I descend from Arthur and his son Adelbert, but I have been trying, bit by bit, to collect information about each branch of James and Susannah’s family.  I would love to hear from other descendants.

Ancestors

I have been able to learn very little about James Appleby’s parents.   After immigrating, it seems William and Mary remained in Lafayette County for the rest of their lives.  They started buying land in New Diggings Township in 1848.   In 1850, William listed his occupation as a miner, but by 1860, he was farming his land.  Mary’s maiden name was AYER or AYERS.  I have a clue that she died August 18, 1874, but I have not been able to confirm it.  William’s death record lists his date of death as June 28, 1888.   However, the June 21, 1888 issue of The Pick & Gad (a Shullsburg newspaper) published the notice:   “Mr William Appleby was buried from P M church at Democrat on the 18th.”  Democrat was the early name for Lead Mine, the village near William’s home.
