWAY RIVER in LAWN'S CREEK PARISH, for 100 lbs., granted to WILLIAM HUNT, deceased, FATHER OF HENRY, on 12 November 1718 for 1,120 acres land descending to HENRY as heir-at-law. Rec. 16 June 1736," (35) (This deed also could not be photocopied)

He is next found in Brunswick Co., Va., when, on 6 July 1737, he as "Henry Hunt, planter, of Brunswick Co., VA," bought for 42 lbs 565 acres of land in that county from RALPH & HANNAH JACKSON - land on North side of Meherrin River adjacent land of THOMAS JACKSON & THOMAS SESSOM. (42) Henry & Agnes sold this land as 560 acres on 4 November 1742, for 80 Lbs. to LEMUEL/SAMUEL COCKE. Henry made his mark. (43)

On 15 February 1742/3 HENRY HUNT "of Brunswick Co., VA,"was deeded for 15 Lbs., 150 acres by WILLIAM JONES - land on North side of Tarr River adjacent Buffaloe Creek, Edgecombe Co., NC(44)

He soon moved to this new land in NC, for on 20 June 1744 "HENRY HUNT of Edgecombe Co., NC" was deeded an unknown acreage by JOHN POPE for 10 Lbs. r in Edgecombe Co., NC on North side Tarr River between mouth of Buffaloe Creek & Busbie's Ford & adjacent to the River, as by patent to Pope 26 July 1743 (45) This is believed to have been 300 acres, for on 10 March 1747, HENRY HUNT sold to DAVID KELLY of Brunswick Co,, Va., for 20 LBS. 300 acres on N. side of Tarr River, part of land granted JOHN POPE 26 July, 1743. Wit: CHRISTIAN BISHOP, WILLIAM SOUTHERLAND, & ALEXANDER SOUTHERLAND (46)

The part of Edgecombe Co., NC, that Henry Hunt owned land in became Granville Co. in 1746, Bute Co. in 1764, and Franklin Co. in 1779.

Henry Hunt "of Granville Co., NC A on 29 Sept. 1749, was deeded 100 acres by JAMES MATHEWS, JR., for 6 Lbs. - land on North side Tarr River, being part of 480 acres granted Mathews on 25 March 1749. Wit: MOSES SMITH, THOMAS COOKS, ALEXANDER SOUTHERLAND. (47) On 29 Sept, 1749 Henry Hunt witnessed a deed of JAMES MATHEWS, JR., TO MOSES SMITH FOR LAND ADJACENT THAT SOLD TO HENRY HUNT (48)

11

Henry Hunt was listed with 4 polls in the 1750 Granville Co., N.C, Tax list of LEMUEL LANIER'S DISTRICT (49) There were 83 taxpayers in this district, Henry Hunt was listed 32nd and a THOMAS HUNT was 15th with only 1 poll. The names from THOMAS HUNT to HENRY HUNT were WM. MAINERD, KINNEY WILLIAMS, WM. JACKSON, JOHN PERRY, THOS. THARINTON, JULIUS ALFORD, ABNER GRAY, JOHN DUNKEN, WM. SMITH, JOHN BISHOP, ARTHAMISUS THOMAS, MANUEL EARP, JOHN SULLIVANT, ROBT. SMITH, JOSEPH BRANTLEY, ARTHUR WEST. - then came HENRY HUNT, and following were: PARSON RACKLEY, ROBT, SOUTHERLAND, ROBT. CADO (Cade?), JOHN BOOKER, WM. JONES, _____SMITH, _____ EL LANIER, HENRY JOY, WM. STACY, BROTHERD TRUELOVE, JOHN GOLDEN, JAMES ROSSI ANTHONY RACKLEY, JOHN RACKLEY, JOHN JEFFERERS, WM. FERRY, WM. WILDER, ROBT. SANDERS, BENJA. ARRINDALLE, JOSEPH JEFFERS, WM. PARISH, JOHN MOONEY, THOS SMITH, ETC.

