For our family, this is where it all began. Our grandfather, as we knew him, was Charles David Powell. Grandpa Powell was born as Charles David Holland on January 30, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Nellie Ellen Lantz and Charles M. Holland. This photo is the three of them together about 1908. We have record (from an address written on the back of a photo) that they were living at 10706 Fulton, Chicago, Illinois in January of 1910. (This address has since changed to 10706 Langley). We do not know exactly how long they lived at this address. This area is also called the Pullman District. Sometime between 1914 and 1916, Nellie and Charles moved to Michigan and also divorced. We have not yet located the divorce documents.
On September 12, 1916, Nellie (Lantz) Holland married Henry Sherwood Powell. They married in Lake City, Michigan and resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We have record that they resided at 32 Evergreen Street, Wyoming, Kent County, Michigan in 1920 as well (census record). According to Grandpa Powell's Application for Marriage License, he was still living at this address in 1928 (except he listed it as 32 Evergreen Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan).
Charles David (Holland) Powell & Elsie Sarah (Brisbin) Powell lived at 15000 Hall Road, Ravenna, Michigan. This is where they raised their family and lived until the end of their lives. Charles was a machinist by trade. He enjoyed working in his yard and gardens after retirement. He died of terminal congestive heart failure on August 21, 1981 while a resident of the Brookhaven Medical Care Facility in Muskegon, Michigan. His wife, Elsie Sarah (Brisbin) Powell followed him in death on November 26, 1983 at Grant Hospital Emergency Room. Funerals for each of them were through the McKinley Funeral Home and they were both buried in Hilton Cemetery , Casnovia Township, Michigan.
