This genealogy is a compilation of data prepared by  several other family members,  including a study began by my father, William Chester Swift, before his death in 1985.   Much of the data he had compiled had been received from Francis A. Trotter of Indianapolis who contributed the records which his father, Frank A.  Trotter,  had collected over a number of years.  My father had also relied heavily upon a family record maintained by his cousins, Ada Hall Newlin and Florence Hall Jones of Paoli, Indiana.  He had also contacted relatives in Nebraska and Iowa and Carol Trotter Berkey of Columbus, Indiana.
I have supplemented the genealogical data from the above sources with any family pictures that I could obtain.  This effort was greatly assisted by Frances Trotter, Nina Lewis, Neva Wheeler, Carol Berkey, Pearl Crafton, Mary Opal Hoke, and Edna Swift Northerner.  My son Brian C. Swift, was also of great assistance in preparing half-tone masters of the pictures so that acceptable copies could be made.
The descendants of John R. Trotter and Sarah Ramsey are outlined in the pages immediately preceding to the best of my ability, recognizing that some of the births and marriages may not be reflected, particularly the more recent ones.  The numbering system is my own device, and it should be noted that the numbers have no significance other than a means of keeping all of the names in some logical order and to facilitate cross referencing.
Although the aforementioned outline includes all descendants for which I had information. the biographical material has been limited to the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of John R. and Sarah Ramsey Trotter.  It must be admitted that even that information can not he considered as complete.   I regret the brevity of information for some of the individuals and hope that any readers who have additional information would kindly make it available.
In the process of gathering this information and photographs, I have had the added pleasure of meeting, in person or by mail, several relatives who I had not previously known.   I am grateful to all of them for their kindness and cooperation,
William T. Swift

Introduction
To the best of our knowledge,  the first of our Trotter ancestors  to  have  migrated to America was  a James  W.  Trotter .    He  was  born  in  Ulster ,  Ireland in  1717.    He married in Ireland and,  with his wife,  migrated to the area of  Staunton,  Virginia about the year 1739.   He and his wife lived out their lives in Virginia and are buried near Staunton.
He was the father of Isaac Trotter who married Rebecca Thomas.  They were the parents of Isaac Trotter, Jr.
Isaac Trotter,  Jr. was born in Augusta County, Va. about 1755.   He purchased   land in Virginia,  as evidenced by a deed recorded in Staunton, Va.  He married Jane Dixon and they had eight children as listed below.  He had a second wife named Esther McClure.
1.  James Trotter, who married a Martha Bell.  They had a daughter named Isabel.
2.   John A.  Trotter  He and his descendants are the subject of this study on the
      following pages
3.  Rebecca Trotter, who married a John Dixon
4.  Mary (called Polly) Trotter, who was never married
5.  Sarah Trotter, who was never married
6.  Jane Trotter, who married James Huston
7.  Isaac Trotter, who married Catherine Patterson.  They had two daughters - Mary Jane and Rebecca.
8.  Archibald Trotter, who married Jane Brown.  They were the   parents  of James W.B., Cynthia Esteline,  Emily V. and Cyrus N.
Isaac Trotter, Jr. died June 22, 1831.

Other  genealogy  records  list  several  persons  with  the Trotter name among the early settlers of the Shenandoah Valley, but linkages to the above family have not yet been established.
John R. Trotter
was   the  son  of  James   Isaac  Trotter,  Jr.  and  the great-grandson of James W. Trotter, who migrated to Virginia from Ireland about 1739.
He was born May 15,  1788 and died on July 4,  1831 at the age of   43.   He died a few days after the death of his father.  He is buried at Staunton, Virginia.
On June 4,  1810 he married Sarah Elizabeth Ramsey and the marriage  bond   is on file in Staunton,  Va.   Sarah Ramsey was born October 19,  1784 and died September 17,  1870 at the age of 85.
They had eight children, as follows:
1.0   James Isaac Addison Trotter, born April 8, 1811
2.0   John Ramsey Trotter, born December 23, 1812
3.0   William Black Trotter, born August 11, 1814
4.0   Archibald Dixon Trotter, born July 11, 1816
                        5.0   Jane B. Trotter, born March 8, 1818
6.0   Cyrus Newton Trotter, born April 8, 1819
7.0   Hamilton Craig Trotter, born October 10, 1823
                        8.0   Alexander P. Trotter, born January 9, 1828

