Mayst thou live in joy forever,
Nought from thee true pleasure sever;
From thy heart arise no sigh

Smooth the path thou shalt pursue;
And Heavens richest blessings shine
Ever on both thee and thine.

To my dear teacher,
Some friends may wish you free from care,
Others, joy and wealth,
Some may wish you blessings rare,
Long days and constant health,
But my wish for you is better still
Than other friends have given,
That when you from this earth depart
Your soul may rest in Heaven.

To my Dear Cousin and Teacher:
Patience will wipe away the streaming tear,
And hope will paint the pallid cheek of fear,
Content will always happiness supply,
And virtue call a blessing from on high.
Your sincere friend and scholar.

Clarion B. Winslow, author of the letter to Fred and Nellie about a trip from NYC to north country.)

To my Cousin and Teacher:
We may write our names in albums.
We may trace them on the sand.
Or may chisel them in marble.
With a fine and skillful hand.
But the pages soon are sullied.
Soon each name will fade away.
Like all monuments will decay.
But my friend there is an album
Full of leaves of snowy white.
Where no name is ever tarnished.
But forever pure and bright
In the Book of Life Gods album.
May your name be penned with care.
And may those who here have written
Write their names hereafter there.
Your friend and scholar.

(Mattie may be sister to Emma. One sister married Charles P. Marshall -- which one???)

*Gladwin spelling used by Minnie here was not the spelling her father preferred; he preferred "Gladwyn." There was a Minnie Gladwin from New Hartford (NY) who visited the area. (by granddaughter, Shirley Farone)

**Mate Conklin was Minnie Gladwyn's cousin. Documents and family items show the spelling as Mattie. (by Conklin researcher)

Date: April 26, 2003 -- I received the most delightful e-mail message with attachment from Carolyn Bulgey today:

Carolyn Bulgey's note: "I don't know whether you can use this or not, but it is a works database consisting of the entries in an autograph book given to William Henry Everett (known as Henry in census and other documents) by his students at Dexter High School. I have the original and can scan a page for someone if they would like a copy of the original handwriting."

Carolyn Ober Bulgey
cbulgey@nycap.rr.com - Contact web host for snail address.

Through Carolyn's kindness, it has been a pleasure to present Henry Everett's autograph book on my website. Those of you having ancestors who lived around Dexter and attended school at Dexter between 1877 and 1882 will find this offering an interesting one. It was a thrill for me to find my Grandmother Conklin's name (Minnie Gladwin) and message, along with the names of several others to whom my Grandmother made reference in my chats with her and about whom she wrote in her many diaries. Note that Carolyn is willing to scan the message from the original book so you can see the original handwriting. Thank you, Carolyn.
