JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
by Bonnie Miller

September 15, 2002

Can you really travel back in time to see your ancestors as they where when they lived? With my vivid imagination, I had been counting the days until my sister Laurie, her husband Norm, myself and my husband, Don would leave on our journey back in time. We had been planning for sometime to visit the place where William and Elizabeth lived in the area of Patterson, New York. The place mentioned by Pelletreau in his book, as being:

"a highway marked by trees from Wm. Herns on ye north side of ye Bear Swamp, so called, until it meets with Madam Britts Line (page 132) and; Wm. Herns was probably where Aikins Corners are now, being the east end of the road from Patterson village. The road from Wm. Herns to Madam Britts Line is probably the main street of Patterson and its continuation."

Ah, the pictures this conjured up in the mind! With great anticipation, we set off on our journey to claim our ancestors. We left Mississauga on September 15th, 2002 driving as far as Waterdown, New York then we decided to swing off and drive through the Adirondacks for some sightseeing, spending the night at Tupper Lake. The next day we traveled on to the Catskills stopping to see the Howe Caverns and spending that night near Albany, New York. The Catskills and the Adirondacks were both breathtakingly beautiful. One could picture Williamss son Thomas hiding in these mountains while fighting, along with his older sons, with the British during the American Revolution. Thomas and sons were, in fact, arrested and held in Albany for a period of time, as a United Empire Loyalists, prior to leaving for Upper Canada.