Following the death of her husband in 1831, Sarah Ramsey Trotter migrated from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia into  southern  Indiana,  accompanied  by six of her eight children.  They probably arrived within two or three years after  the  death  of  her  husband.   Her  sons  James  and Archibald remained in Virginia.
They first settled along the Blue River in Harrison County at or near Milltown.  Later they moved northward into Jackson Twp. of Washington County, with a mailing address of Martinsburg, Indiana.  At a later time, probably in the mid 1840s as indicated on tax and polling lists, they moved to near Hardinsburg in Posey Twp. of Washington County.
The text of a letter from Archibald to his mother, postmarked February 23, 1841 from Staunton, Virginia is described & shown below.   It indicates that he was a schoolteacher, and that his brother, James, was a riding sheriff.   Although   the  letter  mentions  their  intent  to also go west, they both died in Virginia.  No record is known to exist that James and/or Archibald ever came to Indiana.

Description and content of letter follows

After the death of her husband, John, in 1831, Mrs. Sarah (Ramsey) Trotter left the locale of
Augusta County, Va. in 1833. With six of her eight children, she migrated westward into the region of southern Washington County in Indiana, Two sons, James I.A., her first born,, and Archibald D.,, her fourth, remained in Virginia. In July of 1841, Archibald became 25 years of age,, and his brother, James, was 30 in April of that year when this letter was written to their mother,
The original of the letter is written on two sheets of paper, unlined,, using pen and ink with penmanship in the Spencerian manner, These two sheets are folded into a 6"' X 3" size with all edges doubled inward in a protective manner which, after the application of a red sealing wax,, became the final form in which it was mailed (no envelope). The addressee's name and address were penned on the side opposite the seal. In lieu of a stick-on postage stamp (first to be issued in 1847) the numerals "25" are penned in the corner where the stamps would now be placed and diagonally opposite is written "Pd Mail".
The postmark reads: Staunton
                                                   Feb,.23
                                                  Va
The address is as follows:
Mrs. Sarah Trotter
Martinsburg
Washington County  Indiana

The original letter still exists.

Staunton Va Feby 22, 1841

Dear Mother

I have been waiting some weeks since receiving your letter of the 4th ult expecting to be able to write something decisive to you but have now taken my pen to write upon the probability there has nothing transpired in the affairs here worth drawing your attention to. In my searches at Mrs. Finleys among the papers of Grandfather I found nothing worth your attention. So far as I could learn the papers most likely to be of any importance were in the hands of Uncle Wm. Ramsey and I think it more than probable that some of those lands have fallen into the hands of Uncle Andrew Ramsey.

My school is out here in about 5 weeks and if I then can arrange business so that James will be able to attend to it I will then come out. If not I will either go to school a few months or commence another school. If I go to school I will probably come out before sometime next winter. However I will be able to write to you more satisfactorily in my next letter. James is still riding sheriff and will continue to do so until next March. He is very well. I believe that he intends going west then.

When you wrote to me you informed me that the boys were then going to school. I hope they are still going. Give them my love and tell them to endeavor to make good use of their time. Tell them also that I expect to be their instructor next winter. I am in tolerable health and sincerely hope that these few lines may find you and each of you enjoying the same blessing. Give my love to brothers and sister after excepting a good portion to yourself.

Nothing more but remains your affectionate son.

To Sarah Trotter
A.D. Trotter

P.S. I wrote to Uncle Perkins immediately after I read your letter informing him all I knew about his interest in Uncle Wm. Black's Estate.
