Smith and related lines
(Anderson/Andersen, Ayres, Coutant, Endekas, Horton, Matthews, Quick, Seaman, Williams)

My grandfather, Earl Edward Smith, was not close to his family and so we have very few photographs of them.

  1. Grave of Lorenzo Smith, wife, and two sons in June 1991  Grave of Lorenzo Smith (1853-1914 or 1915), his wife Abigail Horton (1852-1923), and two of their eight children - Samuel Smith (1880-1942) and William Smith (1883-1956).  This snapshot was taken in June 1991 in Lloyd Cemetery near New Paltz, NY.  My mother says that these graves were apparently unmarked until some time in the 1950s, when the current stone was put in place.  We have no photos of Lorenzo or Abigail, but I do have Lorenzo's obituary.  He apparently died in Dutchess County.  Lorenzo and Abigail had eight children.

    1. Andrew and Eva Smith  Andrew Adrian Smith (1874-1930) and Eva Caroline (Smith) Smith (1873-1954).  Andrew and Eva had seven children, one of whom died in infancy.  Click for a page with some additional photos.

Smith brothers  The three surviving sons of Andrew and Eva submitted by a descendant.  Left to right:  William L. Smith (1906 - 1989), Earl E. Smith (1900 - 1982), Charles H. Smith (1904 - 1978)

      1. Catharine Louise (Smith) Quick  Catharine Louise Smith (1897-1977) married John Quick, who died in 1958.  This photo was taken in December, 1916 when Catharine was 19 years old.  Click to see a larger image.

      2. Harris Smith, (1898-1898).

      3. Earl Smith in the 1920s  Earl Edward "Smitty" Smith (1900-1982).  My grandfather.  He also appears in the large 1933 Van Kleeck family photo in the Van Kleeck section.  Grandpa was born in Wappingers Falls in Dutchess County.  He and his family resided in Kingston, Ulster Co., NY.

      4. Edna Smith (1901-1972) married Elmer Ayres (no dates).

      5. Charles H. Smith and his wife Florence  Charles Hawley Smith, Sr. (1904-1978) and his wife Florence (Matthews) Smith (1902-1982) at a niece's wedding in 1969.  The identity of the girl standing in front of them is unknown (not one of their daughters, though).  Click to see a larger image.

      6. William L. Smith and his mother Eva  William L. Smith (1906-1989) with his mother Eva Caroline (Smith) Smith.  Photo taken some time in the late 1940s or early 1950s?  Click to see a larger image.

      7. Dorothy E. (Smith) Coutant at 16 yrs  Dorothy E. (Smith) Coutant as an adult  Russell Coutant  Dorothy Elizabeth Smith (1914-1978) and her husband, Russell Coutant (dates unknown).  Click to see larger images.

    2. James L. or Lewis James Smith (1871-????).  I have no further information on him.

    3. grave of Anton and Carrie Andersen  Grave of Caroline "Carrie" Smith (1878-1943) and her husband Anton Andersen (1870-1959).  I have also seen the name spelled "Anderson".  "Arthur A." may be their son - perhaps one that died young?  We don't have much information on this couple other than that they apparently also had a daughter who got married.  This photo was taken in Lloyd Cemetery in June 1991.

    4. Samuel M. Smith (1880-1942)  Again, no photos available, but we do have Samuel's obituary.  He resided in the Town of Esopus, Ulster Co., NY.  He is buried near his father Lorenzo and brother William in Lloyd Cemetery (see gravestone photo at the top of this page).

    5. William L. Smith  William L. Smith (1883-1956).  Click for a page with his obituaries.  He is buried near his father Lorenzo and brother Samuel in Lloyd Cemetery (see gravestone photo at the top of this page).

    6. Sarah Catherine "Kate" Smith (1887-1963) married Aaron Williams (no dates).  They apparently lived in New Paltz, NY and had at least one son who got married.

    7. Ida Mae Smith (1889-????) married George B. Seaman (no dates).  They had at least one daughter who got married.

    8. grave of Ella Smith and Nicholas Endekas  Grave of Ella "Nell" Smith (1893-1976) and her husband Nicholas Endekas (1892-1976).  The headstone (which is difficult to read in this photo) gives both birthdates as 1892.  This is the other side of the stone for Lorenzo Smith and his family (see the top of the page).  This photo was taken in Lloyd Cemetery in June 1991.  I think they may have had at least three children.