Henry Hunt evidently kept the 150 acres he got in 1742/43 and the 100 acres he got. in 1749. In his will he left his son, GEORGE, his home land and his son, JAMES, the land above his home land. In 1789 GEORGE HUNT sold 140 acres to JAMES HUNT (50) This was evidently Henry's home and the boundaries given placed it on the North side of Tarr River at the South side of Buffalo Creek. In 1796 JAMES HUNT and his wife, MARY, sold this land, plus the land his father left him, plus additional land he had bought - to HENRY G. WILLIAMS (51). The bounds given in this deed included those given in the deed from George, so it seems that by this date all of Henry Hunt's land had been sold

HENRY HUNT made his will on 13 Nov. 1750, signed it with his mark, and it was recorded in March of 1750/51, Granville Go., NC (41) Executors were his wife, AGNES, and son, JAMES. Wit: JOHN MASSEY, WILLIAM HUNT, THOMAS (X) HUNT & JOHN THOMAS. Proved by WILLIAM HUNT. Bequeaths to his children were as listed below.

V-A HENRY HUNT - Got Negro Boy, Nero

V-B WILLIAM HUNT - Got Negro Girl, Patt

V-C JOHN HUNT - Got Negro Woman, Tammy

V-D GEORGE HUNT - Got "my plantation whereon I now dwell after decease of my

JAMES HUNT (Senior)

m. Mary __________

He was born 24 July 1732 (52) and listed 5th and as "under age 21" in his father's; Henry, will in 1750 (41) He was evidently born in or near Brunswick Co., Va., and was living with his father in 1750 in Granville Co., N.C, on land that fell into Bute Co. in 1764 and into Franklin Co, in 1779.

He was married by about 1754 for his 1st child was born 17 Sept. 1755, and the family records state that "JAMES & MARY" were the parents of all children therein listed.(52) Mary's maiden name has not yet been proven. It is possible that she was the "daughter, MARY HUNT, listed in the 1767 will of JOHN RACKLEY of Bute Co., NC. JAMES HUNT was an executor of this will; WILLIAM HUNT was a witness and another daughter was named SUSANNAH HUNT. John Rackley also listed "GRANDSON HENRY HUNT" who was to get the land he left his wife, after her death. (53) It is noted, however, that the only Rackley name given to a child of James & Mary was JOHN and he was the last of 12 children. Their first son was named Henry The names of James & Mary's children were very odd and should be leads to her maiden name. The name of his wife in his1803 will was Mary and so it is assumed that he married only once.

James was left, by his father's will, "the land above my plantation where I now live adjoining Bufalloe Creek and a Negro Boy, Cato."(41) James' brother, GEORGE, Was left his father's home plantation and he sold this land to James in 1789 (50) This land adjoined that left James and in 1796 James and Mary sold both these tracts, plus some of his own that joined it, to HENRY G. WILLIAMS (51). These deeds show that James & his family lived on land originally deeded his father.

In 1754 James Hunt was listed as #39 in CAPT, BENJAMIN SIMMS' Co, in the Muster of Granville Co., NC (54)

(Note) There was another James Hunt, wife Sarah, in Granville Co. but available records indicate he came from Northampton Co., NC after 1759 and lived up close to the Virginia line on land that stayed in Granville Co. when Bute Co. was formed in 1764.

From 1755 through 1760 a James Hunt appeared as a witness on deeds of various members of the Rackley family. HENRY HILL, WILLIAM EDWARDS, RICHARD CRUTCHFIELD also appeared as witnesses on these deeds and they all referred to land on the "North side Tarr River & Fox Swamp." (55, 56, 57, 58)

On 26 Oct. l761, James Hunt was deeded 160 acres by JOHN STALLION, for 12 lbs. -"land on the North side of the Tarr River on Buffalo Branch" which is part of 640 acres granted OSBORN JEFFERYS 1752, who sold it to said Stallion as "land at the upper line of land formerly belonging to HENRY HUNT'. Wit: WILLIAM & HENRY HUNT" (59)

1762 Granville Co Tax - Bare Swamp Dst. - No Hunt's listed (60a)

In 1762 James Hunt witnessed a deed of WILLIAM EDWARDS to JOHN BISHOP for land on both sides of Buffalo Creek. JAMES DENDY, RICHARD CRUTCHFIELD were witnesses also (60) In 1763 James Hunt's land was listed as adjacent to lands of:

13

JOHN BISHOP, JESSE BIRD, JOHN STALLING (STALLION?), THOMAS COOK, THOMAS MORGAN, WILLIAM SIMMONS, and original grant to WILLIAM EDWARDS (61)

In 1767 JAMES HUNT & PASSON RACKLEY were executors of the will of JOHN RACKLEY, recorded August 1769, Bute Co., N.C. He listed: to GRANDSON, HENRY HUNT; daughters: MARY HUNT, SUSANNAH HUNT, MARTHA SMITH, LUCRETIA ANTHONY, SETEVIAS RACKLEY, & SELETEE WHEELER; sons: PASON RACKLEY, MILLS RACKLEY, SAUL RACKLEY. Wit: WM. HUNT, JAMES DENBY, KEZIAH DENBY (63)

