The following clipping was unearthed by Neal Thompson Gardner of Canton, Ohio. Neal found it in the Thursday, July 20, 1815 issue of the Ohio Repository, one of the first newspapers in Ohio and one which became the present “Canton Repository.” Mr. Gardner wrote: The Ohio Repository is the 2nd oldest publication in NE Ohio, beginning publication in March 1815, continuously published to this day. Cleveland did not publish until 1818, and was not continuous until the mid-1820s. A small "gazette-type" was published in Warren around 1810, but was not consistently published until the 1830s.

Mr. Gardner has given me permission to use the clipping’s contents on my website - 1/13/2002. Thank you, Neal.

“A very remarkable cavern has lately been discovered near Sackett's Harbour, on the shore of Lake Ontario. Six persons descended into it, to a depth of about 30 feet and proceeded more than half a mile thro' various apartments, wonderfully wrought by nature, some of which were ten feet high, and others barely sufficient to pass with difficulty. - Green. Gaz.”
