WILLIAM TROTTER, Lt.-Col 2nd Durham, R.V, b 1800, m Henrietta, dau of Major Andrew Philip Skene, 5th and 9th Light Dragoons (the 29th head of the Scotch House, of SKENE of Skene, in male succession), only son of Col Philip Whartan Skene,• Col Philip Wharton Skene was grandson of John Skene, of Hallyards Castle, Fife, by his wife Elizabeth Wallace (her sister Euphemia having m Earl and Duke of Melfort (see BURKE'S Peerage), KG, was ancestress of the present Earl of Perth and Melfort (see BURKE'S Peerage), and both Melfort and Skene, with their wives, accompanied KING JAMES II to St. Germain, where Melfort was cr. a duke, but Skene refused a title), dau of Sir Thomas Wallace, 2nd Bt, of Craigie Castle, Ayrshire, MP. and afterwards Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland, the heir male of the renowned Sir William Wallace, and 5th in descent from Sir John Wallace, of Craigie, by his wife Lady Margaret Cunningham, dau of 5th Earl of Glencairn, by his wife. Lady Joan Hamilton, dau of 1st Earl of Arran (see BURKE'S Peerage), son of Lord Hamilton, by his wife Princess Mary, eldest dau of JAMES II. This John Skene was grandson of Sir Andrew Skene, of Hallyards, by his wife Barbara Forbes, sister of Sir William Forbes, 1st Bt, of Craigievar, and descended from 2nd Lord Forbes. Sir Andrew Skene was 5th in descent from Alexander Skene, Baron of Skene, who fell at Flodden Field, 1513, 9th in descent from Adam de Skene, k at the battle of Harlow, 1411, and 13th in descent from John de Skene, of Skene, one of the arbitrators between Bruce and Balliol, at Berwick, 1290. There is a baronetcy, now dormant, in the Skene family. The last George Skene of that ilk (the 28th Laird), Capt in the Army and MP. for Aberdeen, d. unm. in 1825, and bequeathed Skene House, and the estates to his eldest sister's son, 4th Earl of Fife. Of the Skenes it has been said, "This family is more distinguished by its antiquity, bravery, and loyalty than by many noble alliances, and a descent derived from several royal and illustrious stocks."