On 3 Nov. 1770 JOHN STALLINGS (STALLION?) deeded to JAMES HUNT, Planter, both of Bute Co., for 25 lbs. 100 acres in the Fork of the Buffalo Swamp - part of 1752 grant to OSBORN JEFFERIES and sold to Stallings 27 July 1761. Wit: JAMES DENBY, KEZIA DENBY, CHARITY DENBY (62) (Note - see 1761 deed from Stallion)

In the 1771 Bute Co., N.C. tax, HENRY HILL's DISTRICT, JAMES HUNT was listed with 4 Polls, which included 3 Negroes (63, 63-A). Names in this district correspond with those in above records.

On 4 Sept 1775 James Hunt was deeded 130 acres by DAVID & LUCRETIA ANTHONY & daughter, MARY ANTHONY, for 33/6/8 Proc. Money - land on South Prong of Ele Root Branch, conveyed to them by JOHN RACKLEY in 1764. (Note: this was John Rackley's daughter, as listed in his will above - note that her daughter was named MARY. John Rackley did not name his wife in his will and it is wondered if it was also MARY.) Deed reference - (64)

In the Minutes of the Bute County Court, February 1778, in CAPT MILNER's DISTRICT, the following HUNTS "took the State Oath": GEORGE, a HENRY, JAMES, a JOHN, MOSES NATHANIEL & THOMAS (65) These were the only Hunts listed and they were all in one district. - I cannot identify the Nathaniel & Thomas Hunt. These people took the oath so that they could "vote in the election". I do not know how old a person had to be to vote, but the only Moses Hunt that I know of was born in June of 1760 and so was at least age 18 in 1778, the Henry could have been his older brother, born in 1755 and George, James, & John must have been of the older generation & sons of Henry, Sr.

In 1779 Bute Co. was abolished and Franklin Co. was formed from the lower half - Warren Co. from the top half.

In 1780 James Hunt was listed as owning land adjacent that of MOSES BABB & near JACOB JONES & GEORGE HUNT (66)

In September 1786 the following were appointed to serve with ELIJAH DENBY, overseer of the road from Buffalo to the Granary in Franklin Co.: JAMES HUNT, JAMES HUNT, JUNIOR,

GEORGE HUNT, WILLIAM HUNT, MOSES HUNT, JOEL CONYERS, JACOB JONES, SILAS STALLIONS, JAMES DENBY, MOSES BABB, JESSE BIRD & JOSHUA RACKLEY (67)

In December 1785, JAMES HUNT & GEORGE HUNT were on the Franklin Co. Grand Jury, and HENRY HUNT was appointed for the next term (68)

14

On 6 March 1789 GEORGE HUNT deeded JAMES HUNT 140 acres on the North bank of the Tarr River. Wit: WILLIAM & SHADRACK HUNT (50) This was evidently the "home plantation" of Henry Hunt, Sr. that he willed to his son, George.

The 1790 Franklin Co., N.C. (Halifax District) census listed: JAMES HUNT 4 males over 16; 1 male under 16; 4 females; 1 slave (69) He is not found in the 1800 census for NC. In 1796 JAMES HUNT and his wife, MARY, deeded 575 acres of land to HENRY G. WILLIAMS and the boundaries included the land that his brother, George, had deeded him in 1789 - plus a large tract of land above and adjoining this land (51) Thus James seems to have sold all the land his father, Henry, had owned, plus that which he bought himself.

Note: In 1796 OLD TENNESSEE COUNTY was in NORTH CAROLINA but later in State of Tennessee and was broken up to form new counties. Part of Old Tennessee Co. went to form ROBERTSON Co., TENN.

On 19 July 1797 JAMES HUNT OF NORTH CAROLINA purchased 640 acres from the State of North Carolina in the then County of Tennessee. (70, 71) He moved to this new land and his will indicates that at least some of his younger children went with him.

JAMES HUNT (Senior) dated and signed his will on 22 August 1803 in Robertson Co., Tennessee. It was proved in February 1805. His executors were his sons, SION & JOHN. Witnesses were MILES KIRBY & JOHN HYDE. (72) He named his wife, MARY, and left her: Negroes: Martin, Nance, Sarah; 1/2 of stock, household furniture & cleared land & home during her life or widowhood and no longer; all my stock of hogs, 1 feather bed and furniture, one woman, Sarah, and all the money that is due me - this I leave her in lieu of any dower she may hereinafter claim. He listed all his children and left legacies to each (see list later). His will did not indicate that he had any deceased children.

