Andrew S Long and Alabama C Jones

Andrew S Long and Alabama C Jones

Andrew S. Long was the fourth child of Henry Long and Rachel Anderson. He was born about 1820 in Tennessee. We have no indication of what his middle name was. He appears to be with his parents in the census of 1830 in Bedford County, Tennessee, and 1840 in Jackson County, Alabama.

Andrew S. Long is found in the 1850 census of Panola County, Texas:

According to an article in a history of Panola County, Texas, Alabama Caroline Jones was born in Alabama in 1833, the eleventh child of John Adam Crain Jones, Sr. and Martha W., maiden name unknown. The Jones family tradition says that they lived in Talladega County, Alabama, from 1828 until after 1840. A brother, younger than Alabama Caroline, married in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, in August of 1843, which may help locate the family at that time.

The Long family had many members in Talladega County, Alabama, in the 1840s. Andrew may have met his wife there. They married January 10, 1849, according to Alabama Long's Confederate pension application.

The Panola County tax rolls show Andrew S. Long paid one poll tax in that county for 1851 and tax on 1 horse on the 1853 tax roll.

The couple probably made the move to Caldwell County in the winter of 1853. On February 1, 1854, Andrew S. Long bought 175 acres of land on the Sandy Fork of Peach Creek from Rebecca G. Shepperd of Bastrop County. That was half of a tract that she and her husband, John, had bought from Andrew's brother Sam the previous September.

On 17 May 1855, Andrew sold 100 acres on the Sandy Fork of Peach Creek to his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Joel A Taylor. It was the northeast corner of the 1280 acre E. Osborn survey. That same day, Andrew sold his brother Sam 170 acres off the southeast corner of the same E. Osborn survey. Andrew was involved in other deed transactions in Caldwell County in 1856 and 1857.

Andrew Long has not been located in the 1860 census. His Confederate service record places him in the Galveston-Houston area for 1863-1864. The tax rolls for Harris County are missing for 1860-64. Andrew S. Long is listed there as owner of 125 acres of land plus personal property for 1865-1868.

In the application for pension, R. L. McGinnis, aged 61, testified that he had "known Mrs. Alabama C. Long, widow of Andrew S. Long since 1860. Knowed her for forty three years, at Spring Station in Harris County, Texas. Andrew S. Long enlisted in Capt. Clepper's Company, and in Col. Elmore's Regiment...in 1862 and served in Galveston and in Houston Texas."

Confederate records show A. S. Long on the Register of General hospital Houston Texas with acute dysentery June 13 - June 20 1863. He enlisted at Galveston in Company C, the 20th Texas Infantry, Elmore's Regiment on 1 February 1864 as substitute for Abner Roberts. A. S. Long was due pay of Abner Roberts from June 30 1863.

July 1864 he is listed as Sick - In hospital (Va. Pt.) July 26, 1864.

Oct 1864 Furloughed time extended to Nov 15/64.

Nov 1864 Furlough expired time extended to Dec 1/64

Abner Roberts may have been part of the Roberts family that settled so heavily in Caldwell County.

The tax roll of Harris County, Texas, shows Andrew S. Long paid taxes from 1865 through 1868.

In 1870, we find Andrew Long in the census of Harris Co.

The tax roll of Grimes County, Texas, does not show A. S. Long in 1877, but in 1878 he was taxed on one carriage, 2 horses, 2 cattle and 3 hogs. In 1879 he was taxed on 1 horse and 35 mules.     In the 1880 census, Grimes County, Tx shows:

Andrew S. and Alabama C. Long had at least ten children, and probably more. It is likely that they had at least one child between 1850 and 1856. The children known by name were:
  1. Sarah, born about 1856
  2. William Henry, born in April 1859
  3. Rosine, born about 1861
  4. Andrew, born about 1862
  5. Samuel G., born in February of 1863 or 65
  6. M. Josephine, born about 1866
  7. Joseph, born about 1868
  8. M. E., born about 1870

  10. Minerva, born about 1874
In June of 1903, Alabama C Long applied for a pension based on the service of her husband, Andrew S. Long in the Confederate army. She stated that she married Andrew S. Long on January 10th 1849, but did not say where. She made the application in Kaufman County, saying she had lived there for fifteen years.

Unexpectedly, the 1900 census of Kaufman County does not show Alabama C Long. Her son appears to be in Justice Pc't #1 16-18 June:

    In Montgomery County, Texas, S G Long married S J Golden 27 Aug 1891.

Mrs. A. C. Long died in Corsicanna, Navarro County, Texas, on 1 February, 1904. Her age was given as 70 years, 10 months 25 days. She died at 306 North 10th Street. She was probably staying with a family member.
