The Ghosts in the LaFarge Mansion -- Well.....Not Really!!!

Okay.....here’s the story about the ghosts in the LaFarge Mansion -- well, at least my grandfather and his siblings thought there were ghosts......this article appeared in the Watertown Daily Times (Watertown, N. Y.) on August 8, 1938 in honor of the 86th birthday of my mother’s aunt, Mary Hasner (Hosner or Hosmer) Eddy.

The obit prepared for Milan Eddy, Mary's husband, states that Mary Hosner Eddy was born in Plessis, N. Y. Mary's obit states that she was born near Brown's Corners, which indeed is a few miles out of the village of Plessis.

By the way, folks, this Mansion is still standing but in a state of considerable rubble. There are photos on the Internet and as soon as I have time to locate the links, I’ll present them here. Here's the write-up on Mary and her ghost story:

Theresa, Aug. 6. -- Celebrating her 86th birthday Thursday at her home at Hyde Lake, Mrs. Mary Eddy, widow of Milan Eddy, related stories of her early life, a few years of which were spent in the LaFarge mansion when it was in its glory.

Mrs. Eddy is doing all of the housework in the Eddy farm home, where her son, Arthur, resides. She said it has been 50 years since she has called a physician to see her.

"I was born near Browns Corners in the town of Alexandria, Aug. 4, 1852, daughter of Archibald and Minnie Sweet Hosmer," she said. "When I was a little girl they held school in the old stone church on the rocks at Plessis. Later my father and mother moved to a farm off the Creek road. We were living near the Gore when I was married on Jan. 1, 1869, on a stormy day. We had engaged the Methodist minister at Plessis to come out to our home, but he decided he couldn't get a horse through, so started out afoot. That storm spoiled our wedding trip. The minister couldn't get away, nor could some of the guests and we all stayed all night. Nathan Eddy, a brother of Milan, and Elizabeth Bretsch, stood up with us."

"When we lived in the LaFarge mansion the great wall was standing along the highway and the house was in tip-top shape. I remember those rooms. There were 42 in all. There was a story that the house was haunted. Mother said it was not likely. Weird sounds would come from the basement at times and mother started down one fall day to investigate. There were a lot of large bottles with the corks out. They were standing so that the wind swept across the mouths of those bottles and produced the sounds."

"My husband was a farmer. My father was a teamster. He drew freight from Watertown to Plessis. That was before the time of the railroads here. After farming in Leray, my husband hired to the late John Parker, 'Esquire John' as he was known. There was another John Parker whom we called 'Little John.' He became a doctor in Chicago. My husband worked for John Parker nine years and then rented the farm, remaining there ten years longer. He worked some for John C. Reed, when the big saw mill was running near Stroughs. My husband died on March 4, 1927.

"I have three children, George of Depauville, Cora (Mrs. Fred Snell) of Watertown and Arthur. I have one brother living, the youngest in the family, Edward Hosmer of California. I rather think he will return east to spend his last days."

Note by Shirley: Well, brother Edward didn’t return to his native Jefferson County! I just found out he died 3/15/1947 in Inyo County, CA. I’ve had quite a challenge with finding the descendants of brother Edward. Because of the Internet, it was possible, though. Also, we have visited his granddaughter, Pauline Whiting, in Grass Valley, CA and had the pleasure of his great-granddaughter visiting us here in Ohio last year. Maybe one day I’ll post the photo of two distant cousins on our front porch during the hottest day we had last summer -- all pooped out, but looking amazingly alike.
