THE 1952 DIARY OF MINNIE A. CONKLIN

Dexter-Brownville, Jefferson County, New York

Minnie’s 1952 diary was transcribed in 1987. Minnie turns age 85 in November. She lives in one half of the double farmhouse built at the turn of the century by her husband and his brother. The home was one and a half miles from Paddy Hill near Brownville, N. Y. The second half of the home is occupied by her adopted son, William, his wife, Doris, and their five children. Minnie is still maintaining her home, doing most of her own housework, and during this particular year, enjoyed good health all year.

You will see her days are filled with the comings and goings of friends and family. She does not attend church at any time during this year, as was her custom in years past. She was able to get around, but this transcriber, her grand-daughter, does not remember her going out of the house at all. A significant feature of Minnie’s life were her weather observations, including the temperature, the daily devotionals heard on radio each morning, the world news and politics. This transcription, for the most part, does not include her detailed text for each of these strong interests.
