Introduction

Südwestpfalz is a district (Kreis) in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from west clockwise) Saarpfalz, the district-free city Zweibrücken, the districts Kaiserslautern and Bad Dürkheim, the district-free city Landau (the Taubensuhl/Fassendeich forest part of the city), Südliche Weinstraße, and the French département Bas-Rhin. The district-free city Pirmasens is completely surrounded by the district.

The district was created in 1818 as the Landkommisariat Pirmasens. During the communal reforms of 1968-72 several changes were made to the district. In 1969 the neighboring district Bad Bergzabern was dissolved and some part of it was added, while other municipalities were incorporated into the city Pirmasens. In 1972 the district Zweibrücken was dissolved and added into the district Pirmasens, which in 1997 renamed itself to Südwestpfalz.

Family History Notes

The Blau, Born, Bracher, Forster, and Ilges families lived in that area of Germany now located within the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Sudwestpflaz.  The Born, Bracher and Forster families lived near Hornbach and the Blau, Ilges families were associated with the community of Thaleischweiler.

Georg Bracher was probably born Hornbach around 1650.  His son Johann George Bracher was born at Hornbach in 1676.  In 1693 Johann George married Susanna Margaretta Forster Born the daughter of Theodor Born and Kunigunda Forster who was born at Hornbach about 1652.  Johann George and Susanna Margaretta had at least 14 known children 7 of which were born at Hornbach between 1694 and 1703.  The Bracher family moved to nearby Rimschweiler around 1704.

Johann Paul Ilges was born at Thaleischweiler around 1706.  He first married a local woman named Anna Margaretha with whom he produced 5 known off-spring.   In 1745 he married a second time to Maria Catharina Blau, daughter of Nicolas Blau, and also native of Thaleischweiler.  Four children were born of this union two of whom were born at Thaleischweiler between 1745 and 1747.  In 1750 Johann Paul and Maria Catharina left Thaleischweiler and sailed to America with five children aged 3 to 19 years old.

Peter, as a part of the former Bliesgau (Diocese of Metz). Up to the 14th century the monastery  at Hornbach maintained a far-reaching influence and provided an important impetus for the development in Upper Lorraine.       In the fall of 1119 Emperor Henry V. visited Hornbach on the way from Strasbourg to Metz.  At this time he gave the Monastery the power to to design and circulate coins of the realm.  This practice continued until 1230.  By this time  power of the monastery but already begun to decline.  Am 16. On 16April 1352 erhielt Hornbach wie die Nachbarstadt Zweibrücken die Stadtrechte. April 1352 Hornbach became a part of the neighbouring town of Zweibrücken.      By 1548 only three monks were left living in the monastery at Hornbach.  It finally closed in 1557 as a result of the Reformation.  The buildings and other assests of the monastery were subsequently used to establish a institution for the training of clergy and as preparatory school for university studies.   Because of the turmoil of the Thirty Years War  the school relocated to Zweibrucken in 1631.

The oldest parts of the church are from the first half of the 13th Century (probably before 1239). The current layout dates from the 15th Century.

DESCRIPTION OF GEN-SITE(s): The town of Thaleischweiler-Fröschen is the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") of Thaleischweiler-Fröschen.    It is situated on the western edge of the Palatinate forest, approx. 7 km north of Pirmasens.

Thaleischweiler is first mentioned in 1237 by the name Eiswilre then located in Leiningen.  After the death of the ruler Frederick Leininger in 1237 this locality came under the control of his eldest son Frederick III who also inherited, the castle Grebinstein (Gräfenstein) along with the villages of Roth Albin (Rodalben Merz), Merichishalbin, as well as Eiswilre (Thaleischweiler).  In 1295 Fröschen is mentioned in records for the first time as the hamlet of Froßauwe then found in the area of Deux Ponts.

Both communities are far older than the first time they appeared in the local records that survived the last 1000 years. Thaleischweiler was already a community as early as the Frankish Empire when it was located within the southernmost part of the Kaiserslautern within the diocese of Worms. This area also included the current villages of Thaleischweiler, Thal- and Höhfröschen, and Höheinöd. Together with Herschberg these towns formed the parish of Thaleischweiler which is still in existence today. Thaleischweiler emerged as a community as early as the 7th century it was also commonly referred to Thalfröschen as between the 9th and 12th centuries.

During the 12th century the villages of Thalieschweier and Fröschen were part of the imperial fiefdom of the Counts of Saarbrucken.   After the death of Count Simon Saarbrücker I in 1182 the villages were split between the Count’s two sons Simon II and Heinrich Graf I.  The border between the two districts ran along the Pfarrgasse today at City Hall, from where the main road to the east to Herschberger Street and from there south to the old mill, (Faüstermuhle), which remained in the possession of the Graftschaft Zweibrücken. Thaleischweiler and Fröschen were almost extinct.  Through immigration they were eventually re-populated by immigrants from Switzerland.  After six centuries of division the borders between the two towns became insignificant and eventually no longer existed.  Since that time Thaleischweiler was also under the occupation of the Palatinate by the French in the years 1793/94, and continued to belong to France until 1814.

The many years of turmoil and foreign rule were finally followed by long years of peace, in which the two places, Thaleischweiler and Fröschen, could flourish freely.  They were finally under a united dominion within the state of Beide Orte bilden seit der Zugehörigkeit zu Bayern (1816 – 1935) und seit der Verwaltungsgliederung im Jahr 1818 eine politische Gemeinde, mit einer gemeinsamen Bürgermeisterei, der auch Höhfröschen angehörte.
