Introduction
|
|
||||||||||||||||||||||
Esslingen is a district (Kreis) in the centre of Baden-Württemberg,
Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north
clockwise) Rems-Murr,
Göppingen,
Reutlingen,
Böblingen and the district-free city Stuttgart. The district
dates back to the Oberamt Esslingen,
which was created when the previously free imperial city Esslingen became
part of Württemberg in 1803. After several changes over the next century, it was
converted into a district in 1938.
Additionally, it was enlarged by adding several municipalities from the
neighboring Amtsoberamt Stuttgart, Oberamt Schorndorf,
Kirchheim unter
Teck and Göppingen. In 1973,
the district was merged with the district Nürtingen
(without Grafenberg). In 1975, two municipalities from the district Böblingen
were added to give the district today's borders. The district
is cut into two halves by the river Neckar. The west part is part of the Filder plain, while the east is part of the
mountains of the Swabian Alb (Schwäbische Alb). The coat of arms (as seen above), shows the
imperial eagle taken from the coat of arms of the city of Esslingen. The
checkered diamonds in the bottom are the symbol of the Dukes of Teck, and the horn on the breast of the eagle is the
symbol of the Counts of Urach. Both symbols were
taken from the coat of arms of the district of Nürtingen,
as the two families played a mayor role in the
history of the area. |

DESCRIPTION: Esslingen am Neckar is a city in the Stuttgart
Region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, capital of the District of Esslingen as well as the largest city in the
district. It is located on the river Neckar, about 14 km south-east of Stuttgart city center. The surrounding regions are
also mostly developed around the city of Esslingen. The first human settlements root back
to about 1000 B.C. Esslingen was first mentioned in 777 as Ezelinga
in the last will of Abbot Fulrad from Saint-Denis (near Paris), the chaplain of Pippin and Charlemagne. He bequeaths the church sixth cell
upon the river Neckar to his monastery Saint-Denis. He also brought the
bones of Saint Vitalis to Esslingen, which made it a target for
pilgrimage and led to its growth.
Around 800 Esslingen becomes a market
town, its market rights
being certified in 866. In 949–953 it appears in the possession of Liudolf,
Duke of Swabia.
Esslingen received city rights in 1229, and was first mentioned as an Imperial city in 1298.
The time between the 13th century and 16th
century saw many conflicts between the Free Imperial City and the State of Badenwuerttemberg. About half the population lost their lives in the
Thirty Years War between 1618 and 1648 by either hungar
or epedemics. Esslingen lost its independence as an Imperial city in 1803, becoming part of the Duchy of Württemberg. The beginning of 19th Century was characterized
by industrialisation for Esslingen. A glove
manufacturing industry, a food proceesing industry,
a textile industry and a metal working industry were started. On 20 November
1845 the first train from Cannstatt to Esslingen
was introduced. In 1945, during World
War II, Esslingen was
occupied by U.S.
soldiers, thereby being spared much of the damage caused by World
War II. After the Second World War, about 47,000
people (mostly refugees and displaced persons from the Eastern Germany) moved
into Esslingen. There were settlements in Oberesslingen
and Zollberg, in order to overcome the shortage of
housing. In 1973 Esslingen am
Neckar became seat of the newly enlarged county of Nürtingen
now called county of Esslingen. |

DESCRIPTION: The village of Hegensberg was originally located in the Duchy of Württemberg, (formerly known as Wirtemberg). Württemberg,
became a Kingdom after the
fall of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
Its traditional capital was Stuttgart.
Historically Hegensburg conflicted with
Esslingen-Am-Neckar as that city was not a part of Wurttemburg. Hegensberg was
closely tied to nearby Oberesslingen because both
belonged to Wurttemberg. There are still some relicts in modern
Esslingen reflecting those old conflicts. One example is the "Hegensberger Kirchweg" (churchway of Hegensberg), now
called Potsdamer Straße,
a path connecting Hegensberg in a straight line to
the church of Oberesslingen. Hegensberg and Oberesslingen both belonged to Württemberg but were
separated by Esslingen territory. Thus
the Kirchweg was created as an exterritorial zone
allowing the people of Hegensberg to visit the
church in Oberesslingen without having to cross the
border twice on a distance of one mile.
The closest airport to Hegensberg is in Stuttgart,
located 10.6 km to the south west.
