39. ?Bryson MILLER

MILITARY: *Mexican War
*Civil War

RESIDENCES: *1855 - to KS [if true, he was a young man of 18]

BIOGRAPHY: *Possibly a Kansas state senator ( *"Families of Martinsville, IN: Work Files". Treat, Hall file (FHL film #1502571); correspondence from George Taylor (14 Apr 1975)); [This is probably a confusion between Bryson and Bryce W, his uncle. So far, however, no evidence has been found that either was a Kansas state senator.]

BIRTH: *Not listed with the family on the 1850 census
*Data compiled by Earle Koeble (source: unknown); says before 1850; listed as "Brice Miller"

ANALYSIS: *No evidence of the existence this Bryson Miller has yet been found. He does not appear on any census record with the Mordecai Miller family.
Some Miller researches have suggested that he served in the Mexican War which, if true, would indicate a much earlier birth date that the 1837 suggest here. The 1830 census of the Mordecai Miller family shows 1 young daughter and 1 young son. This young son is a much more likely prospect to identify with a Mexican War soldier. Research is expanding into Texas as a possible location for a Mexican War soldier.

MARRIAGE:
*to Isabel Wood - Indiana State Library website (www.statelib.lib.in.us). "Database to an Index of Indiana Marriage Records through 1850"; listed as "Stephen Treat" to "Isabel Wood"
*to Sarah Reece - the place and date of this marriage is really anybody's guess. Indiana has fairly complete marriage records online for the whole state prior to 1850 and this marriage does not appear. Some family members have suggested that this marriage took place "on the road" as Stephen was touring with Henry Reece, which means in could have occurred almost anywhere.
*to Elizabeth Morris -
*Some Treat researchers have suggested that Stephen was married to a 4th woman named Lillie Milligan. The source for this idea seems to be a chance meeting (in the cemetery where Jackson Andrew Treat is buried) between 2 Treat descendants. One was visiting Jackson's grave from OK and apparently showed the other person some notes listing this marriage to Lillie Milligan. The name of the person from OK is not remembered. We cannot at this stage guess what that person's notes were a reference to. No one else in the family seems to have ever heard of this woman which is, of course, not necessarily an indication she did not exist. For example, there is not any traditional memory of Isabel Wood either, but the marriage record is there to prove her existence. I am, however, at this point not including Lillie as another wife unless further information surfaces to warrant her inclusion.

BIOGRAPHY:
*Huel D Morphis in "Lest We Forget: A Genealogy/Anthology of the Morphis and Treat Families" quotes an obituary for Stephen Treat. The source of the obituary is identified as "a religious paper," apparently dated 9 Apr 1885 (or thereabouts) with a location line of Big Flat, AR. Mr Morphis indicates that most of the information from this section of his book was taken from J M and Velma Baker's "Along the GAARTEX Trail." Since the obituary identifies Stephen Treat as "an uncle of W B F Treat," I am suspicious that the "religious paper" may have been one of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) papers of the day. The article also implies the author had an intimate knowledge of Stephen Treat's condition in the time leading up to his death. Following is how the obituary is quoted in "Lest We Forget . . ."
"Our beloved Brother Stephen Treat departed this life on the 27th last. "Uncle Steve" is an uncle of W B F Treat of Indiana, was in his 75th year, was born in Pennsylvania, came to Indiana while a youth, was an intimate associate of J M Mathas [sic] of Bedford. He became a member of the Church of Christ over 50 years ago, has been a preacher of the gospel over 30 years. Bro. Flippin and "Uncle Steve" made their first efforts together and traveled just after the war over the mountains and rivers on foot to preach the gospel as they could. There could be found but 14 members in Marion County where they then resided. Bro. Flippin did the reading and Bro. Treat the preaching. Bro. Treat has been waiting the summons for three years. He often told us of his near departure and expressed his willingness to go."

MARRIAGE:
*to Sarah E Bostick - Sherry R Austin, "John Treat-Sarah E Bostick family group sheet," supplied by 2 Oct 1999 by Austin (Waverly, IL). This sheet has no source documentation. Says perhaps Bowling Green, KY

DEATH:
*Some researchers have suggested that John Berry did indeed live past the Civil War and removed to Indiana where he married again and had another family. A potential family has been identified in IN and I am attempting to find further information to prove or disprove this idea. A curious mention in John's father's will does exist that may support this whole idea. In the 1882 document Stephen Treat lists John Berry Treat as an heir as if he were still living. All of his other deceased children are either not listed or are listed as deceased in the document (if they had heirs themselves).

BIOGRAPHY:
*Family tradition says that John Berry Treat was a prisoner in St Louis, MO during the Civil War. Supposedly the family back home received word that he had died. The widow Nancy then remarried. Meanwhile, John's brother, "Jim", went to St Louis and found him alive. John came home briefly to discover his wife remarried and then left rather than causing a stir. This story was related to me by Ewell Treat in June 1997. It bears a striking resemblance to a story told to me by Don Gilham about his ancestor John Philippi Treat that he heard at the 1995 North Arkansas Ancestor Fair. The story fits better with John Berry Treat, although there are problems. John's wife, Nancy, did remarry but not until 7 Feb 1869. Assuming John was a prisoner of war, he would have been released long before 1869. If he stayed away, perhaps it was a matter of choice (his or hers) instead of necessity. More research is possible on this issue. I am told that this story has also been told with the brothers reversed.
*A paper title "Treat Family History" was written April 1961 by Lonely Nevius Treat. Mrs Treat was the wife of Quincy R Treat, a grandson of John Treat of Clark Co, IN. The paper says "Quincy Treat's grandfather Treat was from Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas about the state line or near it. He was of a big family having one brother who was a minister. He fought in the Civil War and following it, he drifted up north leaving his family in Arkansas. He married a very, very lovely sweet lady, Sarah Bostick, from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and they moved to Speed, Indiana, as there was a rock quarry and a cement mill there." Another paper title "Treat History" was written by Mrs Treat about 1974 and says "Quincy's grandfather Treat came into Kentucky after the Civil War and married in Bowling Green, a lovely lady. Her last name was Bostic [sic] and they came to Speeds [sic], Indiana, a town built by a very wealthy man "Speeds" around a big rock quarry and grandfather worked in it . . . I never knew what family grandfather left in Arkansas tho [sic] the story goes he did have one but all Q R knew was a brother who was a minister and one of his sons visited them when Q R was small."
