We do not "own" the data on our ancestors that is found in the public domain, i.e., birth, census, marriage, death records and other published documents. However, we do own the private family stories that have been given to us, along with the format in which we choose to place this "public" data. Therefore, extract the data that you need to supplement your own family research, but do not copy or use the entire formated data. This would be a copyright infringement, and you would not want to suffer the consequences of that. If there is something in any of my family histories that you would like to use in a publication, you MUST get written permission from me. Having said all this, if you want the data to compile histories to hand down to your children or grandchildren, God Bless YOU and yours!

John Tomlinson (1750-1801)

GGGG-Grandfather of Rachel Mavis Tomlinson-Mims

John Tomlinson born about 1750 in either NC or SC, died 1801 Bulloch Co., GA. John was a Revolutionary Soldier in SC. His father, William, furnished supplies to the Revolutionary causes. There is a question as to whether this William and John are the same ones who witnessed land transactions in Onslow Co., NC. Research along this line is continuing.
In 1770, John married Rebecca Lucretia Hardeman (Hardyman/Hardiman), daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Hardeman.
John & Rebecca had the following known children:

  1. William (1781SC-1866GA), m. Nancy Register (7 known children), Partner - Elizabeth Sirmans (1 known child)

On 9 April 1804, William married Nancy Register, daughter of John (RS) & Dorcas (Rowell) Register. Nancy was born in 1782 in Sampson Co., NC; died 1873, Clinch Co., GA.

William & Elizabeth Sirmans (unwed, Elizabeth later married Dred Newburn) had the following child:
  1. William Sirmans Tomlinson, Jr. (1822GA-1894GA), m. Matilda Giddens (8 known children)

Harris Tomlinson was born 18 Feb 1808 in Bulloch Co., GA, son of William and Nancy (Register) Tomlinson. He died 1 Jul 1867, Echols Co., GA. He was reputed to be a large man, 6 ft. 7 in. tall, and weighing over 300 lbs. (Note: Later genrations of Tomlinson's were tall - this author's father was 6'4", and a nephew is 6'6" and still growing.)
Harris served as First Sergeant in the Indian War, 1840-1841, under Captain J. Knight's Georgia Militia.
It is probable that Harris built the first Tomlinson home in Echols Co., GA. (If so, this old log house was the outbuildings on the farm where the author spent her first 12 years. Who among us realize the history represented in the buildings where we may dwell at any given time?) - Land Records
Harris married Rebecca Driggers in 1830, Bulloch Co., GA. Rebecca was the daughter of William & Emily "Millie" Lastinger Driggers. She was born 29 August 1811 in Bulloch Co., GA, and died 3 April 1878 in Echols Co., GA.

John [4] was born 2 March 1832 in either Ware or Clinch Co., GA, son of Harris and Rebecca (Driggers) Tomlinson.
John served six months as Third Lieutenant in the CSA, under Captain James Staten. He was elected to public office, which exempted him for further survice. He died 12 August 1905 in Echols Co., GA. on what was called the Tomlinson Old Place (not to be confused with the Tharp Tomlinson Place, which was about 3 miles north-west). He was buried at Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church (also known as Cow Creek), the family church.
John married Mary Stalvey about 1855 in Clinch Co., GA.
Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Stalvey, Sr. & Susan Turner. Mary was born 1841, died 1935, and is buried beside her husband.
Mary grew up in present day Clinch Co., GA. Her parents are buried in the Stalvey & Hilliard Cemetery, a family graveyard on this property. The old decorative fence that surrounds Ben Stalvey & his two wives is still standing. The family "who cared" placed new tombstone markers on their graves.

Benjamin Stalvey Tomlinson was born 16 Jan 1882, in a log house in Echols County, GA, between Statenville and Mayday. It is believed that his grandfather, Harris Tomlinson built this log house in the early 1800s. When Ben was a small boy, his father built the "Old Tomlinson Place", beside the old log house, which became the outbuildings.
On 11 March, 1900, just after Ben turned 18 years old, he married 17 year old Rachel Luther Howell. She was born 29 March 1882, Echols Co., GA, the daughter of William Riley & Laura (Prine/Perrin) Howell. Luther was placed in the guardianship of her uncle Benjamin "Benny" Prine after her father fatally shot himself while rabbit hunting. It is believed the gun accidentally fired when he climbed a fence.
Luther grew up mostly in South Carolina. Her mother married "Grandpa" Jones about 1884, moved to Smoaks SC, where she lived until her death in 1928. "Grandpa" Jones had at least one son by his first marriage, named Tommy, b. abt 1880. (Note: The author has a family photo of Grandpa, Laura, Tommy & Rachel Luther, taken in the late 1800s.) This line of research continues.
Luther had asthma, but the cause of death is unknown. She died 10 Feb 1930. Benjamin died 27 Apr 1968. Most of this family are buried at Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Echols Co., GA.
Benjamin & Luther had the following children:
  1. Willie Ausbin (1901GA-?GA), m. Maggie Terrell (6 known children)
  2. Isbin (1903GA-1989GA), m. (1) Elouise Roberts (2 children); m. (2) Louise Webb
  3. Benjamin Sherman, Jr. (1905GA-1972FL), m. Narcissa Cindrella Touchton (10 children)
  4. Perman (1908GA-?GA), m. Gladys Jordan (3 known children)
  5. Lula Mertice (1910GA-Living), m. Lee Roy Strickland (2 children)
  6. Marie (1912GA-1998), m. Leland Herring (3 known children)
  7. Lloyd (1914GA-?GA), m. Eunice Sheppard (3 known children)
  8. Lamar M. "L.M." (1916GA-Living), m. Alberta Stalvey (12 known children)
  9. Wilson (1918GA-1982FL), m. (1) Neva Selph; m. (2) Karen Rutherford Garrick Lowrie (from Scotland) (4 children)
  10. Jefferson Davis "J.D." (1919GA-Living), m. Jonnie Lee Moore (4 children)
  11. Magruda (c.1924GA-1998), m. Margaret Wilson; (3 children)
  12. Ralph (1928GA-1928GA)

Benjamin Sherman Tomlinson, Jr. was born 9 August 1905 at the Tomlinson Old Place in Echols Co., GA. By the time he was grown, he stood 6 ft. 4 in. tall. It is interesting to note that he was given "Jr.", even though his father's middle name was Stalvey. They both used the initials "B.S." when signing their names. Sherman was the son of Benjamin Stalvey, Sr. & Rachel Luther (Howell) Tomlinson.
On 22 January 1928, Sherman married Narcissa Cindrella Touchton, a childhood classmate and sweetheart. "Narciss" was born 9 October 1905 in Echols Co., GA, the d/o Levin G. & Mary Lee McMillan Touchton.
(See TOUCHTON Family History)
With the exception of a few months, Sherman was always a farmer, first in Echols Co., GA, then in Suwannee Co., FL.
Sherman died 17 January 1972, and is buried at Clayland Baptist Church Cemetery, about a mile from the Tomlinson Home (known previously as "The Old George Goff Place").
Sherman & Narcissa had 10 children, nine still living:
