Introduction:
Mrs. Minnie A. Conklin was born Minnie Adelia Gladwyn at Sackets Harbor, Jefferson County, N. Y. on November 27, 1867 The year of this diary is 1948. Mrs. Conklin was living at the Conklin Farm which is located on the present-day Evans Road in the Town of Hounsfield. She had lived at the property since her marriage in 1897 to Herbert D. Conklin, son of Theodore and Laurentine Wallace Conklin. The reader will note daily references to her family. The home in which Mrs. Conklin lived was a double farmhouse, built in 1897 for two Conklin brothers. In 1948 the home was occupied by Mrs. Conklin (on the northeast side) and her son and family (on the southwest side). The family members who lived in the household were: William: Son Doris: daughter-in-law and mother of 5 grandchildren Elaine: granddaughter Gene: married to Elaine, who left the diarist’s household in October Leonard: grandson Rolla: grandson Shirley: granddaughter Joan: granddaughter An index for this diary was prepared, but will not appear online. This is a diary of a lady who possessed an avid interest not only in her family, but her church, community and current events. Diary transcribed in March of 1994 ENTRIES: Jan. 1, Thurs. To bid farewell to the year, 1947, William and Doris attended a party at E. H. L. (East Hounsfield Library). New Years Day Elaine did typing on a speech for Henry Hudson, who was inaugurated Mayor of Watertown today and he came for it. Gene was at Wm.’s for dinner and in the evening he and Elaine saw, “It Had To Be You.” Jan. 2, Fri. Cold. Gene is writing a paper for school on local government, through vacation and Elaine will type it for him. She and Leonard have no vacation. Henry Wallace has announced his candidacy for President of the U. S. -- also Howard Taft and others. Sen. Vandenburg declines to run. Jan. 3, Sat. As usual, I enjoyed the morning Meditation. Sub.: “The New Year” The New York City and the eastern seaboard are getting rid of surplus snow. Gene and Elaine attended a S. S. class meeting and party at Nellie Lamphear’s. Jan. 4, Sun. The weather moderates. Heard the Asbury service as I could not attnd our own. Dr. McClung preached a fine sermon from the test, “He went a little further.” Wrote to Henrietta Gladwin, who is ill. Elaine went with Gene to S. S. and to dinner. He returned to Utica. Jan. 5, Mon. Gladys Campbell returned to Miss Porter’s school in Farmington, Conn. She called me beforehand on the phone. Also talked with Rosamond and Nellie Ford. Shirley and Joan and Rolla returned to school. Rolla and Fred Fields go to a movie in the evening. Jan. 6, Tues. Heard Gov. Dewey’s annual message to the legislature and Pres. Truman’s annual message to a joint session of the legislature. Both were considered good. Pres. Truman asked for an amount totalling $18,0000,000 for Eastern relief and for the draft and military training. Jan. 7, Wed. Received letters from Helen Hall (Walrath), Rowena Peterson, Marion Dengler and a card from Gladys Campbell telling me that she had arrived at Farmington for the coming semester as teacher of science. Her pupils averaged 95 last year -- college entrance exams. Jan. 8, Thurs. Weather is cold but fine. Mrs. Roosevelt passed through Watertown en route to Montreal to receive a degree at the college. Mayor Henry Hudson, Councilman Newman and Delos Cosgrove had breakfast with her at the Hotel Woodruff. Jan. 9, Fri. Rain changing to snow. More than 650 killed in Palestine since the U. N. voted to partition the country. Talked with Dr. DiFlorio on the phone. Have been making out income tax and unemployment insurance reports. Jan. 10, Sat. Zero morning. Leonard went hunting foxes. Rolla, William and Doris went to E. H. L. in the evening. Elaine worked until 5 P. M., then typed an essay for Gene. Shirley took a music lesson from Grandma (piano). Received a letter from Ross Hill, Czechoslovakia. Jan. 11, Sun. Beautiful day. Elaine went home with him (Gene) for dinner. They returned and she finished typing his school essay, working until late at night. Then, Gene slept awhile and left for Ithaca at 3:30 A.M. He arrived in time for a breakfast and school. Jan. 13, Tues. Bad storm. Put in 53 gallons of oil at 16-1/2 cents. Eddie (Evans) brought me eggs, 60 cents per dozen. No mail. Afternoon school bus came as far as Farmer’s and Leonard went there for Shirley and Joan when he came from work. Rev. Gardner preached yesterday. Jan. 14, Wed. Dr. DiFlorio is sick and wrote to him and Mrs. DiFlorio. Pres. Truman asked Congress for nearly $40,000,000 for government expenses this year. Wrote in reply to Jessie Folsom, Rochester. Wrote a poem to send Mrs. Pond for her birthday. Jan. 15, Thurs. Zero. Heard Mayor Hudson give the opening speech on the “March of Dimes.” There was a mass parachute jump at Pine Camp today. 16 degrees below zero. The cold wave threatens the citrus crop in Florida. Jan. 16, Fri. Still cold. No school bus but mail came. Rec’d a card from Dr. DiFlorio who is ill but improving. Leonard went to a party at Chaumont and stayed overnight with a friend in Theresa. Jan. 17, Sat. Some warmer. Gene, Chuck and Thelma came home for Mrs. Pond’s birthday, but she had gone to Ruth’s to spend her birthday, not knowing the others were coming. Jan. 18, Sun. Mrs. Pond came home Sunday eve. in time to see Gene, Thelma and Chuck before they returned to Ithaca and Cortland. It was a zero day. Gene came for Elaine. I heard the Asbury service, Dr. McClung, pastor. Not feeling well at night. Jan. 19, Mon. Weather severe. Had a cold, etc. This and the entry following were written some time later. Jan. 20, Tues. Had quite a serious illness Jan. 19 and 20 and was confined to bed following it. William and Doris brought my meals. Rolla kindly helped in useful ways. Very appreciative to all my family. Jan. 21, Wed. Mr. E. M. Pond had a serious heart attack as he was leaving his car at Watertown, accompanied by Mrs. Pond and Jack and Grace Lenz. He was taken to Mercy Hospital.
Jan. 22, Thurs. Mr. Pond is in an oxygen tent and is in a serious condition. Thelma came in the night and she and Grace are caring for him. Jan. 23, Fri. Ruth and Gene came home on account of the illness of their father whose condition remains unchanged. Jan. 24, Sat. Gene returned to Ithaca to prepare for next week’s mid-year examinations. (at Cornell University) Jan. 25, Sun. Ruth also returned home. Mr. Pond is still in a serious condition though it looks more hopeful. Dr. DiFlorio is quite sick. Rev. Wm. Gardner preached in his place. Jan. 26, Mon. Weather conditions at sub zero temperatures. Not sitting up any yet. My family is doing all they can for me -- fires, meals, etc., and all is very much appreciated. Jan. 27, Tues. Gene has mid-year examinations four days this week. P.S. And passed all of them. He received 85 on his essay on local government. Jan. 28, Wed. Mr. Pond is now considered out of danger and Thelma has gone home. Received nice letter, fruit and flowers recently from Nellie Ford, who is also confined to her home. Jan. 29, Thurs. A bad storm is blocking the roads and Elaine will not get home from work tonight, but Doris heard from her over the phone. Jan. 30, Fri. Storm continues. Rolla stays home to help. Leonard walks night and morning. Elaine stays nights with Alice Caswell. Jan. 31, Sat. Snowplow went through about noon. Mail brought my annual Feb. 1st letter from Mabel Fulton. Nellie wrote also. All of our young folks at home once more.
