In late
August of 1999, I, Richard Tubbs, my wife Esther, and my cousin
Anna Tubbs Ordway, descendents of Jeremiah Tubbs and his third son,
Seneca Tubbs, traveled to upstate New York "In Search of The Tubbs
Clan". Following here is some of the information and links to
pictures of tombstones of the ancestors and relatives which we
found on this trip into the past.
Our trip began with my hope of just maybe finding the final resting place of Emmet Jay Tubbs who was my great grandfather. After emailing cousin Anna (who lives in Georgia) about our proposed trip, she mentioned that she also wanted to locate her family plot. She was going to be "up east" and would join us in our search.
Our trip began on Monday. We began by driving to St. Joseph's Convent Cemetery in Latham NY where we found the gravesite of Anna's sister, Lucy Frances Tubbs (born 7-2-1915 and died 2-14-1988).
We then drove from Latham/Troy, New York up to Warrensburg to find the Saint Cecilia's Cemetery. Relying on her memory, Anna guided us to the cemetery where we found the grave site of Lee Seomore Tubbs, her father (b 6-16-1885 d 2-5-1960); Katherine Tubbs, her mother (b 4-23-1886 d 7-11-1947); and Hugh PatrickTubbs, her brother (b 1923 d 1933) .
While at St. Cecilia's Cemetery, which is actually part of the larger Warrensburg Cemetery, we found some additional relatives which I did not photograph but am posting the information here for reference. These are not from Seneca Tubbs' lineage and I am not sure which branch they are from. Perhaps a reader of this information can provide some information. Spelling and other information are copied exactly as it appeared on the stones......

Those buried in this Harris family plot at Warrensburg are probably related to Louisa Harris Tubbs, wife of Seneca Tubbs (who are both buried at Maquoketa, Iowa) and/or Angeline Harris Tubbs, wife of Jeremiah's second son, George Tubbs (both are buried at Maquoketa, IA).

Related to the Tubbs family through marriage was the Bates family of Warren County, New York. We found these at Warrensburg but were not photographed.

Our next stop was in Lake George, NY at the Evergreen Cemetery. It was here that we hoped to find the resting place of my great grandfather. The day had turned very hot and humid, so we did not at first get out of our vehicle but rather drove around slowly. Within a few minutes, we spotted the word "EMMET" on the front of a stone. We had found great grand-dad. It was almost as if he had beckoned us in his direction.
Emmet Jay Tubbs (note the corrected spelling with only one "t") was thought to have died in 1903, but discovery of his tombstone revealed that he died in 1905. Also, some other changes were noted as indicated below. The tombstone information is as follows......(the remarks in parenthesis are mine).

But this was not all that we found here. Very near was the tombstone of Lilly M. (Tubbs) O'hara who was Emmet Tubbs' only daughter, and also the Wood family plot where Minnie D. Bates, another sister of Alma Bates Tubbs, is buried. Also shown is her husband, Charles S. Wood.
After the successes of the
day so far, what more could we have wanted?? We still had lots of
daylight left, so we set out for Queensbury, NY and the Sunnyside
Cemetery. We had information that some of the early Tubbs' were
buried there. Not being really sure of the location of this cemetery,
I trusted in my luck to find it. All I had to go on was a topographic
map which showed NO cemeterys in the vicinity of the village of
Queensbury but it DID show one near Lake Sunnyside, several miles
west. We took a chance....... In the late afternoon, we arrived
at Lake Sunnyside, and yes, there was an ancient un-named
cemetery where the map indicated. Was this the one?? We all got out
in the hot afternoon sun and started walking the rows of old, worn
tombstones. Some were barely legible, but we went on. We started on
the east side and worked westward. Finally, as we approached the
final rows on the west side, we found a Tubbs stone! And what luck !!
It was the tombstone of Jeremiah
Tubbs, father of
Seneca, great grandfather of Emmet Jay and my great-g-g-g
grandfather, and in near pristine shape at that!!
The stone
reads......
"If life was a thing that
money could buy,
The rich would all live but the
poor would all die.
But infinite wisdom hath ordered
it so
That the rich together with the
poor must go."
Close by were the graves of
Betsey
Tubbs and
Jerey
Tubbs, two of his
children and the grave of Sibbel
or Sibble Tubbs (it
seemed to be spelled both ways), his wife.
Betsey's stone
reads.........
"Dearest sister thou hast
____
Here thy ____ deeply
____
But 'tis God that has
b____
He can all our sorrows
heal."
(the blanks indicate unreadable areas of the stone)
Jerey's stone reads.........
"Our brother the haven hath
____
Out flying the tempest &
wind
His rest he hath sooned
obtained
And left his companions
behind."
And finally, Jeremiah's first wife Sibble/Sibbel (Odell) Tubbs.......
Nearby, was the marker for Phebe J. Tubbs who was daughter of Sidney Danvers Tubbs, one of Jeremiah's sons. Sidney had married Amanda Griffin who was also from the Warren County area. Some time after Phebe's death, Sidney and Amanda moved to the Maquoketa, Iowa area where they are both buried.
Phebe's marker reads as follows.......
What a rewarding day this had been!! And a long one at that, so we stopped our search and returned to the motel. Anna and her husband Bill had to leave for their home in Georgia the following morning, but Esther and I would resume our searches the following afternoon.
Tuesday afternoon found Esther and I back at Evergreen Cemetery where we took tracings of Emmet J. Tubbs' stone and also took some more photos. We then went to the area northwest of Glens Falls to find an old settler cemetery (which we never did find) but instead found a project house of the Warren County Historical Society. We stopped there to ask directions and found that one of the members there was of the Harris family, related to the Tubbs family through several marriages. Addresses were exchanged and I will be corresponding with her in the near future to try and gather more information about the early Tubbs'.
We proceded on back to Sunnyside Cemetery where we again took stone tracings and did a more thorough search of the cemetery. Several other possible relations were found from the Odell (Jeremiah's wife Sibble was an Odell) and Harris (several Tubbs' married Harris') families. Again, perhaps readers of this account can provide information about these people.
