In February of 2016, the Rootsweb servers failed and any updates to my site that were made later than about April 2015 were lost.  I think I was able to find and restore all of what was missing or out-of-date from the backups on my own hard drive, but it is still possible that I missed something.

This website was originally intended to be primarily a place to display old family photos of ancestors that my family is lucky enough to have.  I had intended only to put photos on a fairly basic descendant tree to show how these people were related.  Then I decided to add a few cemetery photos to individuals for whom I had no personal photos.  I kept finding so much stuff to add to my "photo album" that it has turned itself into a genealogy site in spite of my original plans.   ;-)

My family is incredibly lucky to have so many wonderful old family photographs.  Since many of these people had large families, I felt that it was only fair to post these photos on the web so that other relatives and descendants could see what these people looked like.  If you have a photo of someone related to one of these families that you'd like to share, feel free to submit it (see my Photo Submission Guidelines below) and indicate whether or not you want your name and/or email address listed with it.  I am also including some cemetery/headstone photos, so feel free to share those as well.

These pages are for photographs of deceased ancestors and relatives only.  There may also be a few old photos and portraits of whole families where any still-living individuals have been deliberately left unidentified to protect their privacy.  There are also obituaries, newspaper clippings, family info, etc. included with some of these folks (right now, just on Dad's side of the family) and I hope to eventually also include family stories that come down through various relatives.

Please note that this is not a very formal genealogy page.  I am sure that there must be other folks out there who have done much better and more complete research on these family trees.  I am simply trying to provide faces and personal information to go with the names and dates.  I think that having photos of these people makes it easier to think of them as people and not just name and date statistics.

PLEASE PARDON MY DUST! -- I am in the process of rearranging the website to try and get some of the information better organized.  Please let me know if I have any broken links that need fixing.  To anybody who has written me in the past couple of months - I have your letters and will do my best to try to get back to you as soon as possible.  Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

Click on thumbnails to see larger copies of photos or go to pages with additional information (obituaries, newspaper articles, etc.).  I have tried to indicate which thumbnails lead to information pages and which lead only to larger images.  Please note that some of the full-sized photos are quite large and may take some time to load on slow connections.

Ancestral Photos

Much of the information on the people represented on this web site comes from personal recollections of my parents' and grandparents' generations.  I have also received some very generous contributions of information and photographs from descendants in other lines of my families.  My family moved out of New York state in the 1970s, so I don't have easy access to research information (the internet databases help, but are no substitute for being there).  If you have corrected or additional information for any of these folks, please e-mail me or leave a message in the guestbook.

I have been moving some of these sections around recently to try to better organize them, and it's possible that I have forgotten to update some of the new links.  If you find a broken link on one of these pages, please let me know about it so I can fix it as soon as possible.  I have also tried to go back and put all of the people in my direct ancestry in bold type, although it is possible that I may have missed a few of these.

Mom's side of the family

cover of Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches  Most of the information that I have on my grandmother's lines of the family comes from her book, "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches", which I am copying onto the web.  Surnames in this book include:

Most of these family lines lived in and around Ulster and Dutchess Counties in New York state.

My grandfather's family is below.  Since both his parents were named SMITH, we haven't made much headway on his family yet.

  • SMITH of Dutchess and Ulster Counties, NY
descendants of Lorenzo SMITH (1853-1914 or 1915) and Abigail HORTON (1852-1923).  This family moved around an awful lot - most of the current entries are buried in and around Ulster County, although in life they may have resided in various locations on both sides of the Hudson River.
includes ANDERSON / ANDERSEN, AYRES, COUTANT, ENDEKAS, HORTON, MATTHEWS, QUICK, SEAMAN, WILLIAMS, etc.

I have a page in the SMITH section for my grandfather's photos of his worksites.  He was a crane and shovel operator in the northeastern states from about the late 1920s or early 1930s and we have over fifty of these photos.

    Dad's side of the family

Almost all of what I have on the earlier members (further back than my great-grandparents) of these branches of the family comes from the large collection of newspaper clippings made by my great-grandmother Elma (BOWMAN) SIMMONS and a very few transcriptions of family Bible entries (I have, unfortunately, never seen the actual Bibles - don't know which cousins would have these now).  I personally have very little information outside of a few obituaries and family photographs, but I am beginning to find more online now.  I would appreciate hearing anything that you may have to add about these people.

    My Family Tree

I have made some basic charts using templates found at http://www.ida.net/users/elaine/pedigre2.HTM.  These only go back seven generations and have very basic information in them.  I am still in the process of verifying sources, etc., but I have uploaded a rather messy GEDCOM file to WorldConnect if only to back it up somewhere safe.  Feel free to email me with corrections, additions, questions, etc., but be aware that I'm only just starting to get involved in this stuff and may not have much more information than you do.  Happy hunting!

The "Miscellaneous Folks" are people that are probably not related to me.  The data comes mostly from old obituary and other newspaper clippings kept by relatives as well as census, cemetery survey data and modern obituaries from the local papers.    I most probably DO NOT have further information on these people.

    Photographic Cemetery Surveys

This section currently contains photos of cemeteries in the areas in New York that my families are from, although I may eventually be able to add some cemeteries in my local area as well.  Some of these were taken by myself or my family.  Others have been generously contributed by correspondents.  PLEASE NOTE:  Except for Laurel Cemetery in Ulster County, New York and Bratton Cemetery in Travis County, Texas, these are NOT complete surveys of the cemeteries in question - the photos are mostly stones of immediate relatives / ancestors, although, as noted previously, several other stones have been generously contributed.  I am also starting to survey and photograph nearby cemeteries in Texas.

    Antique Store People

These are photos that I found in antique stores, flea markets, etc. and posted here in hopes that relatives of the people depicted will find them.  The photos themselves come from all over the United States.  I've even seen some from other countries.  Since I don't have unlimited funds, I try to restrict myself to photos with names on them.  Locations given are from the address of the photography studio where they were taken unless otherwise noted.  These are not for sale, but I will be happy to give them to relatives in return for the cost of postage and purchase (usually about $3 - tintypes seem to run about $5).  I cannot take requests to look for photos of specific families - I just pick up what I can find when I see them.

NOTE:  This section has not been updated for quite some time.  I really wanted to keep up with it, but currently have too much else going on.  I will leave these here for now and hopefully will be able to get back into this before too long.

Please note that if you really want me to respond to your message, it's a good idea to email me a copy of it.  I have had a couple of people post in the guestbook that I could not respond to because their addresses were apparently mis-spelled and my e-mails to them bounced back as undeliverable.  Please also check your spam filter settings as I have tried to reply to some people and never received a response back - my guess is that their spam filters were set too high and they never saw my emails.