Feb. 1, Sun. Anniversary of dear Bert’s death 11 years ago today. Mr. Pond came home from the hospital. Gene also came from Ithaca and came after Elaine. Dr. DiFlorio is still confined to his home. Feb. 2, Mon. The groundhog did see his shadow but signs sometimes fail. Gene and Elaine attended a S. S. class meeting and supper. Feb. 3, Tues. Eleven years ago today I did not expect to survive the shock of my dear husband’s death and funeral. Since I am still here, I hope to be of some use to those around me. Have written a little poem entitled, “Friendship.” (In Times, Feb. 6) Feb. 4, Wed. William’s 45th birthday. They had a birthday dinner, cake, ice cream, and presents. I could not go over but sat up to eat some of the dinner. Feb. 5, Thurs. Gene went to Ithaca in the evening to register at school tomorrow. Rolla went with him for a visit at Hazel Ball’s. They will return tomorrow afternoon. (P. S. Rolla enjoyed it all very much. Went to Thelma’s too.) Feb. 6, Fri. Leonard’s car was disabled in an auto collision on Main Street shortly after midnight. He was returning from a party at Calcium. Rolla and Fred Fields were behind him and assisted in taking it to the International storeroom. Feb. 7, Sat. Leonard went to Watertown to see about buying a used car and thinks he has found a suitable one. Will decide Monday. Also, went to the office to work. Feb. 8, Sun. Elaine and Gene went to church and S. S. and were at his home for dinner. Mr. Pond is improving. He sent me a red rose. They had been sent to him from the church. Feb. 9, Mon. Grace Allen passed away this morning after a long illness. Leonard bought a 1940 Ford car, Deluxe model. An International truck will bring his car that was disabled by the accident home. Feb. 10, Tues. Received “get well” card from several friends and a letter from Praka, Czechoslovakia from Ross Hill, written Jan. 29. Feb. 11, Wed. First day of Lent. Heard Lenten messages by radio to which I am getting up to listen. Grace Allen’s funeral was held today from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Schimmer officiating. Feb. 12, Thurs. Thaws are causing much alarm and some damage by floods along the Mississippi, Ohio and other rivers. There has been a sharp drop in the market prices of corn and wheat. Feb. 13, Fri. Elaine has made a circular black moire silk skirt for herself and Ernie is going to wear it to the High School party Sat. eve. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Buckminster have won a verdict of $1900 in their auto accident case, Carl Hynes, attorney. Feb. 14, Sat. Mr. Pond went to the station to work today after his serious sickness. Gene came home for the weekend. The cold wave that has lasted a month almost continuously seems to be broken. Received two valentines from our girls and Gladys C. and oranges from Elaine. Feb. 15, Sun. First Sunday in Lent. Heard Dr. McClung - radio. Temperance Sunday as set by the Board of Bishops of the Methodist Church. Elaine has a hard cold and was home all day. Gene returned to Ithaca about 7 P. M. Dr. DiFlorio also preached on temperance. Feb. 16, Mon. Mild weather. Began getting my meals myself again this morning. Heard our pastor, Rev. Dr. DiFlorio over WATN. Subject: “My allegiance to Jesus Christ.” Wrote to Mabel Fulton in reply and to her “Feb. 1st” letter. Strong wind in afternoon and at night. Feb. 17, Tues. The troops that have been stationed at Pine Camp for exercise “Snow Drop” are returning to North Carolina. William and Doris went to Watertown and brought me a good supply of groceries at prevailing lower prices. Temperature is expected to reach 40 degrees today. Melting snow is causing inconvenience. Feb. 18, Wed. Daytime temperature 33 degrees. All of the family were about their usual occupations. Elaine has made a pretty white blouse to wear with her new black silk skirt. Wrote a birthday letter to Mrs. B. G. Miller at Folts. Price reductions and politics are the talk of the day. Feb. 19, Thurs. Temperature 40 degrees. Heard Rev. Card, Black River, give a good talk on “The Presence of God.” Psalm 24 and 25. Also a Prof. Thompson gave a talk on the planet, Mars. Wrote to our pastor and wife, Dr. and Mrs. DiFlorio. Glenn Randall called to see us. High daytime temperature 51 degrees. Wind, rain. Feb. 20, Fri. Temperature dropped from 51 degrees to 14 degrees in 15 hrs. Sunny today. Snow going. A colored man won a prize for the best idea on how to save time. It was, “What you do -- Do it good that it won’t hafter be did over again.” Elaine has made a white blouse and a light blue gabardine skirt for herself. Feb. 21, Sat. Our president of the U. S., Harry Truman, is taking a two weeks’ vacation and is now in Puerto Rico. Leonard is dismantling his damaged car preparing to have it fixed for use. All of our family, except Elaine, were away in the evening -- most of them at East Hounsfield Library. Feb. 22, Sun. Heard Dr. McClung give an address on Geo. Washington. Text: There was a man sent from God. Very good. Would like to have been at our own church if my health would permit. Layman’s Day. Those taking part at Asbury were: Frank Walton, Harold Wiley, Judge C. F. Phillips, Glenn Larmuth and Richard Tucker. Feb. 23, Mon. Those taking part in the service yesterday at our church were: Harry Woodworth, Alfred Soper, Leander Adams and Edward Yackel, who gave the address on the subject: “Know Thyself.” Rolla is making some business deals today on mechanical things in which he is interested. Feb. 24, Tues. Weather is more mild. William has a chest cold and Rolla stayed home to do the work. Dr. and Mrs. DiFlorio came and we had a good talk together. Feb. 25, Wed. Rainy morning. Pleasant P. M. William is still confined to the house with a cold and Rolla is home doing the farmwork. He bought a motor from the Finley boys for his boat. And was given a magneto that started a motor that he had. Feb. 26, Thurs. A light snow has made the ground white again. Czechoslovakia is now a communist country almost overnight. England, France and the U. S. are protesting. Wrote a letter and Easter card to Ross Hill, who is stationed at Prague. Palestine question unsettled. Feb. 27, Fri. Grace Congdon brought me a lovely Sunshine Basket from the W. S. C. S. Fruit, candy, jelly, etc. Heard Mayor Hudson’s radio talk on a municipal athletic field. India has pledged to wipe out untouchable caste. 60,000,000 people freed from caste stigma. Feb. 28, Sat. France, Great Britain and U. S. denounce Russian Communist domination in Czechoslovakia. Gene came home for the weekend. Rec’d a letter from Harold Peck telling me of the death of Henrietta Gladwin, my dear friend, Jan. 26th. Also that Norma has gone to Reno for a divorce. March 1, Mon. Mon. All went about their usual Monday morning occupations. Wrote to Edward Chapman, ship U. S. S. Midway. Leonard went to School of Commerce. He took Elaine and brought her home from a S. S. class party for Nellie L. at Nettie Brown’s. They served birthday cake, ice cream and cocoa. March 2, Tues. Some snow and sleet. Wm. and Doris went to Watertown. They bought a new mattress for Rolla’s bed. Wrote to Harold Farr, Wiesbaden, Germany. Harry, Wilma and Ronnie Schweitzer came -- evening. Helen Walrath wrote me about “the P. T. A. meeting and floorshow” at the High School. March 3, Wed. (continued) The P. T. A. had “A Night at the Club Flamingo” with a variety floorshow. 300 attended. Helen W. had charge of the decorations. Alice Gunn -- daughter or granddaughter of Riley Benny did the murals on the wall. Wrote a birthday letter to Myrtle Adams, card, etc. March 4, Thurs. A Red Cross drive to raise $39,495 opened yesterday in the county. Heard Rev. B. Waters. Sub.: The kingdom of God -- a kingdom of service -- break the alabaster box -- beautiful. Wrote a birthday letter, etc. to Helen Walrath. The U. N. is unsettled yet as to the division of Palestine owing to the increasing Arab opposition. March 5, Fri. The overnight low was 19 degrees below zero. Unusual for March. Leonard and Rosemary Lawrence attended the final game of the season at So. Junior High School Wed. eve.: Carthage won. Received a nice letter from cousin, Herma Zachery, from Daytona Beach, Fla., where she and her nurse are spending the winter. March 6, Sat. Continued cold through most of the country. 1-1/3 feet of snow in the middle west. Received a nice letter from Nellie Ford. John and Ramona DeLacy have a daughter named Barbara Jean. Our folks, except Elaine, Shirley and Joan went to East Hounsfield Library. March 7, Sun. Rain and snow flurries. All at home except Leonard. Heard Rev. Dr. McClung, Asbury Church, as usually do when I cannot go to our own church. Sub.: What must I do to be saved? Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Enjoyed the day. March 8, Mon. A snowstorm closed some schools and our children did not go. Wrote to Rev. Barber Waters, Dist. Supt. -- a little letter of appreciation of his recent radio address -- “breaking the alabaster box” -- also of our pastor and wife Dr. and Mrs. DiFlorio. March 9, Tues. Snowstorm did not last long. Overnight low 28 degrees above zero. Gen McArthur has announced his candidacy for Pres. of the U. S. Gov. Dewey won in the New Hampshire primaries today. Letter from Harold Peck. March 10, Wed. Wrote a birthday letter to Rosamond. Rolla decided to help William at home for awhile instead of going to school at Remington’s. He has become quite proficient in the work but is underage to take a position. March 11, Thurs. Colder today. There was an explosion in a Jewish agency in Palestine causing 11 deaths and several (90) injured. Thought to be the work of an Arab truck driver. The truck flew an American flag. Mayor Hudson performed a marriage ceremony Tues. for Constance Hubbard and Ernest Gardner. March 12, Fri. Overnight low 4 degrees below zero. Wrote to and copied poem for Rowena Peterson. William has had a severe attack of piles. Rolla does the work. Elaine is going to Ithaca from work. John Dengler, Lois and Gene will meet her at Syracuse at 7:30 a. m. March 13, Sat. 6 degrees above last night’s low and warmer weather is promised for awhile. Wrote to Nellie and Mabel. Rolla and Fred Fields and others went to Champion to a party last night. Leonard and his girl went to the same party. This is Rosamond’s 46th birthday. March 14, Sun. Pleasant, some warmer. Heard Dr. McClung. He talked on what it means to join a church and why it is essential. Very good. Wrote to Harold Peck and sent Henrietta's last letter. Amelia Hasner had a relapse but is better. Wm. and Doris went to Martin’s. March 15, Mon. Overnight high 43 degrees above. Elaine came home last eve. They brought her as far as Syracuse. The cantata was, Stainer’s, The Crucifixion. Wrote to Gladys C. and Mildred W. (Walrath), and Jean Lee who graduated from Mercy Hospital in Feb. -- is now on the staff of Queen’s Gen. Hospital, Jamaica, L. I. March 16, Tues. Light thunderstorm. A rain has taken most of the snow but it is still icy in our drive. Wrote an Easter card and letter to Grace Post. 155,000 soft coal mine workers are out on strike. Sally Matteson is valedictorian of B. G. P. H. S. Doris Cosselman is salutatorian. March 17, Wed. St. Patrick’s Day. 66 years ago today W. H. Everette, Prin. of Dexter school wrote in my album. Today heard Pres. Truman address Congress on plans to check Russian aggression. Five European countries today sign 50-year pact for that purpose -- Great Britain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg. March 18, Thurs. Mild weather continues. William has hired Mr. Connell of Smithville to make cheese at the Brownville factory. They are putting in a cement floor and some new equipment. The milk goes to Mannsville now at about $4.50 per hundred. March 19, Fri. Warm wind. For three mornings have heard Rev. Moffatt give dialogue on China and missionary work. And today heard the story of the donkey who bore Jesus, given by Rev. Boardman, Rutland Congregational Church. An afternoon rain took snow and ice. Rev. Dr. Clauson spoke at the Avon. March 20, Sat. Spring officially begins at 1 min. before noon today. Mild and springlike. The engagement of Helen Farr to Edward Burke has been announced. Wm. and Doris went to an auction at Calcium. Also to East Hounsfield Library in the evening. March 21, Sun. Mild, windy, rainy P. M. Heard Dr. McClung. Sub.: Christ, the Master of men, the King of Kings. All at home, not much doing, yet enjoyed the day. Gene phoned to Elaine from Ithaca. Disappointed that the weather and my health keep me from our own church. March 22, Mon. Daytime temperature in the 50’s. Elaine is making a black moire silk waist like her ballerina skirt. Leonard went to business school evening and to the office during the day. Congress is debating tax reduction and the aid to Europe budgets or rather, appropriations. March 23, Tues. 51 degrees at 5 P. M. News comes of danger by melting snow and rains that flood Black River and other rivers. The soft coal strike still continues. The Palestine Jew and Arab question remains in dispute and the Jews may declare a free state. March 24, Wed. Nice day. Schools closed this 4 P. M. for an Easter vacation. Leonard took his final test at the School of Commerce evening class and will receive a diploma. They think tonight that Joan has the mumps. She was planning to go to church Easter Sunday. March 25, Thurs. Overnight low 18 degrees above zero. Heard Rev. Lisle B. Caldwell, Alex. Bay in a Meditation on Maundy Thursday. Good. Maundy command -- “love one another” -- last supper. William took Rolla to Dexter and he paid for and brought home the Ford couple that he bought of Mr. Roof -- price $100. He is well pleased with it. Union Service 12 to 3 -- All Souls Church. March 26, Fri. Mrs. Peters and Bernice Barber brought me a white hyacinth from the Happy Thought Class yesterday. Henry Douglas is sick and William went to help them. This is dear little Joan’s 6th birthday. She received a dress, shoes, socks, set of Pyrex dishes and money. Gene came home from school. March 27, Sat. 50 degrees -- showers. Gene and Elaine went to the communion service at our church last evening. Rosamond came for a nice little visit and brought me a white cyclamen. Doris gave me a box of midget caramels and Elaine, a can of asparagus for Easter dinner. March 28, Sun. The ground was white with snow this morning. Heard Dr. McClung. Text: Matt. 27.54. Fine sermon. Gene came for Elaine to go to church, S. S. and to his house for dinner. Joan planned on going to church but has a cold. The Pond family were all home for Easter. March 29, Mon. Fine day. Our church was filled for the Easter service yesterday. Gladys Campbell phoned me there were 250 present. Flowers were in memory of Eva Hall. Wm. and Rolla went to help Henry Douglas. My Quaker heater went out and made work. March 30, Tues. The referendum on the Watertown Municipal Athletic Field resulted in a 2 to 1 vote in favor of the Fair Grounds. This was sponsored by Mayor Hudson. Gene and Elaine went to Pamelia with Leonard and Rosemary last eve. Gene and Elaine went to the movie. March 31, Wed. Mr. Phelps, Henry Hudson, Alice (Caswell), Jennie (Livermore) and Elaine were at Mr. Hudson’s mother’s for lunch yesterday. Gene and Elaine went to Rome and to Ruth’s to take her home this P. M. and will return tomorrow A. M. Leonard went fishing below Dexter (Bay). April 1, Thurs. 71 degrees. Elaine came home, or to the office, from Rome in time to work in the afternoon. She and Gene went to Perch River bridge fishing in the evening. Rolla and Leonard went spearing down at Muscalonge creek and bay. April 2, Fri. Cooler. Amelia Hasner passed away this morning at the Mercy hospital after a long illness. Doris and Wm. went to the house and to Beryl’s. Mrs. Al White -- Myrtle and daughter, Sally, and May Vickery were here. Gene and Elaine spent the evening with Jack and Grace Lenz. April 3, Sat. Cooler. Doris and Ethel Peck ordered flowers for Amelia Hasner’s funeral. Gene and Elaine went to the Howland parlors in the evening. The rest of the family went to the East Hounsfield Library. They had a ham supper. 150 people were there. April 4, Sun. Warmer, P. M. Gene took Elaine and Joan to church and S. S. Leonard, William, Doris and Elaine went to Amelia Hasner’s funeral. Howland parlors. Rev. Frye officiated. I heard Dr. McClung. Sub.: “Make us a blessing” Henry Douglas’s arm is bad. Wm. went to help. April 5, Mon. Cool, fair. Gene returned to Ithaca last evening. Carl Hynes has announced that he is a candidate for state senator. The engagement of Doris Gonseth and Wm. N. West, Binghamton, has been announced. Dr. DiFlorio came and I enjoyed our little visit. Rain came at night. April 6, Tues. There were army day parades throughout the nation and one in Watertown, 7:30. The Wisconsin primaries resulted in 19 votes for Stasson, 8 for McArthur. Rolla went spearing at the Creek with some young friends. William is still helping Henry Douglas. April 7, Wed. High 58 deg. Wrote to Mrs. Fairley about Henrietta Gladwin’s death. Rec’d a nice letter from Nellie Ford. Soft coal workers are still on strike and hard coal workers are striking in sympathy. Heard Rev. Card, Jr., Black River. Subject: Affection. April 8, Thurs. Cold wind. Gene came home last eve and took Elaine to work this morning. He will study at the Park or some quiet place preparing for a quiz Mon. The coal strike situation is getting serious as railroads, steel and other plants cut to 50% and men cannot work. April 9, Fri. Another day of cold wind. Wrote to Nellie Ford in answer to her nice letter. Wm. and Doris went to Chaumont in the evening with Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Cean. The grass is getting green in the orchard. Wind and rain prevented going to church. Heard Dr. McClung. “Now we know in part,” but then Gene and Elaine attended the S. S. class meeting last eve. Wm., Doris, Rolla, Shirley and Joan went to bingo party at E. H. L. Shirley won sugar, Wm., a knife. Elaine at Gene’s for dinner. Gene returned to Ithaca April 12, Mon. Calm, mild. The radio says that the storm yesterday was the worst in years and did considerable damage. The Ganter barn burned. Our telephone line is down. John L. Lewis has called the coal strike settled but he still faces a contempt of court. Mrs. Roosevelt unveiled a statue of her husband in London. April 13, Tues. Cool, cloudy. Cold wind -- had a fire. Joan finished her First Piano Book begun Oct. 25, ‘47. Shirley went to Sackets in the evening for band rehearsal. John L. Lewis had to appear in federal court for not calling off the coal strike nine days ago as requested by the government. District W. S. C. S. met at Asbury. April 15, Thurs. Quite cold. Celia Evans fell on the barn floor this morning. Doris went with her in the Johnson ambulance to Mercy hospital. X-Rays showed a fracture of the left leg below the hip. Wrote to Carl Dillenbeck, (and) W. S. C. S. Phoned to Rosamond. There is heavy fighting in Palestine between Jews and Arabs. April 16, Fri. Milder, rain. Doris and William went to the hospital with Eddie Evans to see Celia. She isn’t feeling very comfortable today. The fractured leg is to be “pinned” instead of set, Tues. Delayed on account of the blood test, she thinks. Dr. David Gregor is attending the fracture. April 17, Sat. Leonard took Eddie Evans to the hospital to see Celia. Rolla helps with the farmwork for them. Elaine selected white flowers and ribbon for my hat and trimmed it. She also found a pretty gray and white rayon dress for me at Empsall’s and it fits me nicely. April 18, Sun. A fine spring day. Wm. took Joan and me to church and S. S. and it seemed good to go. Sub. of Dr. DiFlorio’s sermon was, “The Way -- Christ.” Gene came home for Elaine to type a school paper for him. Subject, “Collective bargaining.” Gene returned to Ithaca. April 19, Mon. William and Doris went with Eddie to see Celia. The doctor thinks now it is the hip that is fractured. She is discouraged, of course. Burma makes the 57th nation admitted to the U. N. Walter Farmer’s mother has passed away at his home and William and Doris went there in the evening. April 20, Tues. Rainy morn but cleared. Raining again toward night. Dorcas Ball and Marion and John Dengler came from Ithaca in John’s new car -- a Chevrolet. Doris had them for supper and I was invited. Thunderstorm before they left at about 8:30. Doris has a cold and sore throat. April 21, Wed. The Christian Democratic party won over the Socialist and Communist groups by a large majority in the national election in Italy. Wm. went with Eddie to see Celia. They plan to set her hip to-morrow at 9 A. M. Ground is to be broken at the airport today at 4 P. M. for a $60,000 administration bldg. April 22, Thurs. Mrs. Clara Nott Owens in company with Mr. and Mrs. Allen came to see me today. The Gilmore’s have returned from Alabama and he came over here. Celia Evans had the operation of pinning her fractured hip at 9 A. M. Hospital reports her comfortable tonight. April 23, Fri. Rolla’s 18th birthday. It was a busy day for him -- work at Eddie’s and at home. A six o’clock dinner, just the family -- roast beef, birthday cake, etc. and gifts. He received $9.92 in money and from Leonard, a fishing pole. Wm. went with Eddie to see Celia. It was a bad hip break and she is very tired. April 24, Sat. A nice day. Have a cold. Wrote to Allen Phillips and to Mrs. Clara Owens about the cemetery lot of her grandfather, which needed work done on it. William Congdon is reported to be seriously ill at his home near Dexter. April 25, Sun. Am sick with grip. None of us went to church. Elaine took Eddie to see Celia. She is quite uncomfortable and discouraged. She is in a bad condition. April 26, Mon. Received a nice letter from Mrs. W. J. Fairley, Los Angeles, telling me more about Henrietta Gladwin’s death. Dr. DiFlorio is on station WWNY each morning this week. Mary Lisle Herman (sic) sang two selections playing her own accompaniment. April 27, Tues. Still feeling badly from a grip cold. The young folks’ choir sang two selections for Dr. DiFlorio at the WWNY service. Wm. and Doris took Eddie to see Celia. Not very comfortable yet. They also got groceries for themselves and me. April 28, Wed. Wava Cassel and Mattison sang for Dr DiFlorio’s radio Meditation. His subject was Matthew, author of the greatest book ever written. Wrote to Harold Peck sending Mrs. Fairley’s letter which he will be pleased to get. April 29, Thurs. William and Doris attended the wedding of Maurice Mitchell and Irma Siver at the Catholic Church, Brownville at 9 A. M. They also went to the reception at the house. William bought Leonard’s car that was in the accident. April 30, Fri. Rainy afternoon. My grip cold is improving but took my strength. Mrs. Owens wrote and I answered with a few lines to send her by Elaine. May 1, Sat. 4-H Clubs from the surrounding country had a parade at noon in Watertown. Shirley played in the Sackets school band. All of our family except Rolla and I were there. Gene came home in the early evening and came after Elaine. May 2, Sun. Gene and Elaine went to church and S. S. -- to Pond’s for dinner and Doris’ for supper and Gene returned to Ithaca. Wm. and Doris went fishing with Rosamond. My callers were Rosamond, Nellie Lamphear, Nellie Ford, Mabel Fulton, who brought me flowers, and Gene. May 3, Mon. Leonard went fishing with B. Gilmore at the Creek last eve with success. So we had fish today. Wilfred Chapman called on me and stayed at Wm’s for supper. Dr. and Mrs. DiFlorio came in the evening. Am still quite sick with a grip cold. May 4, Tues. William and Rolla have two tractors going. All busy, except me. I can see plum blossoms. (on Cean property). I think they are. Shirley brought me English currant fragrant blossoms and wild cherry blossoms. May 5, Wed. William and Rolla sowed oats and barley toward the crossroad. Doris and the girls work around the yard at night. The boys go fishing some evenings. I get my meals. Gene passed 96 on the paper on Collective bargaining which Elaine typed for him. May 6, Thurs. Warm. The men are fitting land for grain. Wrote a letter to Mrs. W. J. Fairley, Los A, thanking her for her letter about Henrietta Gladwin’s death, etc. William and Doris spent the evening at Dr. DiFlorio’s. Elaine and our girls went to a minstrel show at Brown mansion and then to Dr. DiFlorio’s. May 7, Fri. Rainy. Elaine called to see Mrs. Clara Owens yesterday. Ithaca cousins had a birthday dinner and cake for Gene yesterday. Wm. and Doris went to W with Rolla to see about insurance on his car from Seaver and Peck. Leonard is being promoted to Murray Phillips’ place in the office soon. May 8, Sat. 34 degrees, wind, rain. Mr. and Mrs. Lingenfelter announced the engagement of Jean Esther to Barber Waters, Jr. The wedding will be in Asbury church, June 1. Earl Hall had a stroke and is in the hospital. No details except that one side is paralyzed. Rec’d nice Mother’s Day cards and gifts from my family. May 9, Sun. Heard the Asbury service in bed, but get my meals. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Douglas were at Wm’s for dinner. Elaine brought me strawberry shortcake. Our pastor, Rev. Pascal DiFlorio, brought me lovely flowers from church. Elaine went with Eddie to see Celia. Earl Hall remains unchanged. May 10, Mon. Cold, rainy. This was my dear mother’s birthday. It is 47 years since her last birthday. And her daughter, Minnie, now 80 still misses her. Elaine had lunch with Pauline (Brown). The land is too wet for sowing grain. William and Doris attended the annual cheese factory meeting. M. B. Gilmore, Pres., Doris, Secy-Treas. May 11, Tues. Warmer, fair. General Conference has been in session at Boston. They advocate world unity of churches, prohibition, etc. Government taken over railroads due to strike. I wrote to Helen Walrath about her father and also rec’d a card and letter from her. He knows them. Grace Lenz is his night nurse. May 12, Wed. Heard Rev. Robt. Wright on WWNY and Mrs. Wright, WATN, on home influence. Watertown voted for a new High School, preference Wash. St. Mrs. DiFlorio and Mrs. Ball came and brought me fruit cupcakes, ice cream and a plant from themselves and the Happy Thought S. S. class members. May 13, Thurs. Heard Robt. Wright, “Abide,” and Robt. Youngs, “Pentecost.” Alfred Emerson and Patrick Hagan are going to Alaska. Ada Schwartz Babcock took her life in the Dexter canal. Am receiving get well cards from members of the Happy Thought Class. Celia has been in the hospital 4 weeks. May 14, Fri. Rainy day. Elaine bought a linoleum bedroom rug as a Mother’s Day gift for Doris. The British gave up their 30 yr. mandate in Palestine and the Jews organize a new nation called “Israel.” The U. S. was the first to recognize the new nation. Wm. and Doris bought a refrigerator for the cheese factory. May 15, Sat. Gene came home last eve and spent the afternoon and evening with Elaine. Wm., Doris, Shirley, Joan, Gene and Elaine went to bingo party at E. H. Library. The new Jewish flag is blue and white with a yellow star of David and is flying over government buildings. Earl Hall is reported to be holding his own at Mercy Hospital. The new nation, Israel, is fighting for its life with the Arabs. May 17, Mon. All went about usual tasks. Heard Rev. Barnard, “Sweet - Hour of Prayer.” Elaine selected pretty material for a new curtain for my kitchen window. Telaviv (sic) is the present capital of the new state of Israel. Dr. Chains Weisman is the provisional president. May 19, Wed. Cooler. Made my new curtains and they are very pretty. Nellie Ford phoned that Earl Hall is coming home from the hospital with left side helpless. An X-ray revealed that Celia Evans is suffering from a lung condition. She thought it was pleurisy. May 20, Thurs. Cold wind. The Jews and Arabs are fighting for Jerusalem and are destroying sacred places. Wm. went to court to testify for Jim Gilmore over the airport hay. Doris bought a new bed for their room. Rolla got raspberry plants at Rosamond’s and brought them down with their Farmall. May 21, Fri. Rainy day. Doris bought linoleum for her dining room. That and her new bed came today. Also my new linoleum for my kitchen which Elaine selected for me -- pretty. Rec’d nice letters from Mrs. Miller and Nellie Ford. Feeling better today. May 22, Sat. Rain has fallen 15 out of the past 16 days. Shirley played in the band at school festival at Dexter High School. Four schools took part. Doris went to the hospital to see Celia. The U. N. has ordered the Arabs and Jews to cease firing at noon today. The Jews agreed but so far the Arabs have refused to do it. An extension of 36 hours was granted for consideration. May 25, Tues. Jim Gilmore settled his suit against the city of Watertown for $1,100. The amount he asked was $5,000. The worst battle in 2,000 years in Palestine is raging for possession of Jerusalem. Holly shrines are being destroyed. The U. N. is endeavoring to stop it. Wrote to Mrs. Miller. Wm. and Doris took Rolla to Dr. Livingston last eve for an infection in his arm caused by ringworm. Elaine took Shirley and Joan to the King circus -- evening. Shirley and Joan marched in the Memorial Day parade at Sackets Harbor and Shirley played in the band. Elaine and Leonard had a holiday but worked at home. Wrote to Rev. H. Harrison asking his support for Carl Hynes for state senator. There were 300 weekend casualties (deaths). June 1, Tues. A fine day. Dr. DiFlorio came and I was very glad to see him. Jews and Arabs have headed a U. N. delegate appeal for a truce for 30 days. Elaine is making a dress she gave me the material for Christmas. Dikes on the Columbia R have broken due to floods. (Starkweather), and Ethel W. (Williamson) came last eve. Brought me flowers and orange juice. The Methodist camp at Brantingham Lake has been named Camp Aldersgate. This date should be June 4. June 4, Fri. Wrote a letter to my 80-year old friend, Ida Northrup, who is in the House of the Good Samaritan with a fractured leg. Wm. and Rolla have sown 4 bu. of silo corn. Ida Parker has a daughter, Brenda Louise. Harold Hunter’s have another daughter (Apr. 2) named Barbara Jean. June 5, Sat. Cool. Ralph and Elsie Parker have a baby grandson in Calif., a son of Charles. Heard Rev. Gair, “The Faultless Christ.” Tomorrow is the 4th anniversary of D-Day. Pres. Truman is at a reunion of buddies of World War I at Omaha. 150,000 there. He is making a two weeks’ speaking tour of the west. Other candidates are busy. June 6, Sun. Heard Dr. McClung, radio. June 8, Tues. 52 degrees, little rain. Pleasant P. M. Wrote to Harold Peck. Have my correspondence nearly caught up. Gene finished his studies at Cornell and came home. Graduation is June 14. He has had several offers for a position but hasn’t decided. He wanted to talk it over with Elaine. June 9, Wed. Jews and Arabs have agreed to a four weeks’ truce to begin Friday at noon. The truce was requested by the U. N. mediator, Count Bernadette. Gene has been getting references to be sent to Cornell. He and Elaine went to Sandy Creek in the evening to see Uncle Dexter Woodson. Weather continues cool and damp. June 10, Thurs. Earl Hall is home from the hospital. Jessie Hall’s mother has passed away. Rolla’s car insurance is coming. He has license plates No. 6P27-91. Talked with Mabel, phone. Nellie not improved. Doris has a new dress and coat. Leonard gets a raise in salary at the International office. June 11, Fri. Hester Gilmore was here. Helen phoned that Earl was on the sunporch. Jean Esther Lingenfelter and Barber Waters, Jr. were married at 8 P. M. in Asbury church by Rev. Daniel T. Hill. Gene and Elaine went to Ithaca for the weekend and graduation and to make application for a position. June 12, Sat. Doris got a new black suit, very good looking. Private funeral services for Lucy Hall, 94, were conducted at 11 A. M. at the home by Dr. DiFloriio. I wrote to Jessie and to Helen Walrath. Mr. and Mrs. John Kellogg have a daughter, Virginia Evans, born June 11, City Hospital. June 13, Sun. Cool, pleasant. Heard a radio flag day program. Leonard took Shirley to Sackets Harbor to play in the band for a 100th anniversary of the Masonic order. Mrs. DiFlorio and Jessie Hall came, brought me flowers from Mrs. Hall’s funeral. William has a hard cold, but is treating it, in hopes to go to Ithaca. June 14, Mon. A very fine day. Mr. and Mrs. Pond and William and Doris left for Ithaca at 4:15 A. M. to be present at Gene’s graduation. They arrived home about 10 P. M. All of the Pond family went except Glen and Chuck. They ate a picnic dinner at Tremaine’s Park. Gene has a position with the G. L. F. at Waterville. June 15, Tues. Wm. and Doris changed the license plates to the car they bought from Leonard. Rolla paid his insurance and will take his test for a license soon. Gene and Elaine went to the outdoor show. The truce observances sent by the U. N. are keeping peace in Palestine. June 16, Wed. Helen Farr and Edward Burke were married June 6. Received a nice letter from Nellie F. June 17, Thurs. Rolla took his test for a driver’s license. Gene took Elaine to the office and then went trout fishing with his Uncle Winnie. Gene caught four and Uncle gave him his. In the evening Gene and Elaine went to a bingo game at Holy Family church. June 18, Fri. 62 degrees, A. M. Rolla passed his test and has a driver’s license until Sept. 1950. Doris put down her new linoleum dining room rug. Elaine went to Pond’s for a trout supper. Weather continues cool. William cultivated corn. Put in 54 gals. of oil. June 19, Sat. Cool. The draft bill for boys from 18 to 25 passed and goes to the Pres. for signing.

June 20, Sun. Gene came for Elaine to go to church and S. S. He left for Ruth’s at 4:30 where he will stay tonight and report for work at the G. L. F., Waterville, tomorrow. William, Doris, Shirley and Joan went to Henderson Harbor. Leonard went fishing. Rolla was over to Donald Farr’s. I heard the Asbury service. June 21, Mon. Radio -- Rev. Niles. “Our lives are organs. We, the organists.” Summer came at 11 A. M. It was a real summer day. All of our family went about their usual occupations. The G. O. P. convention opened in Philadelphia with seven candidates hoping to be nominated for President. Heard keynote G. O. P. Gov. Green, Ill. June 22, Tues. Radio, Rev. H. G. Whedon, D. D., Sub.: “Little Boy Blue.” Doris did a large washing. Wm. cultivated corn. Leonard has new fenders for his car. The G. O. P. leaders are busy at Phila. Gene has long hours. Celia Evans came home from the hospital to the White Nursing Home. Gene is busy at Waterville. Rolla took Elaine over to the church to play for choir rehearsal. June 24, Thurs. 83 degrees -- 10 A. M. Had a thunderstorm last night. Rev. Dr. Miller had a heart attack at the cottage at No. Shore., Tues. Passed away Wed., P. M. Gov. Dewey was selected unanimously as the Republican candidate for President. It came on the third ballot and he responded extemporaneously. June 25, Fri. Radio. Dr. Whedon, “Little Bo Peep.” Gov. Earl Warren, California, received by acclamation the nomination for Vice Pres. at the G. O. P. conv. Doris, Shirley and Joan went strawberrying. Wrote to Nellie Ford. Sally Matteson is valedictorian. June 26, Sat. School closed yesterday noon for Shirley and Joan. Both made their grades. Joan will be in II and Shirley, VI. Wm. and Doris went to an auction at Grant Ketcham’s. Gene arrived home about 10 P. M. and came over. He has had a busy week and was weary. June 27, Sun. Went to church for the first time since had the grip. Enjoyed it. Rolla took us and came after me. Elaine played in church and S. S. and went to Gene’s for dinner. Then they went to a cottage on North Shore where Ruth and Walt are staying for a week. June 28, Mon. Gene returned to Waterville at ? P. M. yesterday. Mailed cards with letter to Hazel B., Celia E., and to Anita DiFlorio. Sent Upper Room to Helen W. and Mildred Walrath. Elaine played at Edith Henderson’s recital at Asbury church at 8 P. M. June 29, Tues. Anita DiFlorio and John Shay were married at 11 A. M. in our church by Rev. Dr. DiFlorio and Elaine played and attended the reception at the parsonage. They will go to Washington for the summer and then to Potsdam where Mr. Shay attends the state normal. Eddie Evans isn’t well. June 30, Wed. Leonard has been talking with Eddie E about buying his farm but it hasn’t materialized. We had quite a thunderstorm last night. This evening Elaine is at Ruth’s cottage. The dead in the Japanese quake will total 5,000. July 1, Thurs. New York subway fare is raised to 10 cents. 24,000 men are expected to train this summer at Pine Camp. John House has passed away. He worked here when a boy and we liked him. Rolla is enjoying his Ford coupe. He went to Smithville last evening to see Fred Fields. July 2, Fri. Cool. Overnight low was 50 degrees. Leonard’s hound, Lucy, has two pups, one tan or brown and the other white. She has had them hidden under the barn. I phoned to Mabel. Nellie not as well this week. I hope to go and see her soon. July 3, Sat. Wm., Doris, Shirley and Joan went to Sackets Harbor, evening, where Shirley played in the school band at a celebration marking an old home week. Gene came home from Waterville and he and Elaine went to Ruth’s cottage. Leonard went fishing with Hiram Fulton. July 4, Sun. Wm., Doris, Leonard, Shirley and Joan went to Martins (Hasner) cottage. They were invited for dinner. Elaine and Gene are at Ruth’s cottage for the day and here, evening. He came after William and Doris and they (Doris) went and broke the sad news to Celia who is at Mrs. White’s and they have been busy. July 8, Thurs. William and Doris have made the arrangements for Eddie’s funeral and attended to legal business. Johnson’s ambulance took Celia home at 4 P. M. to be there for the funeral tomorrow. Leonard took Elaine, Shirley, Joan and I down to see her. July 9, Fri. Wm. and Doris went to Eddie’s funeral at his home today at 2 P. M. Dr. DiFlorio officiated. William was a bearer. Will, Cora, and Pearl Congdon came to see me after the funeral. An auction of eight cows was held in the evening. Hester Gilmore came and stayed with me. July 10, Sat. Balls, Denglers and Millars came. Doris served the dinner. Celia went back to the White Nursing Home, 2 P. M. in an ambulance. The auction came out as well as expected and William and Doris took the proceeds to her lawyer, Charlie Phelps, to be deposited. They had on hand $1,890.00. Gene came home late. July 11, Sun. Planned to go to see Earl Hall and then to church but heart would not permit. Wm. and Elaine went to see him. Elaine played in church and went to Gene’s for dinner. He returned to Waterville. Celia may sell her farm and Gene is considering it. July 12, Mon. 80 degrees -- 10 A. M. William and Rolla have started haying. Doris did a large washing. The rest went about their usual work. Dr. Fox came and says, “Keep Quiet.” Doris served green peas from the garden. Eddie Crosby was going to a swimming pool near Cape Vincent with Ann Oter on the fender. She fell off and was killed. Doris, Shirley and Joan went to W and bought two new dresses for Shirley’s birthday and a skirt for Joan. Rolla brought his radio to me to use in my room. Elaine had two prescriptions filled for me. July 22, Thurs. Cooler. Wm. and Rolla are haying. They drew seven loads yesterday. Leonard has a new hound named Daisy. He traded Rusty and Lucy for him. (?) Eddie Crosby loses his car license until he is 21. The Youngs family were with Doris for dinner. There is peace in Palestine. Beryl came in for a short visit and I enjoyed it. Bert Gilmore brought Shirley and Joan a small turtle. Expect Joe and Eva Meyer have crossed the Int. Bridge. We couldn't’ have them because of my heart condition. Aug. 20, Fri. Elaine, Shirley and Joan went to the County Fair from 5:30 to 8 P. M. last eve. Rolla got $29.00 for his share from old iron at Celia’s. Rec’d grapefruit juice from Happy Thought Class. Elaine had her new Stroock coat shortened and brought it home tonight. It is nice. Note: A reader, L. M. O'Konek, wrote me that Stroock was a manufacturer of fine coats and other textiles. She said she has a carriage robe that was made by them. William and Doris went to Ruth Farmer’s in the evening. She sent me a nice bedchair to use but may not need it. Sit about 5 hrs. daily in an easy chair. August 25, Wed. 76 degrees -- 9 A. M. This seems like the hottest day so far. Fred Fields brought a cement mixer and went to Evans Mills for lumber for a trough at the cow barn that William is making. William had a bad toothache. Henry Wise received the nomination for State Senator at the primaries. August 26, Thurs. Another hot day. Doris went to dentist Stabin with William where he had an ulcered tooth drawn. Wrote to Nellie Ford (a card) at the Sanatorium. Elaine was invited to Mayor Hudson’s mother’s for lunch. Gene has found an apartment and wants Elaine to see it. August 27, Fri. Mabel phoned that Nellie didn’t notice her last night. Dr. DiFlorio talked with her yesterday morning. William’s face is swollen and painful. Mrs. Smith phoned. She is coming (someday) to see me. Barns on the former Otis Lonsdale farm, Pillar Point, burned last night. Cause -- green hay. Doris has remade Joan’s “formal” and bought pale yellow silk for one for Shirley for Elaine’s wedding. Joan’s is blue with white net. We need rain badly. Sept. 9, Thurs. 72 degrees -- 9 A. M. Humid. Mr. Conway, garage man, Brownville, asked Rolla to work for him for $35 week. He may begin Monday. I heard the Asbury service. Helen Parker graduated as a nurse Sat., Syracuse Hospital. Sally Matteson is in training, House of Good Samaritan. I think Gene and Elaine went to see Rowena Peterson. Some snow came today. Joan went to schol. Shirley is feeling better. Received a long cheerful letter from Ross Hill from Prague. He has ten months more to serve. Started writing my Christmas cards, some with short letters. Rolla and Fred Fields left for Gananoque about 7:40 P. M. Doris is making tatting. Dec. 9, Thurs. 35 degrees -- 9 A. M. Snow, P. M. Radio: Guest preacher, Rev. Griffith. Text: Psalm 45.15. Good talk. Doris and Rolla went to Watertown shopping, etc. Shirley did shopping at noon at Sackets. My last poem, “Roses in December,” was in The Times. Mabel Fulton phoned a message and news for me. Wrote several Christmas cards. Dec. 10, Fri. 36 degrees, N. Cold wind, fair. Heard Dr. DiFlorio and our junior choir, “Genealogy of Christ. Character acquired not inherited.” Among Christmas mail was a card and letter from Myrtle Adams. William put a spring in his car to replace the broken one. John Dengler went hunting and got a deer. Marion wrote to Doris. Wm. and Doris were away for the evening, also Leonard. Dec. 11, Sat. Much colder. U. R., Psalm 27. Georgia Eberling, “Lift me into Thy strength.” Wm. and Doris left for Elaine’s about 2 P. M. and plan to stay overnight. The rest are here. Marion Farrington wrote a nice letter about my poem. Leonard will type it for distant friends. Shirley got a nice supper. The Gilmores came -- Hester came in to see me. Rolla went to ---?---. Dec. 12, Sun. 38 degrees, morning. Rain. Heard Mr. McConnell, layman 1st Presbyterian Church, city, a practical talk. Also the Gouverneur Male Chorus, 40 pieces, American Legion. Good. Wm. and Doris arrived home from Elaine’s at 3:20 P. M. Had snow, sleet and rain and icy roads. Had a good time there. We were all right here while they were away. William and Doris went to Watertown Christmas shopping in the P. M. They played Santa pretty good I guess. Orton Sills have a daughter. Shirley went to school. Leonard brought home a Christmas balsam tree. The girls have been making chains for it. Rosemary came, too. Princess Elizabeth’s baby will be christened Prince Charles Phillip, etc. of Edinburgh (sic). Dec. 15, Wed. 22 degrees -- 9 A. M. Radio: Rev. Gair, “A kind Christmas.” Rev. McClung, “Intercessary prayer.” Everything responds to the Christmas spirit -- the radio, the mail and conversation. The children have the tree lighted tonight and they are singing carols. William has a hard cold. Fred Fields came to see Rolla and they went away in the eve. Dec. 16, Thurs. 35 degrees -- A. M. Rain, cloudy. Radio, Dr. McClung, “Prayer Plus.” Rabbi Gordon. “The Creation, man.” Wm. and Doris both have colds. Girls at school. Boys at work. I write and receive Christmas mail. Beryl, Lew and Bert Gilmore came to William’s in the evening. The men played Rook. Beryl came in to see me and I enjoyed it. Mrs. Taylor and Rosamond have opened their yarn and antique shop. Hetherington, “Christmas Spirit.” Mrs. Jennie Countryman was injured by a car driven by John De Lacy and a car from Cape V. Girls at school. Boys at work. Finished writing my Christmas cards. Have received 72 cards and a number of letters so far. Word came that Jessie Hall is sick, temperature with cold. Earl Hall had two more convulsions today. Wm. and Doris went to W to deposit cheese factory check and finish Christmas shopping. They got a pork loin and a beef roast for Christmas and the weekend. Shirley, Joan and Rolla were here. Leonard showed me gifts he has bought. Martin and Edith (Hasner) came and brought gifts. Dec. 24, Fri. 14 degrees A. M. Cold, but fine. Bishop Peabody, "Fear not. Yes, but, -- a plea for displaced people." Rev. Cooke, "A little bit of love." The music of Christmas is laughter. The need of Christmas is friendship. The spirit of Christmas is love. All of the family are busy with the Christmas preparations. I have rec'd 83 cards. Ethel Peck sent the family popcorn balls, candy & nuts. Leonard wrapped his gifts here. Dec. 25, Sat. 20 degrees A. M. Cold. Gene and Elaine left Waterville at 4:30 A. M. , arrived here at 8:30 A. M. Had a fine tree and dinner. The family gave me an electric clock and other useful gifts. Rosamond and her girls brought me a white wool house coat. A wonderful day. Gene and Elaine came back from Pond's for lunch and overnight. Leonard took dresser set to Rosemary. Dec. 26, Sun. Minus 12 degrees -- 10 A. M. Fair, but cold. Dr. McClung, What is Spirituality?" Rom. 8, 9. Fine New Year Prayer. Gene's car responded after Rolla's car towed it aways. Gene and Elaine left about 1 P. M. for dinner at Mrs. Pond's and return early to Waterville. They say it was 18 degrees below zero at Brownville this morning. This has been a very nice Christmas season for all of us. Dec. 27, Mon. A cold storm. Radio: Rev. Moffatt, New Year resolutions. No race prejudice (unclear), Bible study, good books, service for the church, good useful lives. Leonard went to the office. Roads getting icy tonight as weather moderates. 266 (or more) traffic casualties over the weekend. Fred Fields came over, P. M. Dec. 28, Tues. 33 degrees, A. M. -- Mostly fair. It seems good to have it warmer. Doris has another chest cold. Wm. helps with housework. Rolla does work at the barn. Leonard at office. Girls playing, also helping. I wrote to Ithaca cousins. William made butter. Fred Fields came to see Rolla. Dr. DiFlorio came for a call and brought Upper Rooms and a Christmas bag of candy and oranges. Dec. 29, Wed. 46 degrees, Moon. Rain. Thought for the day, "How to be happy." Doris still sick with cold but sat up some and did what she could. The rest helped. Rolla and Fred Fields went to Watertown on car business. Wrote to Ora Fuller, Detrooit. Mailed Upper Room to Elaine. Leonard spent the evening at Gilmore's. The U. N. is seeking for peace in Palestine and Indonesia. Dec. 30, Thurs. 30 degrees, Noon. Sleetstorm. Heard Rev. Moffatt, Hilltop views. Rev. Borden, "New Year Thoughts." William put in a new pipe damper, etc. in my stove. Doris up but has a hard cold. Wrote letter to Ethel Peck and a card to Iva Zimmerman. Rec'd a nice letter from Harold Peck and a picture of Eleanor and Carol and their Christmas tree. Sleet changed to snow in P. M. Mayor Hudson spoke on radio. Dec. 31, Fri. 24 degrees -- 9 A. M. Snow. Radio: Rev. Moffatt, Genesis 1.1 and Auld Lang Syne, by Robert Burns. Good. Gladys Campbell phoned and I talked with her. Leonard's essay on the Life of Gen. Brown ($10.00 prize) is in North Country Life. Wm. and Doris went to Library party. Leonard went to Gilmore's. Rolla and the girls with me.
