The Ancestors of Berry Towles Canote

The Towles Family

The Towles family first came to America sometime in the 1650s or 60s when Henry Towles set foot in the then English colony of Virginia. Of his family back in England we know little. We only know he arrived here from Liverpool, a place his family maintained contact with for several years shipping livestock and other goods. Henry was appointed constable of Accomac County in 1681. His occupation was always listed as planter. He married Ann Stokeley, daughter of Jamestown pioneer John Stokeley.

The Canote Family

It is believed that the Canote name was originally spelled Knodt, and was Anglicized to Canote in the late 18th century. A Henry Knodt was naturalized in Philadelphia in 1753. This name later appears in the area of Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland. John Canote first appears in the records of Hagerstown, around the 1780s. His son Jacob was resident in Augusta Co., Virginia in the 1790s and both moved to Madison Co., Kentucky around 1800.
