THOMAS HEARNS II (JUNIOR)

Thomas Hearns Junior was born about 1770, the son of Thomas and Deborah., believed in Philipse Patent, Dutchess County New York.

On the map of The Plan of the Township of Fredericksburgh dated 1786, that hangs on the wall at the Loyalist Cultural Centre in Adolphustown, and on the claim made by Darius Hearns in 1822; reference is made to the location ticket that on September 23, 1784 the land located at Lot 11 Concession 4 in Frederickasburgh was granted to Thomas Senior and Thomas Jr., with Thomas Senior granted the east half and Thomas Junior the west half. To see a close-up of the specific location click here.

Thomas was baptized on February 20, 1788 by Rev. John Langhorn with his siblings in Fredericksburgh.

In the book The Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the Mecklenburg/Midland District (Counties of Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, Hastings and Prince Edward transcribed and indexed by Linda Corupe UE, page 275 we find that Thomas Junior appeared in court on January 14, 1815 to answer a charge of assault on a constable.

There are many versions of whom Thomas may have married and when. I am presenting the theory that he married first Hannah, and second Martha Cronk (daughter of John Cronk and Martha Chatterton) on October 29, 1812 (or February 13, 1798). Martha was born in 1794 and died 1824. There is a possibility that this is referencing a different Thomas, so may be subject to change.

In 1822 an affidavit was made a man in Richmond indicating that Thomas had left the province with no intention of returning. Click here to view the document.

This was however not the case as a petition was written on June 29th, 1830 whereby Thomas Junior makes his case to Sir John Colborne, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Upper Canada, using the original land grant dated 1784 of General Haldimand as the basis of his petition. On July 14 of the same year, receipt no. 159 for a patent fee of 3.52 currency was received with regard to this same piece of land being East half of Lot 11, 4th Concession Fredericksburgh granted to Thomas Harnes by order in Council of the 12th of July 1830.

Based on the documents at the Land Registry Office in Napanee it is recorded that on April 7, 1829 Darius (Haines) sold the East 1/2 to Thomas (Haines) for $30.00, registered February 7, 1834
On July 23, 1830 the Crown gave deed to Thomas Jr. (Haines) of the East 1/2 (100 acres) of Lot 11 Concession 4
On December 31, 1833 Thomas gave deed to Darius (Haines) of the same land for the price of $100.00, registered February 18, 1834
On October 7, 1834 Thomas Hearns Jr. sold the East 1/2 of Lot 11 Concession 4 (100 acres) to George Bowers for the sume of $90.00; registered October 18, 1834. This George Bowers was the husband of Darius' daughter Mary. The land stayed in the possession of George Bowers without further activity until May, 1862 when George sold it to Joseph Huff. Mr. Huff only held on to the property until September of the same year when it was sold back to George Bowers.
