OUR BRUMWELL FAMILY

An Introduction

Two generations of this early Virginia family has been identified.  They are our 9th great-grandfather Peter Brumwell and his daughter Sarah.

Peter was probably born around 1655 in England and may be the son of William Brumwell who came to the Virginia colony in 1665.  Peter married Elinor Jackson in 1679 and to this union at least five known off-spring

were produced between 1679-1694.  Peter lived the remainder of his life in Middlesex county, Virginia where he died probably early in 1721.

It is their daughter Sarah Brumwell through who we are descended.  Sarah was born in 1679 and married William Bennett in 1702.  Sarah (Brumwell) Bennett lived her entire life in Middlesex County dying there in 1720.

BRUMWELL

Origins Of The Surname

Brumwell is an English surname that is a variant of Bramwell, and possibly in some instances of Bramhall.   Bramwell is a habitational name, apparently from a lost or unidentified places called Bramwell (named in Old English brom ‘broom’, ‘gorse’ + well(a) ‘spring’, ‘stream’). Bramhall is also a habitational name from either of two places, in Greater Manchester (formerly in Cheshire) and Sheffield, South Yorkshire, named with Old English brom ‘broom’ + halh ‘nook’, ‘recess’.(1)

This surname was first found in Cheshire, where they were seated from ancient times. Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: William Brumwell who arrived 61665 in Virginia, John Brumwell to Barbados in 1635 and T. Brummell who arrived in New Orleans in 1821.(2)

Source Documents

The documents contained herein have been located during our research of this family, and used as evidence to prove many of the facts contained within the database of this family’s record.

Most of these documents can be considered as primary or secondary.  Primary evidence is usually defined as the best available to prove the fact in question, usually in an original document or record.  Secondary evidence is in essence all that evidence which is inferior in its origin to primary evidence. That does not mean secondary evidence is always in error, but there is a greater chance of error.  Examples of this type of evidence would be a copy of an original record, or oral testimony of a record’s contents.  Published genealogies and family histories are also secondary evidence.

Classifying evidence as either primary or secondary does not tell anything about its accuracy or ultimate value.  This is especially true of secondary evidence.  Thus it is always a good idea to ask the following questions: (1) How far removed from the original is it, (when it is a copy)?;  (2) What was the reason for the creation of the source which contains this evidence?; and (3) Who was responsible for creating this secondary evidence and what interest did they have in its accuracy?
