INTRODUCTION

     Hopkins County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It was formed in 1807 as an outgrowth of Henderson County. As of 2000, the population was 46,519. Its county seat is Madisonville. The county is named for General Samuel Hopkins, an officer in both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and later a Kentucky legislator and U.S. Congressman.

     Hopkins County is part of the Western Coal Fields region of Kentucky.   Adjacent counties are: Webster County (northwest);  McLean County (northeast); Muhlenberg County (southeast); Christian County (south);  and Caldwell County (southwest).
