Redwood Man
Recalls Killing
Of Golden Eagle
An adventure of years ago was recalled for a Redwood man by an article on the golden eagle, appearing in The Times on Tuesday.
A photograph accompanying the story showed a stuffed specimen in the bird room at the Jefferson County Historical society, which was shot by George Hunneyman 78 years ago.
Charles Hunneyman, 67, of Redwood, his son, recalls the day the bird was killed. "I was a small boy at the time. When the bird was first seen, it was perched on the barn. My father wounded it, but it flew away. He and Merton Beebee rode on horseback to Bicklehaupt flats, where he (Mr.George Hunneyman) killed it. They took it to the Augsbury farm where they gave it to Mr. Augsburyto be mounted."
Note: Can anyone tell me if the eagle is still at the Historical Society? I’m betting it isn’t! Hopefully, I will one day get to Watertown and find the article which caused Charles to do some reminiscing.
