Family history Family history

Very
little is known about the Hayes Family line.
The focal point for this lineage is my 2nd
great-grandmother Sarah Hayes who was born 1847 in York County, Pennsylvania and
married William Henry Silar. The couple had thirteen children of which 12 are
known of at this time. Sarah lived her
life in York County, where she died in 1917 at age 70 years.
Census records show that Sarah’s father was born in England as such one
may assume that he immigrated to America sometime in the first half of the
nineteenth century prior to the birth of his first known child in 1843. There is speculation that his name may be
William, born c. 1809, the son of Abraham (born c.1774) and Hannah (born
c.1778) Hayes. Immigration records
show this family arriving in Philadelphia, March 31, 1828. They traveled from Liverpool aboard the "Governor Douglass". Other members of this family group appear
to be daughters Eliza (born c.1812) and Phoebe (born c.1819). Sons Oliver (born c.1800) and the
aforementioned William. Also traveling
with this group was another William Hayes (born c.1789) who may be Abraham's
younger brother. The
family of Sarah Hayes, mother of the Sarah, is found living in Lower Chanceford Township
in 1850. Grandfather Hayes is absent
from this household. Based upon his
absence and the fact that he has a child listed as age one it is most
probable that he passed away sometime around 1848. Other information that may lend some
credence to the speculation as to the name and origin of Grandfather Hayes is
the fact that his eldest son was named Abraham (born c.1844) thus could have
been named after the Abraham Hayes the father of William Hayes. There is little or no evidence to link
William Hayes to the area of southeastern Pennsylvania except his brother
Oliver Hayes, born c. 1805 in England, and living in Chester County, Pennsylvania
in 1850. |

Origins of the
surname
|
||||
|
||||
|
||||
Research into the record of this Hayes family line indicates that the
meaning and history of this surname is most likely linked to that area of
Europe where the English* language is commonly spoken. |

Meaning
of the Name Hayes
is an English name having both patronymic and habitational meanings. The patronymic meaning comes from Hay. The habitational or locational name probably came from any one of a number of
places called "Hayes". For example Hayes in Devon and Worcestershire, is the plural of the Olde English "(ge)horg" for an enclosure, then the plural of
the Middle English hay
also meaning ‘enclosure’ or "hege" for hedge. In
Dorset, Greater London (formerly in Kent and Middlesex), and Worcestershire,
the name was derived from the Olde English pre 7th
Century "haes", for brushwood or underwood, or a
topographic name from the same word. Locational surnames were developed when former inhabitants
of a place moved to another area, usually to seek work, and were best
identified by the name of their birthplace. |

|
||||
History
of the Name This ancient Anglo-Saxon name is found in Sussex
where they were seated from very early times. The name is recorded as "Hesa" in the Domesday Book of
1086. Hayes in Kent, is recorded as
"Hese" in the 1168 Pipe Rolls, and in Middlesex. The first recorded spelling of the family
name is shown to be that of Hugh de la Heise, which was dated 1197, in the
"Eynsham Cartulary of Oxfordshire".
Hayes can also be found as Heyes and Hease. Henry Heyse is noted in
the Chartulary of Ramsey Abbey, Cambridgeshire dated 1240. Agnes Hayes married Willmus Smallrydge on
October 18th 1543, in Devon. One Martin Hayes, together with his wife and
child, is recorded as living in the Barbados in 1680; he was one of the
earliest settlers in the New World. There are no less than nineteen Coats of
Arms granted to this illustrious family. One granted to the Hayes family in
Middlesex is blue, on a gold pale three black bull’s heads couped. |

Early
Immigrants to North America During
the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries hundreds
of thousands of Europeans made the perilous ocean voyage to North
America. For many it was an escape
from economic hardship and religious persecution. For most it was an opportunity for to start
over, own their own land, and make a better future for their descendents.
Immigration records show a number of people bearing the name of Hayes, or one of its variants, as arriving
in North America between the 17th and 20th
centuries. Some
early known settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: David Hayes settled in Virginia in 1638;
Francis Hayes also in Virginia in 1653; Mary Hayes in Virginia in 1637 with
Peter her husband; Richard Hayes settled in Virginia in 1635. |

