Hall of Mentors

Good Day and welcome to the Hall of Mentors. My name is Tenaj and I am the Head Mentor of Clouser Castle. Here in the Hall of Mentors we take your questions on genealogical problems. The Duty Mentors do not perform genealogical research, but rather will guide you for instruction or training on genealogy or family research.

Below you will find a some of the sites dedicated to education and learning in the genealogy field that I have used in the past. Also are pages I created to help in your studies.

Learn about the United States Federal Census Records by clicking Here.

When doing genealogy research, one problem people encounter is the need to decipher the meanings of occupations. To better understand these records and the occupations, refer to this list of meanings.

When I was reviewing records, I ran across the word Yeoman. What did it mean. Here you can find yeoman and many other general genealogy terms you may run across during your research.

Try the genealogy courses at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.

One of my favorite sites when I was just beginning family history research was Genealogy Search Advice. This web site will ask you to respond to a series of questions about your particular research problem. Based on your answers, it will produce suggested ideas for where to look for the answer to your research dilemma. While this site is clearly a method designed to get visitors to click through to commercial web sites it is still a classic example of guided discovery using one of the Internet's great strengths.

Another gret site that I ran across is Do History. This site is not specifically designed for genealogists, but it does have a great method of learning old handwriting. The site uses a page from Martha Ballard's Diary (source for A Midwife's Tale) which was written in December of 1789. A java applet allows the visitor to move the "magic lens" over an image of the original document. As you move the "lens", a printed version of the same page is displayed over the manuscript page.
