OUR TOMSON FAMILYAn Introduction
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The only ancestor currently known of
this family lineage is our 12th great-grandmother Anstie Tomson
born 1579 at Wiveliscombe, a town
located in the English county of Somerset.
Research shows that her surname could also be “Spicer”. Although why is not clear at this time. It
may be speculated that the Spicer surname may be the result of a former yet brief
marriage prior to her union with Thomas Bennett in 1599. |
At least seven known children were born
to Anstie and Thomas between 1602 and 1614.
One of whom as son Richard was elected governor of the Virginia
General Assembly in 1652, and re-elected to three successive terms. Anstie lived her entire life in
Wivelescombe dying there in 1647 at the age of 68 years. We are descended through her son Thomas
Bennett, Jr. born in 1603. |

TOMSON
Origins Of The Surname
Tomson is an English patronymic
surname derived from Tom, a short form of the personal name Thomas. Thomas is English, French, German, Dutch, and Danish, from the medieval personal name, of
Biblical origin, from Aramaic t’om’a, a byname meaning ‘twin’. It was borne by one of the disciples of
Christ, best known for his scepticism about Christ’s resurrection (John
20:24–29). The th- spelling is organic, the initial letter of the name
in the Greek New Testament being a theta. The English pronunciation as t
rather than th- is the result of French influence from an early date.
In Britain the surname is widely distributed throughout the country, but
especially common in Wales and Cornwall. (1) First found in
Ayrshire where they were seated as Lords of Kylne Kylle from about the year
1150. Some of the first settlers of
this family name or some of its variants were: Edward Thomson arrived on the
"Mayflower" at Plymouth, Mass. in 1620; Andrew Thomson settled in Harbour
Grace, Newfoundland, in 1801; Dugald Thomson settled in New York in 1739.( 2) (1)

The documents
contained herein have been located during our research of this family, and
used as evidence to prove many of the facts contained within
the database of this family’s record. Most of these documents
can be considered as primary or secondary.
Primary evidence is usually defined as the best
available to prove the fact in question, usually in an original document or
record. Secondary evidence
is in essence all that evidence which is inferior in its origin to primary evidence.
That does not mean secondary evidence is always in error, but there is a
greater chance of error. Examples of
this type of evidence would be a copy of an original record, or oral
testimony of a record’s contents.
Published genealogies and family histories are also secondary
evidence. Classifying evidence as either
primary or secondary does not tell anything about its accuracy or ultimate
value. This is especially true of
secondary evidence. Thus it is always
a good idea to ask the following questions: (1) How far removed from the
original is it, (when it is a copy)?;
(2) What was the reason for the creation of the source which contains
this evidence?; and (3) Who was responsible for creating this secondary
evidence and what interest did they have in its accuracy? SOURCE: Greenwood, Val D., The Researcher’s Guide