Surname Meanings & Origins Although the Domesday Book compiled by William the Conqueror required
surnames, the use of them in the British Isles did not become fixed until the
time period between 1250 and 1450. The
broad range of ethnic and linguistic roots for British surnames reflects the
history of Britain as an oft-invaded land. These roots include, but are not
limited to, Old English, Middle English, Old French, Old Norse, Irish,
Gaelic, Celtic, Pictish, Welsh, Gaulish, Germanic, Latin, Greek and
Hebrew. Throughout the British Isles,
there are basically five types of native surnames. Some surnames were derived
from a man's occupation (Carpenter, Taylor, Brewer, Mason), a practice that
was commonplace by the end of the 14th century. Place names reflected a location of
residence and were also commonly used (Hill, Brook, Forrest, Dale) as a basis
for the surname, for reasons that can be easily understood. Nicknames that stuck also became
surnames. About one-third of all US
surnames in the United States are Patronymic in origin, and identified the
first bearer of the name by his father (or grandfather in the case of some
Irish names). Acquired ornamental
names were simply made up, and had no specific reflection on the first who
bore the name. They simply sounded nice, or were made up as a means of
identification, generally much later than most surnames were adopted. Source: http://www.obcgs.com/LASTNAMES.htm |

Variations
of the surname
|
|
||
Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have
continued to unfold and expand often leading to an overwhelming number of
variants. As such one
can encounter great variation in the spelling of surnames because in early
times, spelling in general and thus the spelling of names was not yet
standardized. Later on spellings would
change with the branching and movement of families. Spelling
variations of this family name include: Hayes, Hayse, Hays, and many others. |
||||
|
||||
The complexity of researching records is compounded by the fact that in many cases an ancestors surname may also have been misspelled. This is especially true when searching census documents. The Soundex system was developed in an effort to assist with identifying spelling variations for a given surname. Soundex is a method of indexing names in the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 US Census, and can aid genealogists in their research. The Soundex Code for Hayes is H200. Other surnames sharing this Soundex Code: HAACK | HAAG | HAAKE | HAAS | HAASE | HACK | HAGA | HAGEY | HAGUE | HAGY | HAIG | HAKE | HASH | HASS | HAUCK | HAUG | HAUGH | HAUK | HAUS | HAUSE | HAWES | HAWK | HAWKE | HAWKS | HAWS | HAWSE | HAYES | HAYS | HECK | HEGGIE | HEISE | HESCH | HESS | HESSE | HEUS | HEWES | HICKEY | HICKS | HIGGS | HIGH | HISE | HIX | HOAG | HOCH | HOCK | HOGE | HOGG | HOGGE | HOGUE | HOKE | HOOK | HOOKS | HOSEY | HOSS | HOUCK | HOUGH | HOUK | HOUSE | HOUSH | HOUX | HOWES | HOWSE | HOXIE | HUCK | HUCKS | HUG | HUGG | HUGHEY | HUGO | HUSK | HUSKEY | HUSKIE | HUSS | HUSSEY | HUX . |

Source documents
|
|
||
The documents and headstones contained within the
“Source Documents Archives” have been located during my research of this
family, and used as evidence
to prove many of the facts contained within the database of this family’s
record. Most
of these documents can be considered as primary or secondary evidence. Primary evidence is
usually defined as the best
available to prove the fact in question, usually in an original document or
record. Secondary evidence
is in essence all that evidence which is inferior in its origin to primary
evidence. That does not mean secondary evidence is always in error, but there
is a greater chance of error. Examples
of this type of evidence would be a copy of an original record, or oral
testimony of a record’s contents.
Published genealogies and family histories are also secondary
evidence. Classifying evidence
as either primary or secondary does not tell anything about its accuracy or
ultimate value. This is especially
true of secondary evidence. Thus it is
always a good idea to ask the following questions: (1) How far removed from
the original is it, (when it is a copy)?;
(2) What was the reason for the creation of the source which contains
this evidence?; and (3) Who was responsible for creating this secondary evidence
and what interest did they have in its accuracy? SOURCE: You are welcome
