February 17 - Mrs. Gladwyn went up to see Minnie Monday morning (the 14th) and I went up in the evening. Minnie has a hard cold and congestion of her lungs -- I came home Wednesday morning. Mrs. Gladwyn is still there -- Worked in the shop today. It is pleasant weather but quite cold - news of the sinking of the war-ship “Maine” at Havana received today --

The weather changed Saturday -- yesterday was a rainy day with high westerly winds -- We have had beautiful - fine - warm weather since Feb. 27th (16 days) -- Robins were here Saturday -- None of us went to church yesterday -- we miss the church services very much, but the Lord knows best -- I think I am some better in health - but it is a slow gain - Saw the Dr. this afternoon he changed the medicine some - Got our seeds from Vick --

March 31 - (Thursday). The month now past has been the finest March I have ever seen -- no snow - but little rain - many bright sunny days -- The farmers are plowing and sowing some -- I saw a fine butterfly yesterday -- the maple sugar season has been fine but short. In 1867 (the first time I came to Dexter) the later part of March was similar to this with farmers sowing grain on the 26th of the month. The winter all through has been mild and fine -- yet there has been more good sleighing than most. I made a hot-bed and trimmed some bushes but I cannot work much -- I do not improve much yet -- it is 5 weeks since I was taken down --

May 28 - (Saturday evening). Worked in the shop all this week this is the first full week this year up to now -- It has been a very fine growing week with light showers -- it is quite warm -- finished planting my garden this evening -- there is a prospect of a bounteous crop of hay & grain -- but prices are very low except for flour which is about $2.00 per sack -- this comes from speculation in what -- not from a shortage or on account of the war. The war is progressing very slowly -- no news from Cuba of importance. Mrs. Gladwyn went with Mrs. Yerdon to see Minnie on Wednesday they come home in the evening -- Minnie has been sick with a hard cold. The week has been a hard one for me; alone in the shop and I am far from well yet --

May 30 - (Monday evening). We went to church yesterday in afternoon there was a small attendance -- it was quite rainy at Sunday school time but it cleared away afterwards -- In the evening we attended the Decoration day memorial service at the Episcopal church -- it was good -- We have been at home all day today -- it has been damp and lowry -- we did not go to the cemetery -- Most of the Decoration service was at Brownville this year -- We looked for Minnie to come home today -- but she did not come.

The year (1898) that is now past and gone into eternity has been a very peculiar and eventful one.

Last winter was find with good sleighing most of the time and a very early spring. It was somewhat dry during the early summer, but we have had a bounteous harvest and business has so much revived that “Reports” at the close of the year are that it has been the most prosperous year the country has ever known.

This fall, snow came early and the winter (so far) has been severe --

The Memorandum of the year for me has had some leadings of Devine providence that seem strange but I can say “he doeth all things well.” My health has been poor -- I have spent much for doctors. Work has been the least I have ever known in the shop -- I earned but $148.00 -- In the later part of the year Mrs. Gladwyn’s health entirely failed -- and now at the close of the year we find ourselves two old people -- broken in health and the way looks somewhat dark -- but the Lord has blessed us in so many ways and we have lacked for nothing -- we are pleasantly situated.

This closes up the old year of 1899 -- it has been an eventful one in many respects -- Mrs. Gladwyn and myself have not been very well but we have been spared and our health has improved. I have earned more than last year but not as much as in years before -- business throughout the country has been greatly revived and prices (except on labor) greatly advanced -- The weather of the year has been also peculiar -- it has been a summer of very dry weather -- the dryest in the memory of some of the oldest inhabitance -- but the drouth commenced late enough so we have had very fine crops -- The fall was the finest I have every seen since I was a boy at home. The Lord has dealt with us bountifully and we have great reason to praise his name. I earned in the shop this year about $204.00.

This is the last day of the year and the last day of the century -- how very fiew of the world teaming millions ever saw any other century but the one we have always lived in.

The great nineteenth century -- the greatest and most marvelous of all the centuries the world has ever seen. We look back over half of its space to the time when we(sic) was a boy, wondering what the future would bring to us -- those aspirations and inspirations how fiew of them have been realised -- indeed life is like a dream -- we live on our expections --

I well remember of often thinking about the closing of the century, and who would be alive to see that time, with all of its wonderous (sic) changes. I little thought it would be me; with all of those that I then held dear gone and I alone left behind -- with new associations, new kindred, and a new home circle. But a kind Heavenly Father has permitted it to be so -- Father - Mother - relatives and school mates have all gone with the century; and I am standing tonight on the threshold of the new ages, --God has kept me through another year and has given me so many blessings and temporal comforts together with so many spiritual privileges, some of which my health has been to poor to enjoy --

What the future will be I know not -- but this I do know -- that my “Redeemer liveth” and in his care I place all our interests -- In business life I have worked in the shop more than last year or the year before -- I have earned $203.00. The seasons have been the most peculiar I have ever known. A fine early spring -- a pleasant and not very hot summer and a beautiful fall -- The season has been very dry -- the most so for many years -- yet there has been fine crops and a general prosperity throughout the country.
