Column 1

After reading Joseph Fayel's articles on the Patriot war, Hon. George A. Bagley said he remembered one incident connected with it very distinctly. Mr. Bagley was a small boy at the time but fond of hunting and carried a shotgun when he would have to rest it on a companion's shoulder to take aim. He was about his father's barn, playing in the hay loft, and discovered about a hundred kegs of powder covered with hay. One he opened and found it to be first-rate shotgun powder. This he rolled aside and covered with hay in the corner. One morning, he discovered all of the powder was gone but his keg and he revelled in free powder for two years because of the Patriot War.
