Great-Grandma's Collection of Clippings

My great-grandmother, Elma (Bowman) Simmons (1862-1943), collected quite a pile of clippings related to friends, neighbors, family, and just miscellaneous stuff that interested her. Most of them are of people and events in and around Dutchess County, New York, especially in the area of Pine Plains. I have uploaded transcriptions of them here in the hope that someone might find them helpful or at least interesting. I have alphabetized the obituary section by surname.

Elma did not include the name of the newspaper or the date in any of these clippings. Where this information is available, it usually came from the back of the clipping. If the year of death is mentioned in an obituary, I have assumed that to be the year the clipping was published.

Rhinebeck 1928 annual recap

Births, marriages, and deaths of 1928. The date of the newspaper (probably The Rhinebeck Gazette) is January 12, 1929.

Articles and partial articles on the back of the above list:

"Recent Deaths - (Continued from Page One)": I do not have page one of this list of obituaries. I do not believe that I am related to any of these people and have no further information on any of them. I believe all four of these deaths occurred in January of 1929 as they give dates like "last Friday" and "this Friday".

Radcliffe, Mary G., (probably ca. 1840 - 1929) - daughter of David V.N. and Mary (Gravert) Radcliff. This obituary also mentions a nephew, Major Radcliffe Heermance of Princeton, New Jersey.
Zeigler, Carrie (Merryweather), (1871 - 1929) - wife of Theodore Zeigler, daughter of Thomas Merryweather. Her mother's name was also mentioned, but the paper has torn at that point. The clipping also mentions her sister (Mrs. Webster Rockefeller) and three brothers (Arthur, Almon, and James).
Fitzpatrick, James, (ca. 1863 - 1929) - mentions that he was born in Ireland and had been living in Rhinebeck for the past 40 years when he died. The obituary mentions two sons (John and William), three daughters (Mary, Mrs. John Prather, and Elizabeth), and four grandchildren (John and William Fitzpatrick, and John and Mary Elizabeth Prather).
Stringham, Henry David, (???? - 1929) - son of John and Eliza (Barnes) Stringham. The obituary mentions no other relatives, although it is possible that they were clipped off since this is near the bottom of the page.

Partial "High School Bulletin": This appears to be the local high school's section of the paper. Large sections are missing from the article as Elma was only interested in what was on the other side of the page. The part of the article that I do have lists members of the sixth grade who had 100 percent during the month of December.

1936 Bowman Reunion

The first annual family reunion of the Bowman family of Dutchess County was held in 1936 at the home of Jane (Milroy) Bowman in Stanfordville (Jane was Elma's mother). There are two newspaper clippings related to this event. I have no idea which newspapers these came from. These are the same clippings listed on the BOWMAN index page.

Obituary Clippings

These are mostly, but not all, of people from Dutchess County, New York. I have 55 of these - some have grave stone photos.

Miscellaneous Clippings

These are all kinds of clippings - humor columns, recipes, poetry, religious pieces, etc. Often the backs are far more interesting to me than the clipping Great-Grandma was interested in, so I will list them here as well.

Some 1888 court notices from Dutchess County, probably from a Poughkeepsie newspaper. These were on the back of the obituary for Rev. George S. Hare. These include:
- Two notices apparently settling estates (the late Macy Bowman of Stanford Twp. with Esther Sherow as Executrix; and the late Julia A. Smith of Wappinger Twp. with Isaac V. A. Smith as Executor). Macy may be related to my Bowman line, but I'm not sure yet.
- Some kind of action by one Margaret E. Covert against Hannah E. McMurray, Albert K. McMurray, Lucius Lyon and Henry Jones Batchelder.
- Some kind of case related to one parcel of land in Stanford Twp. and one in Milan Twp. Evelyn W. Simmons was the plaintiff against "Sarah P. Wilber, et. al." as defendants.
- Some kind of case with various members of the Kenworthy family against a lot of other people, including more Kenworthys, as defendants.
Please note that I have no further information on any of these people. They just happened to be on the back of an obituary clipping.
