HISTORY / DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION:

North Farnham Parish (Old Rappa., 1683-1692; Richmond, 1692-), on the north side of the Rappa. River, and South Farnham Parish (Old Rappa., 1683-1692; Essex, 1692-), on the south side of the Rappa. River, were created from Farnham Parish in 1683. Lunenburg Parish was created from North Farnham in 1732. South Farnham embraced all of Essex lying southeast of the line between it and St. Anne's Parish.  Old Rappahannock County became extinct in 1692 when it was divided into Essex and Richmond Counties. North Farnham Parish fell wholly into Richmond County at the division.

The Farnham Episcopal Church built in 1737, named for the parish which was established in 1683. While commonly referred to now as Farnham Church, it is more precisely called North Farnham Church of Richmond County.  In the decades following the Revolution, the interior of Farnham Church fell into ruins. During the War of 1812, the church was bombarded. In 1834, however, after a long period without a minister the Rev. George W. Nelson was called as rector, and after his untimely death six years later, the Vestry could declare that, "By his Pastoral hand this Congregation was collected, and under his auspices our once crumbling and desecrated Church was built up anew."  During the War Between the States the Church was again partially destroyed, and even used as a stable, but was restored again in 1873.  However a fire in 1887 left only the walls standing.  Eventually the building as it is today was restored in 1921.