His inventory was recorded on 13 April 1805 and included: 640 acres of land; 1 Negro man, 1 Negro Boy; 5 horses; 17 cattle; 70 hogs; 3 feather beds; 1 shotgun; 1 rifle; 1 linnen wheel; 1 cotton wheel; 2 pair chards; 1 Bible; 1 Hymn; 2 sermon books; & 4 volumes of Fletcher's Works (72-A)

JAMES HUNT, (JUNIOR) was called SR. in Georgia)

m. Jemima Carter

He was born 6 June 1762, (52, 72 ) evidently in Granville Co., N.C. on land that later fell into Bute Co, in 1764 and still later into Franklin Co, In 1779.

The first record for him as 'Junior' was in September of 1786 in Franklin Co., N.C, when the following Hunts were assigned by the County to work with ELIJAH DENBY, Overseerer, on the road from Buffalo Creek to the Granary: JAMES HUNT, JAMES HUNT, JUNIOR, GEORGE HUNT, WILLIAM HUNT, MOSES HUNT (67)

On 1 October 1787 JAMES HUNT & JOHN TEASLEY witnessed the deed of HUGH MCDONALD to MOSES HUNT in Wilkes Co., Ga. (73) So by this date it seems that James, Jr. had come to Georgia with his brother, Moses, and his sister Lucy Teasley & her husband, John.

He married JEMIMA CARTER on 11 November 1790, according to the 1850 "James Hunt Bible Records" (74). Other family records do not give her last name. (52) According to her 1860 census record she was born 1765-66 in Virginia, was 95 years old and had a personal estate valued at $10,500.00. She was in the household of her son SION HUNT (74-A). James Hunt, in his wi11, left his wife, Jemima, his homeplace, slaves, cattle, horses, etc, for her life (75). As will be seen later, the land was sold before 1860, and the 1832 inventory of James was only valued at $3,492,00 including 11 slaves, but no land (76). Was all her 'personal estate value' in 1860 an increased value of James' 1832 inventory? "JEMIMA HUNT died 7 January 1864 about 3 o'clock forenoon." In this same reference it was listed, " JEMIMA HUNT, supposed to be born 1772" (74) This reference, #74, is the "JAMES HUNT BIBLE", but since it was printed in 1850, it must have belonged to a later Hunt.

On 27 December 1791 JAMES HUNT bought, for 50 lbs, 300 acres in Elbert Co, on Coldwater Creek from HUGH MCDONALD & his wife I believe this became his home land and that part of it fell into Hart Co. when it was formed in 1853. (76-A, 76-B)

A James Hunt of Elbert County drew 2 blanks in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery (77)

The WILLIS HUNT DAY BOOK (52) has the following notation written under the record of James Hunt, Sr. & Mary's children's births: "These ages drawn of by James Hunt in Tennessee November the 11 day 1807 this the 28th of July 1850, by WILLIS HUNT". This fact, and the fact that the children's names correspond to those in the will of James Hunt, Senior, of Robertson Co., Tenn., prove the family connection with the Franklin Co, N.C. Hunts. James, Junior, must have gone to Tennessee shortly after his father died, copied family records, and his son, Willis, recopied them into his own record book.

17

An early tax record of Elbert Co., GA., after 1806 to about 1815, shows two tax lists. One listed "James Hunt of CAPT. MONTGOMERY's Dst., 200 acres on Coldwater Creek adjacent JOHN WALRAVEN." The other listed "James Hunt, CAPT HENDERSON's Dst., 240 acres on Coldwater Creek, granted BURTON & adjacent to John CARSON, and he had 4 slaves." (78)

Note: There was another James Hunt in Elbert Co., GA about 1815 - the son of Dr. RICHARDSON HUNT, but this James as living on the Savannah River at the mouth of Cedar Creek.

In the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery, JAMES HUNT, SENIOR, drew Lot 345 Dst. 2, of Early Co. He was listed as from Elbert Co. (79) It was granted to him as JAMES HUNT, SR. on 3 December 1821. (80) This lot was listed in his will.

