The only ancestor
known of this lineage is my 12th great-grandmother Maria Bannheurs. Maria was probably born circa 1555 in that
area of present day Germany
now known as the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Sometime before 1580 she married Hans Haas. Of this union one child is known to have
been born. Maria died in 1594 and probably
lived out the remainder of her days in or near the town of Eningen. My lineage
continues through Maria
Hasen(Haas) is the daughter of Maria Banheurs. Maria was born in the village of Dettingen
an der Erms which is located about 6 kilometers from the
aforementioned Eningen. As such it is
quite probable that the family of Hans and Maria (Bannheurs) Haas lived in
Dettingen an der Erms and their death events are reflected in the records of
the Eningen Parish which may have included both communities. |

Research into the history of this Bannheurs family
line indicates that the meaning and history of this surname is most likely
linked to that area of Europe where the German* language is commonly spoken.

Meaning of the Name It is most probable that the Bannheurs surname probably originated from a person who was a
woodcutter in the forest. This is
based upon the belief that Bannheurs is most likely the combination of
the topographical name Bann and the occupational name Heuer. Bann comes from the Middle High German word ban
meaning an area (of fields or woods) banned from agricultural or other use,
hence probably a topographic name for someone who lived by such a
reserve. For example Banwart is a German occupational name for a field or forest ranger,
wart means warden thus the Middle High German name of Banwart. Heuer is a
variant of Hauer which in German literally means ‘cutter’ or ‘chopper’, thus an
occupational name for a woodcutter, a butcher, or a stonemason. Related to this is the German occupational
name Hower from Middle High German höuwer which means ‘mower’ or,
‘hay-maker’. |

the state or region a first bearer and his family came from; the age old
division in tribes and regions (low German, middle German and upper German)

evidence is usually defined as the best available to

essence all that evidence which is inferior in its origin to primary
