OUR GOODE FAMILYAn Introduction
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
We have traced this family line back to
our 8th great-grandfather John Goode who was born 1701 in
Virginia, and his daughter Hannah, our 7th great-grandmother, born
1724 in Middlesex County, Virginia.
Hannah married William Bennett, III, also of Middlesex County, around 1741. At least 4 known offspring, all sons, were produced of this
union. We are descended through their
son Stephen born c. 1744. Little is currently known about this
family line. Apparently
there were several John Goodes in the aforementioned area and their |
origins are not
completely established. We may be descended from John Goode the immigrant
(c1630-1709) who was likely born in the midlands of England, possibly in the
Berkshire area. Another possibility as to progenitor to this line is
one of two brothers, John and Richard Goode. They were children of Richard
Goode of Whitley or elsewhere in the vicinity of Whitstone, England. Son
Richard who came to America was from Cornwall and may have come to America
via New England. |

GOODE
Origins Of The Surname
Goode is an English variant spelling of Good. The
surname Good is an English nickname from Middle English gode
‘good’ (Old English god). It may
is also from a medieval personal name, a survival of the Old English personal
name Goda, which was in part a byname and in part a short form of
various compound names with the first element god.(1) First found in
Yorkshire where they held a family seat from ancient times. Some of the first settlers of this family
name or some of its variants were: Robert Good, who settled in Massachusetts
in 1646; and William Good, who became a soldier for the northeast colonies in
1675. Other members of the Good name made their homes in Pennsylvania, Maine,
New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, and the Barbados.(2) (1)

The documents
contained herein have been located during our research of this family, and
used as evidence to prove many of the facts contained within
the database of this family’s record. Most of these documents can
be considered as primary or secondary.
Primary evidence is usually defined as the best
available to prove the fact in question, usually in an original document or
record. Secondary evidence
is in essence all that evidence which is inferior in its origin to primary
evidence. That does not mean secondary evidence is always in error, but there
is a greater chance of error.
Examples of this type of evidence would be a copy of an original
record, or oral testimony of a record’s contents. Published genealogies and family histories are also secondary
evidence. Classifying evidence as either
primary or secondary does not tell anything about its accuracy or ultimate
value. This is especially true of
secondary evidence. Thus it is always
a good idea to ask the following questions: (1) How far removed from the
original is it, (when it is a copy)?;
(2) What was the reason for the creation of the source which contains
this evidence?; and (3) Who was responsible for creating this secondary
evidence and what interest did they have in its accuracy? SOURCE: Greenwood, Val D., The Researcher’s Guide