The 1820 Elbert Co., GA Census listed him on page 172: JAMES HUNT, 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 2 males 18-26; 1 male 45 & over; 1 female under 10; female 10 to 16; 1 female 45 & over. (81)

In the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery he is listed as: JAMES HUNT, REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER - drew lot 274, Dst. 17, Muskogee Co. (82) It was granted him as JAMES HUNT, SENIOR, on 1 December 1837 (after his death). (83)

The above documented reference to James having served in the Revolutionary War is the ONLY record I have found. It does not say where or how he served. DAR records (84) say he served from Virginia. This may be true but they give no proof that the Virginia service records are for this James and there were 5 or 6 other James Hunts, some Juniors, and some from Virginia for whom these service records could have been.

JAMES HUNT, JUNIOR (SR.) died 23 March 1832. (52, 74) He made and signed his will on 8 February 1832, Elbert Co., GA., and it was proved there on 3 September 1832. (75) Executors were his sons, SION & WILLIS HUNT. Witnesses were J. A. TEASLEY, T. J. TEASLEY, and BENJAMIN TEASLEY. He left his homeplace, cattle, horses, slaves, etc. to his wife, JEMINA, for her life, and stated that he had already given a slave to each of his children. He left future gifts to them to the discretion of his wife. He left "part of the homeplace" to his son, HULLUM, and the "rest of the homeplace" to sons WILLIS & RICHARD CARTER who were also directed to care for their mother. He directed that the two lots he drew in the Land Lotteries were to be sold.

His inventory was dated 25 September 1832 and included 11 slaves, farm stock, tools, household furniture, BOOKCASE and BOOKS, for a total value of $3,492.00. (76)

In 1853 R. C. HUNT deeded to ALFRED TEASLEY 193 & 3/4 acres in Elbert Co., EXCEPT THE GRAVEYARD. (85) In 1855 WILLIS HUNT deeded to JAMES J. HUNT "land in the will of James Hunt left to JEMINA". (86) Both of these deeds were recorded in Elbert Co., however, Hart Co. was formed, partly from Elbert Co., in 1853 and it is stated that JAMES HUNT is buried "in a field in the Nuburg Community in Hart Co. near the Elbert Co. line. (87) As of 1987 the National Society Daughters of the Am. Rev. has NO record of his grave having been marked.

SION HUNT

Priscilla Kindree/Kendrick Thornton

Sion was born 1 February 1798, (52, 74, 90) in Georgia. He married on 31 July 1823 PRISCILLA THORNTON (74, 88) born 24 October 1803 and died 16 August 1846 (74, 90, 91) Her middle name was written as "Kindree" in the Hunt Bible (74) but is believed to have been Kendrick. She was the daughter of BENJAMIN & SARAH THORNTON of Elbert Co., Ga., who in his will left $900.00 to the "children of his deceased daughter, Priscilla Hunt, & left them a 1/9 th share of the remainder of my estate (l06)

Sion married last SARAH PENN on 7 May 1849. (74) She was born 10 May 1810 and died 3 July 1875. (90) No children

Sion Hunt was listed as a Lieut. in the Elbert Co. Militia from 29 August 1823 to 28 January 1825. (Card file, Ga. Archives)

In the 1860 Elbert Co., Ga., census, Summerville P.O. Dst., house and family #787 - stamped page 854 - he was listed:

Sion and Sarah were evidently both ill about the same time, as in his estate records there is a receipt from NANCY GAINES for $25.00 for "waiting on Sion & Sarah Hunt 6 months in their last illnesses (93)

Sion Hunt died 11 February 1875 (90) His will was dated 18 January 1872 and proved 3 March 1875, Elbert Co., Ga. He left "All my estate to FLEMING P. THORNTON" and directed him to pay his debts and the support of his wife, Sarah, and at her death to divide the residue among the legatees of his estate - they were not named (92) See the distribution of his estate under respective children (93)

His inventory was dated 6 March 1875. It listed: farm tools, stock, household items, including a BOOKCASE & BOOKS (those of his father?) The homeplace was valued at $1,000.00 and his other property was listed as: Lot 274 Muscogee Co. (his father's 1827 Land Lottery draw?) Lot 345 Lownds Co.; Lot 452 Thomas Co., Lot 179 Irwin Co. The total estate was valued at $2,006.45. (94, 95)

The sale of the perishable property was on 26 March 1875 (96) The sale of the homeplace was on 4 January 187_, recorded 8 Nov. 1878, as 200 acres on Little Coldwater Creek - sold to J. W. THORNTON for 81,125.00 by F. P. THORNTON, executor. (97,98)
